why why why do parents do that?

cameragirl21 wrote: So another photograher was talking about two girls she'd photographed recently, sisters or cousins, can't remember which.
Their names are Blayer and Aiveree.
huh.gif blink.gif
I get that they're trying to be creative and all but come freaking on, it's not creative, it's spelled wrong!
I can't even imagine going thru life named Blayer or Aiveree and having to spell it out for people because they assume in all good reason that it would be spelled Blair or Avery.
I'm all for creative and unusual names and can see changing the spelling a little bit here and there but to go from Blair to Blayer seems a bit much to me, jmo of course....

PrairieMom replied: Working on a Peds ward in the hospital is always a treat. there is always at least one child that I have absolutely no idea how to pronounce their name. I usually have to take a general consensus among my coworkers as to what we assume the name is intended to be. rolleyes.gif 1/2 the time we are wrong. rolleyes.gif
The thing that gets me are when the parents get snippy and are rude about correcting me when I am wrong. Common people, if you spell your child's name with extra constnents, and leave out all vowels, please please don't get rude with ME because I have no clue what it is supposed to be. rolleyes.gif

lisar replied: Raygen is actually Reagan.

My friends kid is Justyn as in Justin.
her daughters name is
Ka`tlyn as in Kaitlyn
and then they have
Cayden

thats all the weired ones I know

cameragirl21 replied:
well, the name Raygen really has many different acceptable spellings. It's kind of like the name Katherine, where Catherine and Kathryn and probably other spellings I left out are considered normal spellings. Or the name Laurie, which can also be Lori.
The spelling Reagan is just due to our former president. I've seen it spelled Regan, like in the movie "The Exoricist" and Reygan too.
It's not like Avery or Blair, each of which really only has one common spelling.

BAC'sMom replied: Sounds like a case of different strokes for different folks. biggrin.gif

I personally love vowels it helps compensate for my last name. laugh.gif

DVFlyer replied: I've often wondered why parents name their children "creative" names.

I know I named my son Keian because I think it's cool and hope other people will think so too which will lead to him being rich, successful and happy. smile.gif

cameragirl21 replied:
Idk, for girls I really like the names Kalahari, Acacia and Azalea, even though none of those are really names. I also love the idea of naming a girl Elijah, if she can pull it off. Not every girl could pull off a name like that.
I figure Kalahari can always go by Kali if she doesn't like it, Azalea can go by Lea and Acacia, well, I'm afraid she'd be stuck with that one.
But when I mention those names to people, they just think I'm wacko.gif .

Crystalina replied:
Say Wha? I can't even pronounce the first two. emlaugh.gif

cameragirl21 replied:
Kalahari--Ka, as in kaka, la, as in la la la singing, ha as in ha, I'm right and you're wrong, ri as in rear but without the ear. It's the name of a desert in Africa where there are lots of wild animals. biggrin.gif
Acacia--Ah-kay-sha. It's a type of tree. biggrin.gif
Ok, so you know I'm a liberal nutcase, why not name my kids after elements of nature...? laugh.gif cool.gif

Danalana replied: Jennifer, this is something that has been a fly in my bonnet for a long time. it's like you can't spell ANYTHING anymore. Like you said, there are names that have alternate spellings, and most of us are aware of them. But it's like some people want to be so creative that they completely mess the name up. The pronunciation no longer even says the name, KWIM? I have some examples, but I won't get into them in case any of you have these names, but geez. I think I'm gonna name my girl Aerosol and be done with it biggrin.gif Hey! Don't any of you steal that if you have a girl before I do!

lisar replied:
ditto

PrairieMom replied:
yeah, those would be names I would have to debate on with my coworkers. laugh.gif

Danalana replied: And apostrophes! How do you even begin to pronounce names with apostrophes just stuck in random places?

grandma replied: My stepson's SO's girls are Sierra and Ascha. I called her Asia for the longest time...lol
That one name looks like Calamari......

Danalana replied: Ooooooh, I love the name Asia (though I know that's now what her name really was, HA)! I have mentioned that one to Richard, actually.

Calimama replied: Yeah IMO the "lets replace I with Y" stage is ridiculous.

luvbug00 replied: For Mya we get (mee-ah) alot or "you forgot the other a" (since the orginal spelling is maya) but whatever i like it and she does too, saves us room on all her forms smile.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: I'd love to hear the reasoning behind it. I'm all for creative names as long as they are gramatically correct thumb.gif

This year, out of the thousand kids I see a week, the winners are . . . . .
Alya (pronounced ah LEE ah)
Khristiann (pronounced Christian) and it's a boy to boot.

grandma replied:
lol, the girl will be called Al-ya
The boy - Christy-Ann....
Nice job parents!

