peanut butter

Kaitlin'smom replied: my ped said after 1 yr old but if your family has any history of nut allergies then to wait until 18 months or longer
kit_kats_mom replied: CHOKABLE FOODS To minimize the risk of a baby or toddler choking, follow these safe feeding tips:
Be careful of big globs of food, such as golf ball-sized, pasty globs of white bread or spoonfuls of peanut butter. Even though these foods are soft, babies can choke on them. Don't spread peanut butter too thick, and monitor how quickly the bread gets packed into the mouth. The more whole grains in a bread, the less likely it is to form a pasty glob.

jenn3 replied: Ive read until there atleast 3. Becuase of choking and food allergies
"Foods to avoid until your infant is at least a year old include cow's milk and other dairy products, citrus fruits and juices, and wheat. Also, avoid giving eggs until age two, and peanuts (as smooth peanut butter) and shellfish until your child is at least three years old. Whole peanuts and tree nuts should be avoided until your child is four because of the choke hazard" Website Quote was taken from

Mommy2BAK replied: Well, I had no idea, but p.b sandwiches are currently Blakely's favorite.
ammommy replied: My ped said at least until 1, preferably until 2. SO it seems that the concensus is anywhere from 1-3
JAYMESMOM replied: My ped said 2. I am waiting with Jayme till then. She is not missing out by having it and I worry about allergies.
DansMom replied: Well, with my allergic kid we have to wait until at least age 5, and then get cleared with testing before introducing. For the average kid, every ped. will say something different. Allergy to peanuts is on the rise, exponentially, and nobody knows why. I recommend waiting until age 3, but sometimes if they get accidental exposure and handle it well you can stop worrying.
MyLuvBugs replied: hmmmm. Thanks everyone. I'll have to talk to my new ped about it. I worry that she is allergic though. When I was breastfeeding her, I was craving PB, but her face would break out in a rash everytime I had PB and then breast fed her. It was really wierd. Hopefully it was just a fluke. Thanks again.
six_kids_at_28 replied: My kids too I would say around a year..thats when I started. If you notice any reactions, take him/her to a ped. quick.
My3LilMonkeys replied: our ped told us a year - but DH and I have no allergies at all so our kids are not at as high of a risk for allergies.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I read 3 years. I'm waiting that long too!
My2Beauties replied: See now I read the reason the allergies to peanuts is on the rise is because people are not feeding them to their children anymore. I was reading a study I'll have to search for it that is saying that it may be actually more beneficial for children to eat more adult foods at younger ages so as to immunize them from allergies later in life and this is the reason food allergies are on the rise because babies have such bland diets in the first place, matter of fact I think it was a link someone posted in a thread in here. I give Hanna bites of PB sandwiches and she does fine, I won't let her have peanuts because of the shell, but PB I see no problem with.
Jamison'smama replied: Jamison was the same way---she was born in September and in late October--after Halloween, we had far too many Snickers left over that I had to eat to get rid of---we discovered the connection between my peanut intake and her rashes. The lactation consultant and pediatrician said to wait until at least 2 since she had that reaction. She's fine now at 3.
ilovemybaby replied: Unless there is history of peanut/nut allergies in your family then peanut butter should be fine. Abby has been having it since she was about 15 months old. I only use the smooth stuff though. It doesn't have peanut pieces in it.
ilovemybaby replied: I read not to have peanuts or peanut butter during pregnancy but I had peanut butter all the time when I was pregnant with Abby. She is not allergic to peanuts. I think it's a load of **** and it's probably the other way around. If you don't eat certain foods during pregnancy then you'll probably have a child that's allergic to them IMO
luvmykids replied: All mine started eating it at a year, and a tip my ped gave me is to add a tiny bit of milk to the pb to thin it out, or mix it and the jelly together before putting it on the bread (also thins it out, makes it a little less sticky to swallow if they take too big a bite)
coasterqueen replied: I can't remember if we waited til one or two. Either way, I'm not very paranoid about the choking hazard because I am right there when my children are eating, if something should happen.
