books?
PrairieMom wrote: I need some help finding age appropriate skill appropriate books for Ben. He is reading chapter books, at about 3rd grade level. most of the books that are at that level that I have found have material or language that I am not really comfortable with him reading right now. Like the wimpy kid books. He got one for easter, and read through it in a single afternoon, and LOVED it. He has been carrying it around all day reading it, and I am not impressed with some of the stuff in it. He has read all the magic tree house books, and almost all the junie b books. Any suggestions?
Nina J replied: Do you mean the Enid Blyton books? Maybe he'd like the Wishing Chair books?
What about:
Charlotte's Web Little House on the Prairie series? Roald Dahl books?
MommyToAshley replied: I could recommmend all kinds of Fairy chapter books, but I am guessing that he probably won't be interested in that kind of stuff. I found that even some of the Ramona books and other books that are supposed to be age appropriate for 3rd and 4th graders have stuff in them that is too mature for Ashley. Maybe the librarian could help... we found a few good series for Ashley based on the recommendation of the Children's Librarian. I have a hard time finding books on Ashley's level that have pictures in them. She loves the longer chapter books that take longer than 20 minutes to complete the entire book, but she still likes colorful pictures in the books. Another hard mis-match for their reading level.
PrairieMom replied: Thats the problem. I can find all kinds of girley books that would be ok, but is seems like all the boy stuff is violent, dark, or to mature.
He won't go near the little house books, I never thought of the Dahl books tho. He might like those. The problem is getting him interested in them. He won't take my suggestions, he has to think of them himself.
mom21kid2dogs replied: How about the books based on movies he likes. We read Hotel For Dogs a year or so ago and were shocked at the differences between the book & the movie. It was fun to work on not only an appropriate reading levels but also on compare & contrast skills. Ever since then she loves to read the books of the movies she's seen. Do you get Scholastic from school. Those are helpful as to reading level and appropriate content. O liked the Avatar series, Hardy Boys, Geronimo Stilton, and Cam Jansen. Some of it we read together (like James and the Giant Peach) if I thought it might be scary or too intense for her.
bluebear replied: The Something Queer books. Something Queer in the Cafeteria, etc..
amymom replied: Tara --- here is a resource I find useful, it lists reviews on books by grade and by genre. Should be enough there to choose from. But your local librarian and school librarian will be good resources as well.
book reviews for kids
coasterqueen replied: Sorry, besides the ones you have already mentioned Kylie reads some fairy books and the American Girl chapter books and some horse series. I didn't know how the wimpy kid books were. I tried to get Kylie to see if she'd be interested in it and she said she had no interest in them.
mckayleesmom replied: A while back I bought Mckaylee The Black Stallion, Little House On The Prairie and Tom And Huck...
They were kids versions of the books and and didn't have any of the adult themed stuff in them.
coasterqueen replied: Ooh that reminded me - Kylie has the Frog and Toad books - I remember those from when I was younger. Kylie hasn't read them yet, but I liked them.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: I liked those, too. And The Wind in the Willows.
Tara, if you just go to www.christianbook.com and look for kids fiction you might find some good choices. I've been buying from christian book distributors for years, and my mom bought stuff from them when I was a kid. They usually have pretty good prices and a good selection of books and music that you know will have nothing inappropriate in them. Just go to Christianbook.com, then click on Kids, and then bookstore... you can search in your kids age group. I just did a quick search there and found a few things that I read as a kid and some new stuff I've never heard of. I also found out that a book that I really liked when I was a kid was part of a whole series and I never knew it! I might have to buy the whole series for Andrew to read in a few years. This is the series ~ the book I read was Ivan and the Hidden Bible.
bluebear replied: Thought of another - Henry & Mudge
