jake to the new allergist today - is this guy for real?

boyohboyohboy wrote: ok, let me tell you when I first got to the office, my first impression was LEAVE.
he was ill dressed, and he was late to the office.
He told us (in a nut shell) that he feels jake does not have GERD as the GI does, he feels that jake has terrible allergies..
he said that if a person has a positive RAST test then that means that a person has an allergy..he felt skin tests were a waste of time, especially in kids, and that food allergies change over time, that just because a skin test was positive, actually eating the food might not cause harm of any kind....but a RAST test says you have the gene in you that says you will react in some form..
(keep in mind I havent slept so this was hard to absorb)
he asked to stop the prevacid, (said it was actually an antihistamine) he said that he feels jake is producing extra stomach acid as an allergic reaction to a food allergy, as well as the diarrhea. He ordered tagament two times a day, and then atarax daily, he said benadryl after a reaction has occured is like putting a bandaid on it, that you have to take a antihistamine all the time to stop it from attacking, if he is on the antihistamine, then the allergy can not attack him, or bother him, because it will block the mast cell from reacting...

so he also took him off his pediasure for three days and wants to attempt to calm down his gut, and then have the atarax get in his system and then start adding foods back..

this goes against everything I have read and heard on these boards...
but after he spent so much time with us, gave us his cell phone and asked me to check in daily with him, and seemed concerned about jake, he said he has suffered long enough and wanted to help him..he is an older dr for sure..we see him inthe office again next week.

what do you think? I mean does this sound like just old time med..or could it have merit.
we did stop the prevacid, and started the tagament only because it reads the same as the other med, he just said he has more luck with it, and it sounded like it would heal any inflamation he has....

I am not sure what do to...
and we have some many dr's involved now, its hard to know where to turn..especially now that they are contridicting each other...

lovemy2 replied: Ouch, I can see where you are confused, I would be too - I don't really know what to tell you except that once you decide on a course of action - you should stick with it - some things take time to really get the full effect of......I wish I knew which way to tell you to go - it does sound like it has merit, but who am I - certainly not an MD...

Boo&BugsMom replied: Honestly, it couldn't hurt to at least try his way. At least if you try and it does no good, you know to turn elsewhere then. With all the problems with no answers and coming to a dead end every time, I'd probably try it and see where it leads you. hug.gif

A&A'smommy replied: I really don't know honey I would just go with what you feel is right, if you think this dr. is going to help him then go by his advice and if not then find another dr. hug.gif hug.gif I feel so bad for you guys, ya'll have had a such a rough time, i hope this helps him!!!

Jamison'smama replied: Wow, that is a lot of information. I do know that food allergies can cause a lot of digestive symptoms. Jamison had the skin test then they followed up with the Rast test for anything that proved to be positive (eggs). They told me that the tests were somewhat accurate but were more of a starting place. A negative test does not mean there is not an allergy but a positive test usually means there is but they follow with the RAST test to verify.

I agree---can't hurt to try it this way. I have found that the allergists that I have seen have been a little eccentric. I even asked my pediatrician about it...he agreed.

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: I can see where you are confused...having multiple doctors tell you multiple different things just make it 100% frustrating.
I would try it his way. Nothing is going to cause him more harm and it's not like you are any closer to answers now than you were last week...with trying something new you might get one answer (which I would love to hear one answer) and hopefully you can actually get to the bottom of all of his digestive issues.
Good luck and KUP

flirtycuddle replied: The antihistimen part is the same thing my allergist told me for my 6 month old so for 3 months hes been on one. As for as long as hes on one he wont react is bs. My son still reacts if he comes in contact with his allergies. We had the spt test done first and it showed positive to the top 8 plus corn. I pulled all foods and went formula only and am only now starting to introduce foods back in. He showed a slight allergy to wheat when in fact when i introduced it back in he is fine. Also just cuz a RAST test shows positive doesnt mean its a for sure allergy according to my allergist(every allergist feels different) We did the rast to get all the numbers and find out if he is out growing them or not. An spt gives a starting point well did for us and so far that has helped him more then anything. What food did the allergist say to give him to eat for now??? RAST tests can take up to 2 weeks or longer to get results and if he is still getting the food he reacts to nothing is going to improve for a while. Also once u do get the rast back it can take 2-5 weeks(from what i was told) for all the allergens to be out of his body so full results wont show right away. If you need to talk or what not just pm me. I have been dealing with it for 3 months so far and it is hard.

CantWait replied: I think at this point anything is worth a try. I also don't think it's neccisarily a one doc is crazy the other isn't (for lack of better words) but just as he said, he's had more success with the route he goes. First impressions really are important, sorry this one didn't work out, hope his plan of action does. hug.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: we decided that since the tagament is so close to what the other GI dr ordered, (prevacid) that we are going to do what the allergist says and try to work thru this.
right now he has him off food and wanted him to stop the pediasure, and use some kind of baby formula, called nutragem for three days, but jake wont take it..
so we will be talking to the dr today as to what to feed him.

I am just hoping this is what is wrong, and this will help him.

lisar replied:
I agree.

flirtycuddle replied: Nutramigen is for babies with allergies and most can tolerate it. Only like 10% cant. He must suspect a milk and soy allergy then cuz of the type. Most soy allergic kids can tolerate soy letchin and soy oil. If he won't drink it you could ask about the neocate line of products such as neocate junior or neocat +1 or EO28. The EO28 is actually flavored to. I would rather get him drinking the nutramigen cuz neocate is expensive since it all amino acid based. Im not sure but elecare might also have some of the same things which is also amino acid based. Taking him off food will also give his insides time to heal cuz of the allergens basically attacking his system. But healing can take yrs. Also if the tests all come back negative for allergens dont be surprised. He can still be allergic espically if hes have GI issues since from what i have read gi issues is a different type of allergen reaction that doesnt always show up. I dont know if the allergist said anything about EOS as part of his possible problem since he has so many GI issues.

DansMom replied: That is a lot to take in---I would be hopelessly confused and a little angry. Conflicting medical advice when your child is so sick is infuriating. I tend to the opinion that food allergies are the source of Jake's problems, and that trying that angle again with eliminating Pediasure for a bit may help matters. Despite the doctor's lame bedside manner, I'd trust the specialist over the general practitioner. Daniel's GP gave me advice that was contrary to what I'd learned in my own research---he wanted me to keep trying to introduce the foods he was allergic to, while the specialist said to steer clear for as long as possible.

For Jake, it's difficult to only be given food options that he won't take. Can he/will he eat bland, non-allergenic solids like rice or potato with olive oil, or banana? The antihistamine angle---well, I've never done that preventively or routinely, only as an antidote to a reaction. I do know a young child who takes Zantac daily for seasonal allergies and she seems ok. I haven't heard of them being used for food allergies preventively---that doesn't mean it's wrong, I just haven't seen this done. What is the antihistamine this doctor recommends?

msoulz replied: Oh Stacy I am so sorry you're being pulled in a different direction now. But if the GI's advice did not help, hopefully this guy will. Looks can be deceiving, for sure. And sometimes the "old" stuff is the best.

As usual I have nothing to offer except hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif One for each member (and future member!) of the family. sleep.gif