Calimama replied:
Poor boy. I would have said Kristi Ann.

I don't understand what's so cool about giving your kid a "different" spelling of their name if the way it's pronounced is the same. huh.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied:
blush.gif

I did not like the look of Kaitlyn so I went with Kaitlin

but some are very weird

cameragirl21 replied:
I have seen it spelled as Kaitlin quite a bit, I never thought it was the wrong spelling, in fact, I thought the y spelling was creative....
I've also seen it spelled as Caitlin.

Danalana replied:
laugh.gif Yeah, for that one letter rolling_smile.gif

Calimama replied:
I mean when it's VERY obvious there should be an I.. and it's exaggerated. KWIM? There's a girl in Miabella's tumbling class whose name is Xchylyr (Skyler)

I've always seen names like Kaitlyn, Dillian/Dylan.. etc spelled either way.

grandma replied: My great niece is Kaitlyn.....

Danalana replied:
Good gosh blink.gif

cameragirl21 replied:
blink.gif
wtf is that supposed to be?!
those parents should have their heads examined, seriously, that's just unintelligible.

stella6979 replied:
You took the words right out of my mouth. blink.gif

Calimama replied:
Skyler... allegedly. rolling_smile.gif

Danalana replied: Let's see...what can we do with Tori...
how about Tohrrye?

cameragirl21 replied:
next time you see them tell them that when they're ready to name their next one, to be sure to step away from the bong first.

Calimama replied:
LOL. The dad is really big into Star Trek so I imagine the next one will be even more inventive. I can't wait. tongue.gif

Danalana replied:
Or you could suggest Tohrrye!

grandma replied:
Tell me how that is Skyler?

Calimama replied:
Ask her parents. I didn't name the kid. dunno.gif

Danalana replied: I guess they think the "X" makes an "s" sound.

Calimama replied: Apprantly that little girl isn't alone. (Notice the last E instead of Y) The boys name Xchyler is ranked 66,115 of 68,285!!! I really thought it would be in the last 10. blink.gif

http://www.topbabynames.com/name_page/Xchyler Wow.

luvmykids replied: Nikka's name is always pronounced wrong, like "Nick-uh" instead of "Kneekah. It is an unusual name, based on the last half of her moms name (Monica, same as me laugh.gif but pronounced in Spanish it's "Moeneeca", hence "Nikka").

Crystalina replied: I think I will change Gabriella's name.
Hmm, I'm thinking we will go the Prince route and just use a symbol.

I will be:

Crystal
Mommy To Izabella, Evan and user posted image

rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

Danalana replied: Good choice, Crystal!

My3LilMonkeys replied: I have no problem with weird names, or even weird spellings to some extent - I'm not crazy about apostrophes in names and I really think there should be a limit on how many consecutive consonants you can use without throwing a vowel in.

But IMO if you're going to name your child something unusual, be prepared for years of correcting people on the spelling and pronunciation and don't get annoyed about it - you brought it on yourself.

PrairieMom replied:
exactly.

cameragirl21 replied:
yeah but that's just it, you're NOT bringing onto yourself, you're bringing it onto your kid who did not get to choose his/her name. That poor girl Blayer is going to be called something like Blayer the player in school. It's just asking for trouble, imo.

mckayleesmom replied: Mckaylee has a kid in her class named

HTOO........how do you pronounce that? I still haven't figured it out. Is it just TOO and the H is silent?

cameragirl21 replied:
is he from viet nam or another asian nation?

My3LilMonkeys replied:
Yes, but kids will find a way to make fun of any name - no matter how normal or unusual.

msoulz replied: Well, growing up Mary in a Catholic school, I would have loved a different name. Mom wanted to name me Jennifer or Heather, but Dad won. Perhaps if they would have named me Mairee?? tongue.gif

PrairieMom replied: the one that gets me is Nevaeh. I can't STAND that name. It just rubs me wrong for some reason. I seriously have an emotional reaction when I hear that name.

kit_kats_mom replied:
so if it's not Asia...is it phonetic? Az-cha ?

grandma replied:
H-2-O...that poor liitle boy should have picked an American name like my nail techs do.....

cameragirl21 replied:
I see that a lot in newborns, Heaven spelled backwards. The parents think they're so original and I have to bite my tongue to keep from telling them that it's becoming so common, lol, it's like the new Jennifer.
I do think it sounds awful, though, I always cringe when I hear it. Sounds like someone who drank too much and lost some of his/her teeth is saying never.... huh.gif wacko.gif

cameragirl21 replied:
I'm guessing like Asha, like you're say ah shucks, with out the cks...? Ah shuh...?

