speaking of potty training... - question about training boys
~Roo'sMama~ wrote: We got Andrew some big boy underwear today and I'm going to start potty training him tomorrow. So, am I supposed to teach him to pee standing up, or can that come later? I have NO clue what I'm doing. The only plan I have is to set the timer and bring him into the bathroom every 15 minutes or so, and try not to lose my patience with all the messes since I'm not going to be using pull-ups. We've had him sit on the potty before, and he asks to do it sometimes, but we've never actually tried to potty train yet. But he has peed on the toilet once or twice, sitting down ~ so I'm wondering if telling him to stand up will confuse him now or what. What did those of you with boys do?
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: we started with sitting down. Once he got what it took to control his bladder daddy showed him how to go standing and he has never turned back. He needed the time sitting to learn how, it was just the standing that solidified the PT thing for him.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Ok good - that's kind of what I was thinking but I wasn't sure. Having Dh teach him to go standing up sounds way better than me trying to! If only he could take a few days off work to do the potty training!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I wondered about this too when I started training Ethan. He started off sitting and then he just sort of decided on his own when he wanted to start standing.
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: MIL threw cheerios in the toilet and told her boys to 'sink them'
Dh showed Matt when we were at the mall and there was a family restroom so dh got to go in the regular and Matt got the little one that he could stand at and pee into Matt came running out yelling I went potty standing up!!!!
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: Oh yea...I did ALL the work in PT'ing dh just gets all the credit because of the one time of standing up.
luvmykids replied: Ditto, especially when they don't always go pee right that second, I could get Colt to sit there with a book in hopes of catching him going potty, that's how we lucked into our first few successes
Jamison'smama replied: Jack is still sitting---he has no desire to stand up. I really wish he could, he still has to take his pants and underwear completely off---so that means shoes come off too. I would like him to stand sometime very soon.
boyohboyohboy replied: we start with sitting down also..
Our Lil' Family replied: We're doing it standing because he wasn't fond of sitting on it at all, and it was messier (he was peeing on ME!) Be prepared to read lots!
Boo&BugsMom replied: Sitting down first with Tanner as well. Troy just showed him how to hold it down. Remember, when they have to go #2, they have to sit down and point it down anyways.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Thanks guys for the advice! I tried it this morning with Andrew but it didn't go very well. First he wanted to wear all three pairs of his new underwear at once. Then he wouldn't sit on the potty when I took his diaper off. So I set the timer and told him he could sit on the potty when it beeped, but when it beeped he was eating a piece of toast and didn't want to stop to go potty. Then he had to wash his hands because they were covered in peanut butter and honey, and the running water made him pee and he was upset that his underwear got wet. I finally convinced him that it was ok and we could wash them, and got him to put another pair on (he didn't want to because he didn't want them to get wet too ) and then we set the timer again. Oh and he refused to sit on the potty after his accident too. So when the timer went off again, I told him it was time to go sit on the potty, and he said no. Then he said he was going to go poopy, so I said we should go in the bathroom, and he said no, can I go poopy in my big boy underwear. So then I told him that if he wasn't going to sit on the potty, then he couldn't wear his big boy underwear and we'd have to put a diaper back on him, and so now he's wearing a diaper.
So it seems to me like he's not ready yet. I hope I didn't miss my chance when he seemed interested a couple months ago, and I was afraid it was too soon. I guess I'll have to wait a while longer and try again later.
