motrin or tylenol - which do you give your kids

Celestrina wrote: Ben's pediatrician always says to use tylenol. Someone I know says that most pediatricians now say to use motrin. What does your doc say to give them? What have you found to work best? if you listed other, please state what you give them for a fever.

fashionmumofboys replied: I used to use Tylenol, but now have switched to Motrin. That's what my Dr. has now recommended, so we go mostly with the Motrin.

luvmykids replied: We start off with Motrin for the first dose, then Tylenol. Our ped says it's a little faster for the jump start and then Tylenol should keep it down.

punkeemunkee'smom replied: Tylenol works better for Tay on a fever. I have friends whos kids do better with Motrin so I guess it is all about what works best for the indiviual child! smile.gif

MamaJAM replied: It depends on what other symtoms they have...if any. If they have a headache with no other symptoms - or just a fever - or I think the fever is related to eye strain, etc.....then tylenol. If they have a fever and are achy anywhere or have a fever or headache caused by a bump or bruise - or if the fever is on the higher side...then advil/motrin.

MomToJade&Jordan replied: I have always used tylenol. Maybe because tylenol works better for me then advil. I was also told not to give my children motrin so I've stayed away from it.

mom21kid2dogs replied: Neither. She's never had a fever significant enough to medicate. I used Tylenol drops once for her with teeth pain when she was a baby. Nothing else in the past 4 .5 years. Geeze, how lucky is that?

TeagansMom609 replied: I mostly always use Motrin. I think Tylenol is a sham. It takes FOREVER to work and doesnt work good on pain. When I was in the hospital the L&D nurse said the same thing, Tylenol is BS, she swears it doesnt do a thing. If Teagan has a BAD fever, like 104, I alternate between Advil and Tylenol rather then giving the same med every 4 hours. Tylenol always takes over an hour to start working.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: I've been giving Andrew Tylenol for his teething pain and it helps. I also gave it to him a few weeks ago when he had a fever and it worked just fine to lower his temp. Tylenol has always seemed safer to me than ibuprofen - not sure why. dunno.gif I mostly take tylenol myself, except for af cramps then I take Advil. wink.gif

3_call_me_mama replied: We use tylenol if necessary. (I dont' do medication for a fever unless it's over 102 degrees) Our ped and several others have told us to NEVER give an infant Motrin of Ibuprofen, or any kids under teh age of 2 really. But even then it's not good for them. Fever is teh body's natural response to ridding teh body of toxins and germs and such. It is tryignto clean itself out. By reducing the fever teh body takes longer to rid itself. I'll look more and find more conclusive info if anyoen wants. I just don't rememebr exactally what teh wording was so i dont; want to get wupte later on a miss quote.

3xsthefun replied: I have always used Tylenol for both girls. It seems to work better for Maegan then the off brand stuff. I haven't tried Motrin so I'm not even sure how well it would work for her.

Their doctor has told me to use both before.

jem0622 replied: It really depends on the ailment. I've used both and keep them in the house.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I use both, but my ped recently told me that Motrin works faster and longer.

coasterqueen replied: We use tylenol. Our ped said to only use motrin on EXTREME cases, especially in kids under two because it can cause seizures. I think there was a post on this a long time ago, an article. I think we've used Motrin once w/Megan and only because we ran out of tylenol.

luvmykids replied:
My ped told me to do that too but I haven't had to try it yet.

booey2 replied: Tylenol or tempra are our first lines of defence and if it is a fever that I can't control with just tylenol then we use motrin or advil as well. It really depends on what I have in the cupboard. Once Thomas moves out of the liquids then I can give them both chewables and it will probably be tylenol all the time.

Kaitlin'smom replied: for the rare times we used anything it was tylenol. I do have mortin for her but have only used it when absoluty nessary

CosmetologyMommy replied: I do not think it matters. I just always give tylenol because that is what is always on my mind.

ediep replied: usually motrin but I have both in the house.

CosmetologyMommy replied: is there really a difference?

A&A'smommy replied: I voted other becuase I will use both.. depending on the temp. if its not that bad and its bedtime I will give her tylenol so she wont wake up with a worse one... if its bad I will have motrin

TeagansMom609 replied:
Heck yea there's a difference! If you have a bad headache, nack pain, etc., which actually works for you? Advil is an anti-inflammatory, its WAY better with pain. Honestly, I dont know what Tylenol does, it never seems to do a thing for me. Thats why when Teagan is sick I prefer to give her childrens Advil because I know if she has body aches or anything while she has a fever, Advil will definitly make her feel better. Plus, Tylenol freaks me out a little bit because I know if you take too much it can hurt your liver. (I know a couple people who took too much and had to have liver therapy)

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: For really high, stubborn fevers, I alternate tylenol and motrin every 4 hours. They work on different pathways and are metabolized by different organs so I know he won't overdose or get toxic complications.

3_call_me_mama replied:
And ibuprofen can ruin your stomach lining!
And actually Tylenol works fra beter on me. I really think that it is each indivaiuls body responds differently to differnt medications.

ilovemybaby replied: We use both depending on how bad the pain/fever is. Because you can use both together. But if I am only using one I use Motrin. And it lasts longer too. It says something like 6-8 hours whereas Tylenol is 4-6 hours.

~~*Missi*~~ replied: We rotate.
Motrin Tylenol every 4-6 hours. Usually every 6 until it breaks.

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
I agree, taking too much of anything is going to cause problems somewhere. wink.gif Tylenol is perfectly safe if you give her the right dosage. When I have a bad neck ache (which is a lot wacko.gif ) sometimes I take Tylenol, and sometimes I take Advil. Honestly they work about the same for me ~ and sometimes neither one works. I wouldn't feel comfortable giving my kids ibuprofen until they're older.

edited for spelling. tongue.gif

BAC'sMom replied: I use both.
