question about hotdogs
A&A'smommy wrote: I was just wondering when eveyone gave their kids hotdogs i have seen lots of kids eat them just fine (when cute up right) at 10 months I'm not really sure if I should give them to her at this age or not.... what other foods besides fruits, eggs and pototoes (she doesn't like eggs or pototoes no matter how I fix them ) you have given them. Connersmommy what have you given conner I know you gave him potatoes and eggs before I gave them to Alyssa (I didn't know when I should introduce them) so I was wondering what else you gave him and what he liked If anything or anyone else what have you done? We are going grocery to the grocery store tomorrow so I was just wondering
ediep replied: at about 10 months, Jason completely refused baby food, so I had to start getting creative. He ate lots of cheerios, crachers, tiny pasta with butter, cheese. I slowly started introducing things like tiny cut up pears or banana, baked items like banana bread or muffins. He tried turkey and chicken at about 10 or 11 months too.
Your question was about hot dogs......I gave a few pieces to Jason just a few weeks ago, (he is almost 2) but he wouldn't try it.
MommyToAshley replied: Ashley wouldn't eat baby food at that age either.
You could steam vegetables really soft and give them to her. Carrots are a good one to get really soft and cut up. Green beans too. I probably cut mine too small, but I was paranoid of her choking. I would watch giving peas and corn though because those can be choking hazards. I still mashed Ashley's peas until she got older.
Like Edie said, pasta is another good one. Mac 'n cheese is always a favorite. I just cut it up into small pieces. I can't remember exactly when I gave Ashley spaghetti, but it was before her first birthday and that still is one of her favorites! You could give small piece of cheese. Cheerios. I remember at this age, Ashley really liked finger foods and being able to feed herself. Have you tried the Gerber wagon wheels or veggie crackers? Ashley loved both of those.
As for hot dogs, I waited untils she was 16 or 17 months to let her try hot dogs, and then I cut it up really small. I've only given them to her once or twice -- again I am afraid of her choking and we don't really hotdogs so she's only had them when we were out.
HTH
ediep replied: oh yes, I gave Jason cut up boiled carrots and geen beans at that age too
3xsthefun replied: Maegan she eats pretty much whatever we eat. I haven't tried her with eggs yet so I don't know how she likes them. She loves spaghetti, she has had potatoes which she also really likes, mac& cheese, crackers, small pieces of cheese, cooked veggies, rice, small pieces of bread, I think that is it.
She still eats her baby food pretty good but there is some she won't eat.
Hotdogs I don't think I would give them until she is almost 2 years old. I am just to afraid of them choking. I didn't mean you should wait until she is 2 years old maybe around 15 months or alittle older. Yes you can cut them up real good into small pieces so she will be able feed her.
I think it is totally up to you though when you want to try and give her hotdogs.
DansMom replied: Daniel LOVES hot dogs. However, they are chock full of nitrates (unless you buy nitrate -free from a health food store), so we only serve them once in a while. I haven't found a nitrate-free brand that he will eat---the health food brands all tend to be low fat as well, and the rubbery texture turns him off (if anyone has a brand to suggest, let me know!) Also, I have to be careful to buy hot dogs without filler, as there is milk-protein (in whey, for example)---most people don't have to worry about that aspect of things though.
As far as choking goes, just cut it up small enough to be finger food.
Can you get avocados where you are? They are such good food for most toddlers. The outside should be dark green, the inside should be soft but not brown. A lot of babies like sweet potatos with butter, or steamed carrots, and green beans cooked very soft are fun to pick up and bite. Daniel loves refried beans and now that he's older he can eat pinto beans whole too (but mash them up for littler ones).
coasterqueen replied: Kylie unfortunately LOVES hotdogs. I can't remember when we gave them to her but we gave them before a year. She loves spaghettio's with little hotdogs in them.
I'm right there with her when she's eating them so I don't worry so much.
5littleladies replied: Brianna has been eating hotdogs for awhile now-probably since around 1. We cut them in pieces and then in half, but when we first gave them to her we cut them and then quartered them. Just keep an eye on her if you do give them to her.
Guest replied: hot dogs are yukky!
Mom2Boyz replied: Conner gets quite a bit of different things now that he almost refuses to eat baby food. He eats instant oatmeal (the kind with fruit in it), he loves that. We give him egg yolks only. His ped said to wait until a year before giving him the white part. Potatoes, yogurt, toast (dry), chicken (shredded), cheerios, applesauce, mac and cheese, stuffing, carrots and green beans cooked really soft. I havn't given him corn or whole peas yet though. He's also had refried beans, and LOVED them, although I don't recommend them unless you're ready to change a couple of REALLY nasty diapers He tried spaghetti once, but didn't seem to really care for it. I usually try to make something with every meal that he can eat. I'm really paranoid about giving him things like crackers, because I'm afraid he'll bite off a big chunk and choke on it. He's going through this faze now where he doesn't really want me to feed him, he wants to do it himself, so Everything I give him is cut or torn into tiny little bite sized pieces that he can pick up and eat on his own. We havn't tried hot dogs, and probably won't until he is at least 2.
A&A'smommy replied: awsome! Thanks everyone!! I'm going to wait on the hotdogs but I got some GREAT ideas!!! Thanks SO much!
TylerJ1029 replied: Gerber makes chicken, turkey and meat sticks. They come in a jar and are basically tiny hotdogs. My son is 9 months old and didnt really like them with the "skin" on them so I peel it off. Sounds like a pain in the butt but it only takes like 2 seconds. He's been a pickey eater. He eats blueberries, yogurt (Stoneyfield Farms Yo Baby Yougurt is made especially for baby's and toddlers), cheese slices and whole wheat crackers. Gerber also makes other great finger foods. All the "cookies" are sweetened with fruit juice so they are good for them too. Good luck because its not easy!
A&A'smommy replied: haha I agree about the only thing she will eat is crackers in fact I was eating wheat thins the other night and she about had a fit to eat them and I had no idea if it would be good or bad for her or not... ugh thanks for the advice everyone!
A&A'smommy replied: who posted this I don't really like them but children usually do
Coz replied: We feed our son what we eat for dinner. We've even given him Sushi. There isn't much he doesn't like. We feed him those mini meat stick in the jar too, and yes we peel off the skin and slice them up for him.
