sewing question???
ediep wrote: I want to make Jasons halloween costume this year. I want him to be a baseball. I figured it would be a big circle, front and back, with holes for his head, arms, and legs, then I could use yarn to sew on the stiches on the front. It seems very easy, but I have no idea what type of material to use....white felt or fleece..or something else?
I want it to be kind of stiff, you know? so it stays in a circle.
here is a pic of jason when he was a tiny baby on a rug that is in his room. This rug is sort of my inspiration. Of course he is much bigger now, so the rug is about the size I would need fo the costume
any advice?????
luvbug00 replied: Ok My mom was an ornge one year. and what she did was took some wites and made a frame and then use fleese to cover( cut like ornge slices and sew together to give shape. She looked hilarious!!
Boys r us replied: Awww..what a CUTE picture!!! To be honest, I don't even know why I clicked on this post other than the fact that you started it and I wanted to see what you were sewing! HAA!! B/c I can't even sew a button on..but you're right, it DOESN't sound that hard! Since I can't sew if it it were me, I would get two pieces of cardboard and cut it in a circle using the rug as a pattern and hot glue the felt or fleece to it. With one for the front and one for the back and then put a hole on each side and use some fishing line or something to tie to each piece over the shoulders.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Like one of them crazy people spouting nonsense signs.... with the strings attaching the sign to the front and the back
~KARA~ replied: If you have a craft store near you, you could see if they have a pattern for something "round" (ball or orange) or you could look on line for a pattern. I have never made anything round so Im not much help.
mom21kid2dogs replied: Or even butcher paper or paper grocery sacks would fit the bill for it, too! You can tape or staple the sides together and paint it white and use your yarn stitching!! Sounds so cute!!!
ediep replied: thanks everyone, but I don't want carboard signs, i want a fabric circle, I was thinking just a front and back, but maybe a 3-d circlle would be cuter, kind of like those baby pumpkin costumes.
I'll check for a pattern
NummyMommy replied: Ive done round things before and the pattern for baseballs is basically two hourglasses intertwinned.... If cost isnt an issue you can use duck cloth circles with a softer fabric where the holes will be. I can't tell from your post but were you planning on having your son sandwiched between the 2 circles (like he is the white stuff in an oreo) or his head and arms going through the circles back to front? I'd say off hand doing it 3D would be more sewing but easier for him to move around in. (if his legs are not part of the ball of course ) editted cause I can't read
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I would use felt, Edie. I think that would work just fine and the yarn would, too.
ediep replied: Thanks Aimee, I hoped you'd chime in! LOL!!
I am sooo new to sewing, so far I've only hemmed my pants and skirts. Can I use felt in my sewing machine? Do you think I should frame it out with wire so it stays in a circle? or maybe some sort of padding?
jen (3littleladies)...any thoughts?? LOL
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Felt should be fine in your sewing machine. Make sure you have it on the right settings. Ask the people at the fabric store what needle you should use for sewing felt (depending on thickness) and make sure your tension is set on the machine. Then you will be good to go.
You can also hot glue the felt together. You can use a batting for stuffing if you want or you can encase wire in it somehow. The wire would probably be easier. I think I know what you are trying to do. You want it to come out in the front as well as the sides, and make it round like a pumpkin costume, right? Yeah, the wire will work. It shouldn't be hard. Let me know if you have anymore questions. I'm sure if you find ANY pattern for a round costume (such as a pumpkin) you could figure it out. And the ladies at the fabric store are always happy to help.
I wish I was close to you, I'd just make it for you.
5littleladies replied: I agree with everything Aimee said. Felt should be perfect and you should have no problems sewing it on your machine. The only other thing I can think of is make sure your stich length is set right-I would go longer than shorter because it seems to me that would work better on felt. If you are going for a round look like Aimee is describing then there is a pattern out there for this-maybe that would help if you are nervous about it, but it sounds to me like you have the right idea.
I can't wait to see it!! I'm sure he is going to be adorable!! My girls are harping on me already to make theirs but they keep changing their minds as to what they want to be so I'm holding off until October.
ediep replied: thanks so much!!! I found a pattern on ebay, although I have no idea how to use it, I think my mom can help. I am so excited about it, hope it turns out cute!
MommyToAshley replied:
It sounds neat though, I can't wait to see the final pics!
boobies4virtue replied: you could just overly starch it after you make it. In the I love Lucy rerun when she over starches Ricky's shirts, they're really stiff....
