the occupation survey - just for fun!

cameragirl21 wrote: ok, how about a survey on what we do and how we do it?
here are the questions:
1. what do you do for a living? if you are a sahm, please list what you did before you became a mom. wub.gif
2. do you like what you do?
3. what do you wish you could do, if you could do anything? not working and being filthy rich is not an option, please list what kind of work you would like to do.
4. what do you like most about what you do?
5. what is the one thing you wish you could change about what you do?
6. what is your number one, not child related hobby?
7. what did you go to college/grad school/technical school to do?
ok, here are my answers:
1. i'm a professional photographer
2. yes, i absolutely love it.
3. i wouldn't want to do anything else but i sometimes wish i could be free just to shoot what i want instead of being commissioned to shoot for others all the time.
4. what i like the most is creating amazing pictures, it's hard to believe what you can find in a picture that you never noticed IRL.
5. the one thing i wish i could change is that so much is out of my control--like the weather, it could start raining or sometimes the sun is so bright that i have to change locations to avoid harsh shadows. if i shoot in studio i am much more in control but then you have to find something to occupy the children because there is not much there but outside they always have something interesting to look at. so either way, i have limited control some of the time.
6. my number one hobby besides photography is gardening, specifically butterfly gardening and raising.
7. i have a degree in psychology and chemistry, planned to go to medical school, hence my interest in medicine related topics but i'm not a delayed gratification kind of girl, i'm way too impatient and med school is all about delayed gratification. that's the beauty of what i do--you snap the picture and you can see your artwork very quickly, as opposed to waiting a long time to see the fruit of your labors.

lesliesmom replied: 1. what do you do for a living? I'm an "administrative Assistant" a/k/a glorified secretary for a lawfirm of 2 attorneys.

2. do you like what you do? No. Trying to change "careers" won't know anything for another 3 months... might be getting into some sort of management of associations (condos, communities, etc).

3. what do you wish you could do, if you could do anything? I would love to be a physical therapist. Started down that path out of college but dropped the curriculum because I was failing sciences.

4. what do you like most about what you do? Nothing, really. Other than the fact that most the time there is nothing going on (we are highly specialized in our practice area and business is really slow) so I get to surf the web and play on the computer most the day.

5. what is the one thing you wish you could change about what you do? The major thing would be the location. I work about 30-45 minutes from home (in detroit). I would like to be closer and out of the city so I don't have to pay their taxes even though I don't live in Detroit.

6. what is your number one, not child related hobby? Dance/community theatre.

7. what did you go to college/grad school/technical school to do? I did go to college. Dropped out with 9 classes left for an English degree. I went back to a technical school and became a Medical Assistant that promptly went no where because the starting pay was WAY lower than I was told to expect.

amymom replied: 1. what do you do for a living? if you are a sahm, please list what you did before you became a mom. I am the assistant to a Manufacturor's Rep. He is involved in a few businesses and I help him by managing them.
I also am (just this week took on this job) the Director of Religious Education at my church. And I am a Mom.
2. do you like what you do? I mostly like it. I love my new part-time job. I like my job and wish that I could work a few less hours at it.

3. what do you wish you could do, if you could do anything? not working and being filthy rich is not an option, please list what kind of work you would like to do.

I enjoy the business end of things. I wish I could work just the hours my kids are in school. So for me, being the school secretary would be agood fit for me. Or I wish I could get paid for all my volunteer activity, which is related to teens / kids. The library, boy scouts, church, etc. A teen youth group would be an ideal job for me. Or helping at school. I wish I had completed college and could teach. sad.gif

4. what do you like most about what you do? business, payroll, figuring things out.
5. what is the one thing you wish you could change about what you do? the hours of the main job. And the fact that I have to report to somebody. Also, one of his businesses is a Retail shop. So that involves working with the public and maintaining set hours. I do not like this part.

6. what is your number one, not child related hobby? Sadly, I do not have one. Unless you count Soduko, but I sometimes do that with MB.
7. what did you go to college/grad school/technical school to do? College: I started out as a math-Secondary Ed major, but quickly switched to Accounting, because it was easy A's. Then I quit school. sad.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: 1. what do you do for a living? if you are a sahm, please list what you did before you became a mom.
my first job and the one I take most seriously is mom. When I have the girls by myself, which is 3 week days, I don't even try to work unless it's an emergency. My paid job is database administrator for a governmental consulting firm. Basically, I determine the percentage of medicaid eligible children in 3 states schools. The figure I come up with, helps the school districts obtain funding from their state. I do this all from home and I started when I had Katherine, 4 years ago. Before that, I was the collections manager for a small credit union.
2. do you like what you do? Yes, I love both of my jobs for the most part.
3. what do you wish you could do, if you could do anything? not working and being filthy rich is not an option, please list what kind of work you would like to do. I really think I've found my niche. :-) I get to be a mom most of the time while still bringing in money and using my brain on more professional activities
4. what do you like most about what you do? The fact that I can work from anywhere is a BIG bonus. I'm so happy to be able to spend these formative years with the girls. I was able to nurse both of them for almost two years and raise them the way I thought best. I also had the opportunity to introduce them to social situations/daycare when I thought it would be beneficial to them. I also like the flexability and the fact that I have little contact with my bosses and co workers. I am still in the loop because my aunt works for the company and she keeps me informed, but I have no office politics and I love that. I also love the fact that they trust me so much.
5. what is the one thing you wish you could change about what you do? I sometimes wish it wasn't so tedious. Just certian parts but geez, three times a year I am a zombie from doing the same things over and over again.
6. what is your number one, not child related hobby? eating. blush.gif
7. what did you go to college/grad school/technical school to do? My degree is in Library and Information Studies. Basically it's MIS without the programming. If I got my Masters in the program, I could be a librarian...which I still may do sometime down the road.

3. what do you wish you could do, if you could do anything?
Probably either raise horses, or have a "quaint" little ceramic shop that provides space for artists that don't have their own kiln, wheel, space, etc. Provide lessons and be able to work w/kids. I'd also probably have a front section of the shop that sold cookies and coffee and stuff. Oh! And the people could sell their "wares" too! You can tell I've thought a lot about this! biggrin.gif

4. what do you like most about what you do?

Kentuckychick replied: 1) Right now my "full-time" occupation is college student, however I am a nanny several days per week and over the summers I nannied/nanny 6 days/week 12 hour days.

2) The nanny job - I do and I don't... I never really wanted to be a nanny. I LOVE to babysit for a few hours at a time and I adore children. I love the kids that I care for, BUT I was sort of roped into the job over the summer and it was just assumed I'd continue doing it on my free days during the school year (and I am one of those people who can't say no).

3) Well... I would LOVE to be a photographer, but I would also love to finish up my degree next year and follow through with my dream of becoming a Child Life Specialist.

4) I love kids... so no matter how tired I am and how much I want the day to be over when they say they love you or they give you a hug or they do something unbelievably adorable... it really does make every minute worth it.

5) The long hours (oh... and the tantrums the 6-year-old throws... and being biten by the baby)

6) Collecting Quotes

7) I'm a senior in college right now (for oh, um... the 3rd year) and I'm studying Child Development with the goal of becoming a Child Life Specialist working with children in the hospital.
