free credit reports? - web sites?

boyohboyohboy wrote: help? i am looking for a good site to go and check all THREE credit reports..
i tried credit report.com, but it wanted $1 to sign up and then it forwards you to some shopping rewards thing, and its a mess.
i know there is one the government recommends using but what is it?
i dont mind paying for it either, as long as i can instantly see all three reports.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Keep in mind it lowers your score every time you request a report.

Calimama replied:
Really? My friend told me that but she isn't the most reliable on information. tongue.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: i do it yearly and so far i have not seen a neg affect on my report..
i do it because i was a victim of idenity theft and it needs checked freq.

i also have an alert on the account. thanks guys...

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
We just had one done to get our morgage... and yes, it lowers it about 2 points. Woohoo. rolleyes.gif

Same with applications to credit cards etc that get denied or whatever... each time lowers it a few points.

Calimama replied:
Oh wow I never knew that!! Thanks for the info! thumb.gif

redchief replied:
Requesting your credit report DOES NOT lower your credit score. Free credit report requests through the web site listed here ( https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp ) will not change your credit score.

New inquiries by credit companies, however, will lower your credit score. In the United States the FTC has changed the rules regarding this from each inquiry to inquiries over a certain period of time, because many people now shop for credit. For instance, we remortgaged our home last year to turn the equity into renovations. We shopped for the mortgage with four different agencies, and were only penalized for a single inquiry because all of the inquiries happened over a 30 day period and were for similar products.

Once again, requesting your federally guaranteed free credit report for the purpose of reviewing the report does not effect your FICA credit score. If it does, then submit a correction to whichever of the big three screwed up.

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
My bad. You're right. Our credit report was requested through a credit company. emlaugh.gif Duuuuh.... iamwithstupid.gif

redchief replied:
If you're "duhh", so are a lot of other people, including me. Until last year I didn't know diddly about credit scores or how they're compiled. I certainly wasn't sure how to go about making corrections (and there were several major errors in mine). It's a confusing mess for people who work the system, let alone the rest of us who have to live within it.

My2Beauties replied:
Thanks Ed, I was going to post the same thing, but you worded it so much more eloquently than I would have.

grapfruit replied:
He's good for that isn't he? happy.gif
