how would u list it? - selling stuff

boyohboyohboy wrote: we are trying to sell a very heavy very large entertainment center...its one that we got at an amish store that is solid wood...and way to heavy for even two people to pick up.
what is the best way to advertise to sell it? would u recommend craigs list? or the newspaper? ebay?
i am also concerned about people asking to come to the house to see it, but we do want to sell it....i just dont want to be alone with the kids when strangers come to the house....
how do you sell large items?

grapfruit replied: Craig's list is great b/c it's free. But it probably helps to be near a large city. Are you? Otherwise E-Bay, just take pictures and post it and then ship it. No visits needed! thumb.gif

If anybody calls just tell them that they can't look at it until your DH is home. (I guess that's if you go the Craig's list or newspaper way)

Mommy2Isabella replied: I wouldn't ebay ... to ship the thing would be REALLY EXPENSIVE. So if you do ebay, do it for pick up only.

grapfruit replied:
I thought you could include shipping on the order....Although I don't know much about Ebay

boyohboyohboy replied: do lots of people really use craigs list? or is ebay the most popular place to look when you are searching for something..?
does listing it as pick up only limit the people who will buy it though? and wont the buyer have to pay for shipping if they want it, however i have no idea how you ship something this large.

Kaitlin'smom replied: if you e-bay the buyer normally pays shipping but I would make sure its listed that it would be professinoally packaged, hench its gonna be expensive. Me if I were to e-bay it. it would be listed FOR PICK UP ONLY, no delivery or shipping. I woudl check rules on craigs list, I dont use it but I thought that was stuff being given away not sold, but never using them I dunno. If you do go craigs list or local paper then only schedle peopel to look at it/pick up up when DH is home.

lovemy2 replied: Craigslist or Newspapers - I can't imagine you could SHIP something like that if you sell it on ebay?? Who would pay that for shipping...as for people coming to see it only schedule them to come when DH is home...

Craigslist is free but the stuff is SOLD - they do have a barter category -

Mommy2Isabella replied: ebay - listing it as pick up only would limit buyers, but think

1. how are you going to get it to the post office
2. if it weighs more than I think 150lbs it has to be shipped freight and that is WAY PRICEY
3. how would you package it...

** Shipping on a vaccumm we sold VIA UPS was 112 dollars ... 12 dollars MORE than what the person bought it for ... **

So something like a big piece of furniture it probably going to run you a couple hundred dollars ...

Calimama replied: I would list on Ebay as pick up only or I would call the post office and see what details they can give you on shipping something that big. Good luck!! wink.gif

well said wink.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: I buy from a lot of different places but for something like that, I'd go to Craig's List for sure. I'm going to pick up my NIB $50 Thule 4 bike Reese Hitch carrier tonight that I got on there this AM thumb.gif
BTW, you can list on EBay for local pickup only (no shipping) I seriously doubt you could ever get what it's worth if you include shipping (let alone take the thing apart for shipping.

luvmykids replied: I wouldn't even mess with getting shipping prices, much less the risk of something happening during shipping; if it's a good deal and someone wants it bad enough they'd pick it up wink.gif

I do check Craigslist a lot, I figure if I can get the deal/item I want locally, why bother with ebay....I haven't sold anything there though because of the same reason as you, I don't want people coming when DH isn't here.

Di-you may be thinking of Freecycle, where you list things you're giving away for free.

msoulz replied: Hey Stacy, is there a board at your church on which you can post?
