J-rod wrote: ok Steph loves seafood and we have heard she cant have it. well i was thinking there would be some kind of seafood she can have as long as its not raw correct?
anyone know of anything she can have? we planned on going to dinner tonight.
C&K*s Mommie replied: I believe it is no shellfish at all. Esp raw.
And tuna in moderation. That is what I was told by my midwife.

C&K*s Mommie replied: Here are some other things to avoid, or eat in moderation while she is PG.
Imported soft cheeses are usually best to avoid. Here is a short list of soft cheeses to avoid:
feta (goat cheese) brie Camembert blue-veined cheeses, like Roquefort
To prevent infection, take these precautions:
Eat hard cheeses, like cheddar, instead of soft cheeses during pregnancy. If you do use soft cheeses during pregnancy, cook them until they are boiling (bubbling). Make sure the labels of your dairy products say "pasteurized" on the label. Make sure you consume meat, poultry or seafood that has been cooked thoroughly! Here is a list of meats, poultry and fish to avoid while pregnant:
Hot dogs Sausages Deli meat Under cooked meat like beef and chicken Pates Ready to eat cold seafood Raw eggs and raw egg dishes Raw seafood, especially shellfish
J-rod replied: well we dont eat those cheases...she has a huge list of foods to avoid. lol
egss make her sick now....so thats safe. lol
she just really really wants some crab legs and lobster.
gr33n3y3z replied: I always ate seafood but not raw and NOT Blue Fish which I hate any way or Weak fish. I mean I didnt eat it every night for dinner but at least a few or more.
C&K*s Mommie replied: I found this just because I was more curious anyways about it. Seafood, Mercury and Pregnancy I also ran across varying opinions in general too. There are only two choices, IMO avoid it while PG just to be on the safe side, or eat in moderation. If she choices to fulfill her cravings, and eats tonight, she should wait a week or two before consuming a small-moderate amount again. JMO
Mommy2Isabella replied: I HATE SEAFOOD ... But when I went to my OB they give you a list. They want you to avoid fish that are HIGH in mercury, such as shellfish, and shark. Certain types of Sushi are OK.
This is what I found ONLINE
Seafood Do's and Don'ts for Expecting and Nursing Moms:
1. DON'T eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish because they contain high levels of mercury.
2. DO eat up to 12 ounces (2 to 3 meals) of other purchased fish and shellfish a week. Five of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.
3. DO mix up the types of fish and shellfish you eat.
4. DON'T eat the same type of fish or shellfish more than once a week.
5. DO check local advisories about the safety of fish caught by family and friends in your local rivers and streams. If no advice is available, you can safely eat up to 6 ounces (one meal) per week of fish you catch from local waters, but don't consume any other fish during that week.
Hope that helps you out a little bit!
redchief replied: I found another guide in researching this topic that I thought was very informative regarding seafood consumption. It is a document released by the NJ Dept. of Health on seafood consumption among women (children are also mentioned as included in the guidelines). NJ is the most polluted state in the union so I figured their data would be the closest to a worst case scenario as could be found in the USA. The document can be found here: http://www.state.nj.us/health/eoh/foodweb/fishguid.htm
There was also a link to the US Food and Drug Admin. in the document that I did not follow... I'm supposed to be working.
J-rod replied: thank you guys! guess my baby is getting some seafood tonight.....think we will go up to Pa and go to Red lobster. she deserves it..... i figure if she eats some crb and/or lobster 2 times during the pregnancy it will be ok.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Being pregnant, I will only eat fresh water fish, meaning trout from a lake. And sometimes salmon from cold water like Alaska. I avoid warm water fish like shark, makeral, tuna, mahi mahi, etc, because of the mercury content. Also, I avoid all shellfish because they are bottom feeders and they pickup a lot of bacteria. Who hasn't got sick from a bad muscle at one time or another...ewww! I wouldn't take the risk although I love them!
Fish oil (Omega 3's) are VERY beneficial to the development of your baby's brain, so I take a capsule of fish oil everyday with my prenatal. You can also get Omega 3's in eggs, nuts and some cereals. I eat hotdogs and deli meat, but I cook them well and only eat them when I make myself.
J-rod replied: she takes the fish oil pills. Duet i believe it is.
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: I was pregnant with my first during Joe's Crab Shacks 9.99 a pound summer We were there probably once a week and I loved every second of it. She is a little ornery but I'm pretty sure it's just because she's female and not because of the over abundance of crab
mckayleesmom replied: I don't know if you read my posts about my nephew Peyton, but one of the things they suspect is wrong with him is Mercury poisoning.....My sister was a huge seafood eater while pregnant with him.
kit_kats_mom replied: I ate it all. Just keep in mind that there are millions of Japanese women who are pregnant and eat sushi and other seafood dishes without any problems. I only ate sushi at really reputible resteraunts and I shied away from raw oysters and I didnt' eat fish everyday but I did eat a lot
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Ugh I had those my last PG. I had to stop taking the fish oil ones and just took the regular vitamin that came with it because I couldn't stop burping up the taste. I might try them again this time though... I know it's supposed to be good for the baby.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Strange...I don't know the brand of the ones I have, but I have never tasted anything from them. Was your's a gel filled capsule or a pill? I imagine a pill would taste bad.
