blue lips
BabyOwen427 wrote: I started when he was around 2 months old bathing him every night. It settles him down for then night and he loves to play in the water. But a few nights ago I noticed his lips, the area around the nose and eyes, all turned a light purplish/blue. He didn't act cold, and I don't have the celing fan running. Fast forward to last night, I filled his baby tub, I have a baby thermometer in it to measure the temp and it was on the warm side of the scale. I have to use the thermometer because I take scalding showers, and his water feels cold to me. Anyways, he was giggling looking foreward to bathing, but not even a minute after he was in the water he started screaming blood murder. I checked the temp, it was fine, so I washed winky and stinky and quickly got him out of there, but he kept screaming while I dried him off, and put him in his sleeper. It was several more minutes until I got him settled down. And his face had turned the blue color while I was dressing him. Should I stop bathing him every night, he loves his baths, and they usually relax him to sleep good. I dunno, last night was awful. And today he has been increadibly fussy, wanting to be held all day, and ear piercing screaming if I put him down. What do I do?
PrairieMom replied: I would talk to your Ped. about it. Does he turn blue anyother time, like if he gets really mad and is screaming, but isn't cold?

jcc64 replied: I would take him in asap. Sometimes blue lips can be a symptom of issues with circulation or the heart. He shouldn't be turning blue after/during a bath. Probably nothing serious, but I would let a dr tell you that. Good luck.
BabyOwen427 replied: I've been thinking of calling the ped for a while now. He needs to go in for his well baby check up anyways, but I am leary of immunizations, and I know the doc is going to want to do them, and I am not sure right now. I want to do some more research into the shots. I think I will call the ped though, just to discuss his coloring and shots.
By the way, I love your quote (jcc64) that is a great life motto.
mckayleesmom replied: I agree with Jeanie...I think it sounds like a circulation problem and you don't want to leave that unchecked.
redchief replied: Make an appointment with his pediatrician. No doubt in my mind that's the right thing to do.
holley79 replied: I'm with everyone else. I would take him in. It may be nothing but always better to be safe then sorry. Annika has never had a bluing issue during bathtime and there have been a few times her water has been on the cool side. She likes it so I don't mind.
coasterqueen replied: Megan had/has the very same thing. They can't seem to explain it except to say that if she starts acting abnormal while she's blue then we need to take her in immediately. Our Ped thinks Megan holds her breath sometimes and is something those who have seizure activity do. Epilepsy runs in my family. So we are keeping an eye on it for now, but to tell you the truth we haven't seen it in a month or so. It's weird, Megan's comes and goes.
BabyOwen427 replied: When he was 2 months old, I checked with the ped's office about getting him in for his well baby check up, they said they were understaffed and weren't doing well baby checks until August. So, the other day I called again. They said the first they could take him is Sept. So we have an appt for Sept 7, for his 2 month well baby check, and he'll be 4 months! I live in a rural part of Oklahoma so finding a new doc is next to impossible, however if I feel something is not right and he needs a doc immmediately I will not hesitate to make the drive to OKC. I have developed a new method of drying him off after his bath, it keeps him warm, and less blue. And untll my appt I'll just keep an extra good eye on him. I'll try to post back in Sept after we see the doc, and let you know what she thinks. Thanks for your concern.

BabyOwen427 replied: well, I suppose I should of updated on this sooner. The ped said his face turns blueish because the skin is thinner there. And that I should pay attention to the 'fatter' parts of him (cheeks, arms, legs) and if they get blue then there is a problem. Next week he'll be 5 months, and I think that in the last couple of weeks he's gotten bigger and I haven't noticed the blueing so much. thanks for your concern.
redchief replied: Thanks for the updates. I'm glad there seems to be no problem!