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Why couldn't Acacia have the nickname Casey?

cameragirl21 replied:
I guess she could. I'm not gonna go for any of those names, though, they're just a faraway dream. Maybe Azalea, that one I'm a bit tied to because I saw a movie with a girl named Azalea, she was the villain and totally not likeable but for some reason, I fell in love with the name right then and there.
For girls, the names I love that I may actually use are Ariella or Ariel, Gabrielle and Sydney.
For boys, Joshua, Jacob and Daniel.
Pretty straightforward and fairly common.

Brias3 replied:
That's exactly how DD's name is pronounced, but I tried to be as phonetically correct as possible in the spelling, since we were choosing an already "out there" name (DH picked it! blush.gif )

I've seen some real doozies at the kids school this year, specifically in Mason's class and the other PK2 class. He has a Kampbel (pronounced Campbell, like the soup without a "s" at the end), Espn (pronounced es-pen, but apparently the kid is a TV station?), an Alexuz and a Daysie. blink.gif

Celestrina replied: My cousin (who lives in California, go figure) named her son Windspirit.

Calimama replied:
Hey hey, there is nothing wrong with CA!

Let's not get vicious now. laugh.gif justjoking.gif

cameragirl21 replied:
I think there is something seriously wrong with a name that has no vowel in it. blink.gif
Btw, the name Aliyah is Hebrew, it means ascent. When Jews speak of moving to Israel, we call it "making Aliyah" as it's considered ascent when you move to Israel and descent when you move out. Wasn't sure if you knew that little bit of info about your dd's name. I love the name Aliyah btw, doesn't sound strange to me at all. happy.gif

Danalana replied: Now see, Alexuz just makes me mad! dry.gif Maybe the parents can't spell...

luvmykids replied:
Thats how I've always said her name in my mind....you did good laugh.gif

Cece00 replied: I can not STAND "UNEEK" spellings of names. Some of them are so over the top its absurd.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: To each their own I guess. Doesn't really bother me. Plenty of people have botched up my own name. Telling me that it should be spelled Ray. I spell Wil with one L because I thought it looked cool. People get it wrong ALL the time, but whatever. Plus my uncle's name is Gil with one L, so we went with it. All that really matters IMO is that it means something to the parents.

Brias3 replied:
Cool! I knew the meaning, but didn't know it was referred to as that.

Brias3 replied:
Thanks! biggrin.gif

I wasn't going to get too crazy and throw any extra "a"'s or "l"'s in there. I've seen Aalliyah before wacko.gif

MomToJade&Jordan replied: A friend of mine was spelling out Jordan's name at dinner tonight and she was like what no y? No I wanted it spelled the normal way. I even got a question mark when I named Jade. People were asking me if I was going to spell it Jayde. I was like um no. There are some funky spellings out there though and I have always wondered why...

HuskerMom replied:
I cringe too. I don't really have anything against the name Nevaeh, but I wouldn't name my kid that. I didn't really think about it before but it really has become more common.

My MIL was telling me about this lady she used to work with. She just had a little boy and named him Ty, which I think is adorable. Her oldest daughter is named Diddle, like hey diddle diddle. I feel so sorry for that little girl when she goes to school. She's going to get teased like crazy!

I don't know how many times in school someone pronounced my name as Johnny. I wanted to yell at them I'm a Girl!! mad.gif rolleyes.gif

Sam & Abby's Mom replied:
Yep -- I cant stand them either. It makes it look like they are trying TOO HARD to be different.

cameragirl21 replied: oh, I agree to each their own, Rae, I'm just wondering why some parents go all about to be "kre8tiv" when all it really is is just spelled wrong and complicates things. I mean, when I saw the name Blayer written out, I wanted to call her Blay-yer and I'm sure that's a common reaction, so why put her through that?
I also think there is a big difference in going from Will to Wil and Blair to Blayer or Avery to Aiveree. I know someone named Wilson who goes by Wil and at least when I see it written out, it's easy to figure out what it's intended to be.
As an artist, I think creativity is paramount but I don't think spellling a name wrong is creative, it's just spelled wrong and puts undue hardship on a child who will have to spend his/her whole life telling people how to spell and pronounce his/her name properly.

grandma replied:
I think you would say it ... A-sha... almost like a sneeze sounds..lol
Honestly I have to really think about it before I can actually say it.
