question about diflucan

~Roo'sMama~ wrote: I finally gave up on treating my thrush myself and went to the doctor, and she gave me a prescription for diflucan, which was what I was expecting, but when I got the prescription filled the little instruction sheet that came with it said it's not recommended while breastfeeding. unsure.gif That makes me a little nervous because I'm taking an awful lot of it.

Then I was talking to my sister today and she said that she took diflucan for a vaginal yeast infection while she was bf'ing and got a fungus on her lung. blink.gif She said that it doesn't actually get rid of the yeast just knock it loose - I think she had a much smaller dose than I am getting though so I don't know.

I really want to just take the stuff and get rid of the thrush - I've had it for 6 months and it's getting so old. But now I'm just a little wary of it. unsure.gif

5littleladies replied: Well I don't know about the fungus on the lung-I did a search and didn't come up with anything and it really doesn't make sense that a person would get a fungus while taking something that gets rid of fungus but who knows. I didn't have anything like that though. wink.gif She is right though-it doesn't kill yeast, it just stops them from multiplying which is why you need to be on it for so long when being treated for thrush.

I would suggest you do a google search on taking diflucan while breastfeeding-you will get a number of reassuring results. Here is one I found helpful- http://www.asklenore.info/breastfeeding/fluconazole.html.

hug.gif I know it's scary taking things when you are nursing, but I'm sure it will be fine and you really do need to get rid of this-You've been dealing with it for way too long! hug.gif

coasterqueen replied: I understand your concerns too, but I assure you it's safe. Every drug has side effects, but I think often times the side effects for diflucan can be overexaggerated by doctors and others.

Here is a good link on diflucan you might find helpful: http://www.kellymom.com/newman/20fluconazole.html

I would never recommend something like this if I didn't think it was safe and I wouldn't take it myself if I had any doubts. I had to take it numerous times with Kylie.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: Thanks for the links. I couldn't help but worry a little bit. tongue.gif

Karen did you use the all purpose nipple ointment Dr. Newman is talking about when you had thrush? It sounded like he thinks you should use it along with the diflucan. dunno.gif I really just don't want to screw this up I'm so sick of this! wacko.gif

My sister - the one who told me not to take Diflucan - said I should put plain yogurt on nursing pads and wear them at night to help get rid of it. That sounds really gross and kind of weird to me but I don't know maybe it would help. What do you think?

jacobsmama replied: I would say you should use it since you have been battling this for so long. We at work usually try other things first but it is safte to take with pregnancy and while breastfeeding and there is only one dose 150mg. So I would use it but just my opinion. Good luck hope this gets better soon wink.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Well I used clomitrozole, which is like the all purpose nipple ointment. It wouldn't hurt to use it that's for sure.

I've actually heard of using yogurt in your bra, but ICK. I couldn't do it. tongue.gif

If you were given the right prescription dosage it should cure it. I only know one person diflucan did not work for.

coasterqueen replied:
You only prescribe one 150mg dosage? That is NOT going to rid of thrush. I have found many many doctors prescribing the wrong dosage, but if one goes to a lactation consultant they will confirm the dosage amount in the above link I provided. I couldn't get my doctor to prescribe the right dosage until I had my LC make him understand that he was incorrectly dosing me.

I have run into numerous poor women out there being dosed wrong and then they quit because they can never get rid of the thrush. It's very very sad.

mckayleesmom replied:
I took it while breastfeeding....I didn't have a yeast infection but I had a really bad rash after having Russell...Remember that? They gave me that to see if it would relieve some of the itching wacko.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
I think she mwans that only 150mg gets prescribed to get rid of thrush... as opposed to a dosage, of say, 50mg or 100mg... not just one pill. tongue.gif

coasterqueen replied:
150mg dosage in several pills total is WAY not enough wink.gif.

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
i meant 150mg per pill....

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Ok I wasn't sure if there was something I could just buy - the one he talks about on the handout thingy online sounds like you have to mix one up yourself. rolleyes.gif

So far I am not feeling any better but Jennifer assures me that it gets worse before it gets better so I'm still hoping. happy.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Yeah I don't do "mixing" of anything. tongue.gif So I just bought clomitrizole. Just make sure if you use that that you wipe it off before he nurses. It can get worse before getting better. See how it goes and if you are still having the issues after you are done with the meds let me know. Now are you doing all the other precautions necessary while taking meds? Like no anti-bacterials soaps, washing towels, rags, bras daily, etc, etc, etc. Vinegar rinses, etc???????? Because you should still do all that other stuff while taking the meds. I say stick to acidophilus too for about a week to 10 days after the yeast is gone (or yogurt).

jem0622 replied: Diflucan rocks! It is perfectly safe. I know it is confusing the read the label and your Dr. should have addressed that.

How long is your treatment? I had a loaded dose on the first day and then took it for a month. It kicked the thrush monster out for good!

ETA: My loaded dose was 400mg. My daily dose after that was 200 mg. You need a higher dose!

HUGS

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Yep that's the dose I have... except I'm only taking it for 2 weeks after the initial dose. The doctor did say to come back if it wasn't gone by then though so she'd probably give me more if I needed it.

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
I haven't been really. unsure.gif I want to but we're having problems with our electricity and half the house keeps losing power... the washer and dryer being in the half that's having problems. sad.gif Plus my stove is one of the things that's on that half so I haven't been able to boil Andrew's paci's either.

I can wash clothes during the times the electricity is working but I can't use the dryer at all because it drains too much power and shuts everything off. dry.gif But I guess I'll have to do it anyways and try to hang stuff to dry ~ I need Dh to bring me some vinegar home though. rolleyes.gif

I have been forgetting to take the acidophilus too. blush.gif Thanks for the reminder.
