you want a good laugh? - mess I made
Hillbilly Housewife wrote: So I make my own yogurt... and sometims i forget about it... not big deal, it turns into this cottage cheese type of concoction.
So... I was straining the curds from the whey... and because i was using a stupid tea bag strainer (my cheesecloth was left behind or given away or something, I can't find it...and haven't needed it since we moved. Time for a new one!) I was lacking the dexterity I needed...and I dropped the unstrained container on the counter..it spilled over and made a huge huge mess ont he floor, not unlike vomit.
That's about half a litre of GROSSNESS!
I cleaned up the most I could... and the darn dog licked up the rest.

Oh well..at least i had already strained the majority of it... hurray! I think i'm going to use it in lasagna tonight. Mmmmm!
sparkys2boys replied: Gosh your good..lol.. I just buy mine!!!
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I would, too, but it would cost me 3$ a day for yogurt, the kids and me eat it so much!! This way, costs me about 20 $ a month.
sparkys2boys replied: We eat a ton of it to but still I but it..lol!! And the past two days I have been CRAVING a smoothie with orange juice, banana, ice cubes and frozen plain yougurt. Sooooo yummy.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Oh THANKS. Now I want one.
lisar replied: I am the only one in my house that likes it. So I will buy it. Good for your though Rocky I wouldnt even know where to begin to make it.
sparkys2boys replied: Your welcome..lol They are super yummy in the morning! Or afternoon.. evening.. well you get the point Am I helping the craving go away??
Hillbilly Housewife replied: no.....
But I do have frozen strawberries.
Now I just have to wait til tomorrow til the new batch of yogurt is ready....or go buy some. lol
sparkys2boys replied: ok.. think unpure smoothie thoughts, that may help
A&A'smommy replied: lol Rocky that does sound gross!!!
punkeemunkee'smom replied: While that mess sounds really gross I am now incredibly interested in how you make yogurt. Can you share the recipe/process?
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Yeah sure...
Take a few tablespoons full of plain yogurt... add warm milk... (powdered works FINE)... add a spoonful of sugar or honey..put container in another container of warm water... keep warm for anywhere between 12 - 20 hours (check the consistency by stirring with a spoon... you can spoon out the whey that collects at the top, the yellowish liquid... or you can use it in bread, or soup etc...)
By warm, I mean not warm enough to scald you, but a little tingle from the heat.
Just let it sit.
If you let it sit too long, it will chunk... if that happens, just let it be a ltitle longer... it will give you a soft curd cheese. Kinda of like ricotta or cottage cheese. You strain it... or you keep it liquidy, whatever... there's a LOT of whey when this happens... you can keep it, or throw it out. I usually just pour it down the drain, becasue I don't like it. Some people do.
I do it by memory... i'll see if i can't find a really close recipe on the net.
Oh - you can also do this with water in a crockpot..turning it on for 15, off for 45, on for 15, off for 45 type of deal... good if you're home all day and alert. I can't be bothered.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: These pages seem about right. I just use my own yogurt as a starteer... I buy one of those 50 cent containers maybe twice a month, i use powdered milk, I don't use milk as well, just the powder and water. it works fine for about 5 times... just use the bottom of your container if you don't double dip your spoon.
it might take a few tries to get it right the first time... good luck!

This last link is just a fancy way of telling you what you can do with yoru yogurt if it gets chunky.
Yes, my yogurt looks like the first pic of the 3 last pics..... when i say there's liquid at the top, that's the same one in the pic - it's the whey. You can stir it back in, or strain it.
The middle picture looks 100% like what i was straining earlier, and dropped. Kinda like vomit. But, it does turn out like the 3rd pic. ;)Yummy. Good luck with this... my kids like doing it too.
austins mom replied: thats neat.. i wouldnt even know where to start to make it.
redchief replied: Yogurt making is a talent I don't think I'd ever be able to master. Kudos, Rocky. I like yogurt a lot, and heck, cottage cheese is OK too if the recipe gets messed.
