I have had a amnio with jenna at 17 weeks.....This was my experience
Don't go alone! I went with aron and I am so glad he came because i was a wreck!I had to have an amnio because with one of my blood tests(afp) it showed a rsik for my baby having spina bifada.
First they did a level 2 ultrasound. That took a while because they were trying to get the baby to stay on its tummy so they look at the spine. But she was too wiggly and wouldnt co-operate. 3 different perinatoligists(sp?) did the u/s. And the most experienced one agreed with the other 2 in which they could not be 100 percent sure she didnt have it. So they asked if we wanted to do the amnio. Both me and aron agreed before going that if they werent 100 percent sure we would do the amnio.
You have to be very still for this because one little movement can move the needle and baby and get something they shouldnt. They put numbing stuff on your belly and then they look at the u/s screen to deternime where to put the needle. They have you put your hands up crossed near your neck. So aron couldnt hold my hand but he did put his hand on my arms for comfort. Then they warn you before they prick you. It feels like a strong pinch that lasts a minute. It hurts at first but once the needle is in its just a uncomfortable feeling .Then they order you to take it easy for the next couple of days. No heavy lifting and such! And the area where the needle was poked in is very tender for quite some time. And I did have cramping feelings after the amnio for a few days... like a mild menstral cramping. And the tests results take about 2 weeks to come in.
I dont want to scare you but amnios do have a risk of causing m/c. I was scared to take the tests because of that fact but i wanted to know how healthy the baby was what i would do if it came back pos for spina bifada. Alot of women opt not to do it because of that so thats a persoanl descion you need to make.
Jamison'smama replied: So very glad things are going so well. Sorry, can't be of help about the amnio--I declined it. Didn't get the ultrasound either since it is only 50 percent accurate and if they see something they would have wanted to do an amnio anyway---
Hang in there, I'm very happy for you!

loveydad replied: Sorry I know this isn't my little area , but I was just reading something (again not to scare you, just think you should know) that says the chances of having a miscarriage from an amniocintis ( CANNOT SPELL that word) is about the same as having a child with the things they check for at over..I think 35 years. So it's probably a good idea.
Ps: I know you've been wanting a baby for al ong time! Congratulations.
