college?
Boys r us wrote: have you thought about how you're going to get your little ones in College, I mean of course they're all going to be straight A students and get a full scholorship to Harvard but do you have a savings set up or anything for them yet? just in case they don't
A&A'smommy replied: I don't but we are planning to start one asap! We should have already done it thought...
Julie (jem0622) replied: I haven't set up a savings and don't plan to. And Suze Orman recommends that you don't go broke financing your children in the college years because you will hurt in retirement. I plan to encourage and work with the boys to achieve so that they can get financial help (for free) and help them apply for financial aid. I would not have my degree without financial aid and I taught myself and filed it all year after year. My parents did enough for me growing up and don't need that hanging over their heads.

booey2 replied: We have thought about it but my mom has started funds for each of her grandchildren she put $25 per month into a RESP and the gov. here matches it. Thank goodness for grandma's. We would also doing anything we had to to send them to school. We both went and I had gov. assistance back when they still had grants and loans, now you only get loans.
Boys r us replied: We have a savings set up for both of the boys, we just both put whatever we can in them from each paycheck. It adds up quick! My parents also set up funds for all of their grandkids, so that will help some too!
Kaitlin'smom replied: I have not stared a college fund but she does have a savings account, that I put money into regulary, as well as any money she gets for Holidays or birthdays. I was told my MIL not to worry about her colledge that they would set something up with her inharrience but I still am going to plan some for her, and hope she can get scholarships to help pay for it, DH and I both agree we will help pay for it.
A&A'smommy replied: my dh gets a grent to go to school (a really big grant too!).
booey2 replied: Good for him, up here in Canada the gov. use to give grant $$ to students in need but they had stopped that up here.
A&A'smommy replied: Ugh that sucks! I'm sorry I forgot you live in Canada *slaps self on the forhead*
kimberley replied: i have RESP's for the boys but haven't started one yet for Jade. we are still playing catch up on bills because Jamie was out of work so long, it is just not in the budget right now
megsmommie replied: Ugh, no I haven't even thought of college for the kids, BUT I sign up on Monday for ME to start college!!! Yeah I know a little late in the game, but I'm finally going!!! Yahoooooooooo I guess I should start thinking about the kids though.
coasterqueen replied: Well my parents kinda nudged us into starting something for Kylie. We had a savings account for her, but that's about it until my parents stepped in, lol. Her 1st Christmas they gave us a check for $600 to be put into a college savings plan for her and then this past Christmas, her second one, they gave us a check for $700 for the same thing
I was so shocked both times because my parents and I have not really ever had a good relationship and they didn't help pay for my college. I guess they were making up for *what was*, kind of.
So we have a college investment plan set up for her that has that money plus we are putting in 1/2 of what we were advised to put in because we couldn't afford the full amount.
We are also using upromise.com to help. It probably won't buy more than a few books by the time she is ready, but it's something.
mummy2girls replied: yes we have started a savings account for her....there is a couple thousand in there and that is pretty shocking..not sure how we pulled it off so far
CantWait replied: I have a Registered Education Savings plan set up for both kids. They'll get about $2500 a year for school out of that. I also have a bank account set up that they can put towards school or something else that's usefull when they move out.
aspenblue1 replied: We have a 529 plan set up for Isabella
MomToJade&Jordan replied: We haven't started one yet and we aren't really sure if we are going to. My Mom got her a savings bond for her 1st birthday and I think she is going to do that for every birthday. I had to apply for financial aid to go to school and that might be the route that Jade is going to have to take. She is a military brat though and she might decide to enlist so that she can have her college paid for. I will help her when she is in college if she needs some money, that is what my parents did for us. Then she might not even want to go to college. It's just too far ahead in the future for me.
mckayleesmom replied: Dh says that if Mckaylee wants to go to college..she better inlist in the service...LMAO...seriously though...we really want to put money away for her and I will probably do that once I go back to work and we have extra money. We are on a tight military budget...its hard to save anything.
MilMunchMOM replied: We set up savings for all three and anytime they get $$ for thier B'days or holidays that is where it goes. They like to do it. They always get too many gifts anyway. My house looks like a toys-r-us. Our family's are very good to us. I hope I don't sound ungrateful because we certainly appreciate all they do for the kids.
