should I be concerned about head banging??

ediep wrote: Jason will sometimes bang his head on a hard surface....its pretty wierd, wacko.gif but he will sit up against the wall and bang the back of his head against it. He has done this in his crib too. I think maybe he does this when he is tired, but I am not totally sure about that. He does it rather gently, I mean he doesn't bruise himself or give himself a bump...but it sure seems strange! blink.gif

chloe&tysmommy replied: I read in a book that this is normal... huh.gif

Here's what it says: Your son has discovered that he's got rhythm, and this is his way of expressing it. Head banging is a rhythmic movement, and rhythmic movements are fascinating to babies.

These habits can last a few weeks, months even a year or more. But most children abandon them by the time they are three years old without parental intervention.

---Your not alone, I catch Chloe doing this also..not too hard but hard enough. I tell her 'no' and then she stops!?!

Kirstenmumof3 replied: OMG, I don't know what to say! I hope he doesn't hurt himself and that he stops doing this! grouphug.gif

~CrazieMama~ replied: It seems painful, but it must not be or he would cry when he does it. I think kids are funny that they do things we would not think of doing.... rolling_smile.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: OMG! Maddie did this, too. She always did this when she was tired or throwing a fit (which she also did when she was tired). She did outgrow it and it apparently did not hurt her. rolling_smile.gif

HTH!

A&A'smommy replied: my little brother did this on EVERYTHING! Hes halfway normal now lol no really hes normal. Kids do some really weird stuff.

MommyToAshley replied: I read it was normal too. It sounds strange but I read that it is very common.

Heather replied: Yeh I think it is normal and unfortunately Alison does it too! She does it when she is throwing a fit. OR if she is mad at one of us she will head butt us wacko.gif ohmy.gif Hopefully, they will outgrow it sooner than later!!

aspenblue1 replied: Isabella does that also especially when she is mad. I asked her ped who said it was fine and normal for them to do that. I am not sure why they would want to bang their heads on things. Isabella has hit hers so hard she hurt her self.

amynicole21 replied: OMG - Sophia did this 2 nights ago! I thought it was so weird... she just sat in the corner behind my bedroom door and started banging the back of her head against the wall... no tears or fits, it was almost like she was just doing it for fun huh.gif

jem0622 replied: Gabe bangs his head, but up against soft things. Usually when sleepy or doesn't want to be whereever he is (in the stroller, high chair, etc.). He also shakes his head 'no' when he is tired.

Julie

ediep replied:
yup, this is exactly what Jay does

ediep replied:
yup, jay does this!! I am so glad that he is not the only kid doing this!

DansMom replied: Daniel does this too---either when he's frustrated in a dramatic way, or gently in the "I've got rhythm way" (while looking at us and smiling). He's a head-banger.
