decorating advice

PrairieMom wrote: I am planning on painting our room some time in the near future, so I am looking for inspiration. I was thinking about painting a blue-ish color in a flat paint, with the same color painted in High gloss 12 inch vertical stripes.
I found this bedding, do you think it would be to much?

I wanted the room to have a beachy type feel, and am going to frame 8x10 pics of our trips to the beach also.

TheOaf66 replied: I would be the wrong person to ask...hang a beer sign and a NFL flag laugh.gif

Our Lil' Family replied: OOOO, I like that comforter!

PrairieMom replied:
note that I'm asking y-all and not my DH. he doesn't have a say when it comes to decorating. laugh.gif

PrairieMom replied:
The price seems right, but I'm a little nervous about buting it online with out seeing it ya know? plus I don't know if stripes on stripes would be to much.

lisar replied: I like it. I think it would look good.

lisar replied:
My dh is the same way. If he had his choice it would all be PLAIN WHITE... biggrin.gif

Our Lil' Family replied: I like the idea of the wall stripes but like you..it's hard to determine if it would look ok without actually seeing it all together.

Our Lil' Family replied: I think you should write Oprah and have Nate do your bedroom!!!! laugh.gif

hawkshoe replied: I like your idea for the walls and I like the comforter, but I don't think I like the two together. JMO

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I like it Tara! Our master bedroom is actually very close to that blue color and I have dark brown accents in it as well. We are looking for dark wood furniture at the moment, but I have similar dark framed prints hanging right over the bed. I can take a pic if you want? I always call it "Tiffany" blue...like the color of the Tiffany jewelry store bags. I love it! It's the only room in my house that makes me feel cool and collected...sorta like being at a beach! I of course say go for it!

TheOaf66 replied:
me either laugh.gif laugh.gif

CantWait replied: I love the bedding, but I think all that blue on the walls would be way to much. What about doing the bottom of the wall a blue, and the upper part a sandy brown, or all the room a sandy brown.

CantWait replied: Bwwaahahaha actually the picture of the room is pretty much the brown I was thinking. When I look at it twice I said skip the blue all together. I like the brown.

PrairieMom replied: I know, the more I think about it the more I think I should do brown, but my room is already that color and i really wanted a change. I could still do the stripes in the brown and jsut make it a little darker or something. Maybe I need to keep looking for beddng... dry.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Tara, not to burst your bubble, but an old friend of ours tried this in the color yellow, and it looked really funny and silly. Whatever color you do, I would just go with one type of finish. Or if you go stripes, do two different hues. Maybe the same 'color' but twos different hues, like a darker blue and a lighter blue. I love the bedding though!!!

I would like to do our bedroom in a very pale blue with gold and yellow accents someday. I just have to find the right bedspread/comforter first.

PrairieMom replied: really? it looked silly? huh. Maybe I'll do a little more research.

mom2my2cuties replied: smile.gif I love hearing all these decorating stories - and ideas. smile.gif

I agree with Jeanie - only do one finish. smile.gif

Our bedroom has goldish brown walls - our bedding is this beautiful dark royal purple with Gold designs, dark furniture smile.gif Looks sooooo great!

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Well, she wasn't a good decorator to begin with though. She could have done it wrong, but it looked awefully silly the way she did it. After she broke up with her boyfriend (who is still our friend) and moved out of his house we teased him about it until he changed it back.

If you do get that comforter set I personally like the light taupe color in it. Maybe even do one accent wall in the dark brown. I love accent walls.

PrairieMom replied: Did it look like this? This is the technique I wanted to use, with more of a grey-ish blue

Boo&BugsMom replied:
We have those kind of walls too. Our room is a golden brown/tan. I hate our comforter set and colors in the room and I want to change it but I don't know what will look good with it. I don't want to paint it again since it was just painted two years ago.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Yep, pretty similar. Something just didn't look right with it. Maybe it's just not my taste. unsure.gif

PrairieMom replied: Ive never seen it in real life. its so hard to tell in a picture. I can not paint just one color tho, I absolutely must make things difficult for myself. rolleyes.gif laugh.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
I say go accent wall! thumb.gif

PrairieMom replied:
Heres another thought, will the different finishes make the texture of my wall different so If i ever repaint the stripes will still show? I don't want to do anything that will make me re-texurize my walls. wink.gif

kimberley replied: thumb.gif i like it.. not too femine or too masculine.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
I know when our friend re-did the walls he had to sand them down a bit because the taping of the stripes made somewhat of a paint border (paint thicking up on the seams), if that makes sense. He did have a more difficult time redoing it later, but not terribly. It didn't have anything to do with the finishes though, just the stripes themselves from using the tape.

PrairieMom replied:
huh. THat would have been something to think about before I did stripes in the other 2 bedrooms. rolleyes.gif

coasterqueen replied: LOVE the bedding and the price is too good to pass up IMO (as long as it's a good comforter) BUT I do not like the thought of striped walls with striped bedding. That would be too much for me.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Let me reiterate though, that our friend's gf could have done it all wrong. She did not have a knack for decorating, painting, anything. She could have messed it up. She messed a lot of stuff up in his house, to be honest, so I wouldn't be surprised.

PrairieMom replied: I think I'm back to stripey walls and a different bed set. rolleyes.gif I wanted something that reminded me of the beach, and the stripey bed isn't doing that anyway. dry.gif

luvmykids replied: I love the two-finish stripes, a friend of mine did it and it looks GREAT! thumb.gif

CantWait replied:
Stripes like that remind me of a circus. I remember watching Trading Spaces one day and Hildi did a room, actually I think twice with stripes and both times I thought it looked horrible. rolling_smile.gif

luvmykids replied:
She did do a circus room once or twice but they were gaudy colors. She also did this technique with a dark brown and it looked really nice. I would have KILLED her if she did the yellow and red stripes in my house rolling_smile.gif

hawkshoe replied: Friends of ours did their living room with the stripe effect you are talking about. It really looks nice.

mom2my2cuties replied:
What about something with a soft oceany blue or something? Like you would see in a beach side cabana?

PrairieMom replied:
I was thinking about a bolder smokey greyish blue for the walls, then I was going to do Latte/toffee painted suqares where I am going to hang the pictures, but now I am thinking about reversing that and just doing the blue where I hang the pictures, becuase I would like to find blue bedding , and blue bedding with blue walls will be to much. rolleyes.gif
I'm going to decorate a mirror with shells I found on the beach, and do the picture frames with some sand that I bought back.

mom2my2cuties replied: That sounds like it will be pretty.

kristy-n-chad replied:
I agree! I love baby blue and brown together.
