worried about my friend's baby
jolene555 wrote: a very good friend of mine has a 2 week old who has been a bit fussy. despite her pediatritian's direct orders, she has started giving him fruit juice!!! she says that it's all that calms him down. i couldn't believe it, and i told her that it couldn't be good for him, but she won't stop. i'm all about a mother doing what she thinks is best, but i'm not sure what harm she might be doing.
redchief replied: I agree... 2 weeks seems a bit young for fruit juice to me. But I'm old school and don't know what current acceptable practice is.
DansMom replied: It's definitely bad for the baby's digestive tract. This could lead to leaky gut syndrome and bad food allergies, acid reflux---it's just too harsh, and way too soon for anything but breast milk or formula. There is nothing in fruit juice that the baby requires for growth and brain development, nothing. There's a lot of sugar and no fat. Every time the baby has juice, he's not having the nutritive things he would be getting with formula. I hope she's diluting it at least! Even so it's ill-advised to give juice or water when they contain no nutrients that are so important at this age. Is she listening to some relative rather than her pediatrician? You are right to worry.
jolene555 replied: i'm not sure who's advise she is going on. she did say that the book she's reading "dosen't say not to." dosen't say not to!!! i doubt it mentions not to drop them on their head, but you still don't do it. arg. she's getting so mad at me . . .
FroggyJK replied: OMG!!!!!! At 2 WEEK????? That is defintely not good!!!!
Is the father around or maybe a grandparent that could change her mind? I don't have any advise.
MomToMany replied: Wow, I can't belive that! My babies didn't get juice til a year old!
Kirstenmumof3 replied: OMG Claudia didn't start getting juice until she was 6-8mths old. Can't remember exactly when. That can't be good for him, that's way to young!
darrylswifeskylersmom replied: omy!.... I dont think that could be good for a 2 week old!!
Emeraldsmom replied: OMG!! My baby is only 2 months old, so I am not an expert, but I think that is way to young to give fruit juice. I hope that baby is okay.
gr33n3y3z replied: that is way to young to give fruit juice to a baby
Jordon and Lisa replied: Not cool. I agree with the idea of speaking to the father maybe. That could cause serious problems.
coasterqueen replied: I totally agree with Tracy. This is so sad
jcc64 replied: Often babies are fussy b/c of immature digestive systems. This is only exacerbating the problem and is dead wrong. Poor baby.
ctymom replied: eek....definately too young for juice! Giving food/juice too soon for babies can mess up their sugar regulating and research has shown that they could develope diabetes later in life. Not to mention that it also takes away from their nutritional needs. The baby is probably fussy for some other reason.
Hopefully she will change her mind.

A&A'smommy replied: she SOO needs to listen to you, that is horrible! Maybe you should try talking to the father!!!
MommyToAshley replied: I agree, way tooo young.
Maybe you could give her a different book where it says not to give juice until at least 6 months of age. Or refer her to some online resources. If you need help finding some material, please let me know.
mummy2girls replied: OMG! That is so sad. She reminds me of a ex friend of mine. She gave her son koolaid in a bottle at 6 months for nap times. This kid would wake up with red teeth and a red stain around the lips. at age 16 months his teeth was rotting down to the roots. so he had to get his 2 upper baby teeth pulled out at 18 months of age...
loveydad replied: Grr i hate when people do stupid stuff like that!
kimberley replied: poor baby! can you maybe do some research and show her how harmful it is to give baby juice so young? that is so awful!
ctymom replied: OMG.... that is just plain awful! I'm speechless!
Pamela
jolene555 replied: so far i have had very little luck with her. i think i have convinced her that the juice is too much, especially as little as she was diluting it. she is, however, giving him pedialite (sp?) instead. i still think that there is something greater upseting this baby and she's looking for a quick fix, but if she's got to give him something i'd rather it be "doctor recommended", ya know? i have not yet done the research on pedialite on babes this young, but if i don't lay off of her for a bit she's going to stop talking to me.
Nicole replied: 2 WEEKS IS WAY TO EARLY I hope she comes to see this before she hurt`s her baby
mummy2girls replied: And u would think she learned because with her next child she did the exact same thing and again at 2 years of age his teeth had to be pulled out!
mummy2girls replied: Well i know its safe at a certain age but only when they are sick! And even then they dont allow you to keep a child on pedialyte for more than a few hours expecially at a yoiung age. Im pretty sure at 2 weeks pedialyte to wrong expecially if its all the time every day!!!!!!!
ctymom replied:
Poor kids

MomToMany replied: I can't believe she is so stupid! I'm sorry if I sound so harsh, but anyone can read a magazine or parenting book and know not to give that stuff to a newborn. I would demand that she bring him to the Dr. to see if there's anything else wrong with that poor baby. Who knows what damage she's done? I would worry about this baby dying from not getting the nutrients he needs.
Can I ask how old this mother is? It's not hard to read the can of formula and see that it (or BFing) should be the MAIN SOURCE OF NUTRITION for the first year. Did she not read ANY pregnancy books or magazines while pregnant??
I just can't believe someone is so uneducated on caring for a baby.
Mommybear replied: OMG juice at two weeks is waaayyyyyyyy to young. Babies at that age could be fussy cause of stomach digestion issues and obviously juice wont help or Colic. Either way that is a no go. My son for the first 5 months breastfed and I found out after the 3rd month of getting puked on after every meal that my son was born with gastroreflux. She needs to be careful.
