at what age...?

boyohboyohboy wrote: do you start working on taking the bottle away?
and how do you start?
I never had to do that with the others....since they were BF.

gr33n3y3z replied: At I guess it was around 8 to 9 months old the kids all drank from a sippy cup
on their own I just worked with them thats what they got when they ate food a sippy cup and you just show them what to do with it and then they will get the idea

Good luck and dont give up

PrairieMom replied: The bottle was gone for both of mine at a year, same with the passy. I just did everything cold turkey.

AlexsPajamaMama replied: I think he was 10mons old. We did it cold turkey.
Every morning he would get a bottle when we got up and one day he got a sippy cup instead and it was bye bye bottle from there.

boyohboyohboy replied: so you just took the bottle away, and they knew how to drink from the sippy?
because we have been giving andrew a sippy for a few months now but he just chews it doesnt suck..
maybe i should take the stopper out?

I was afraid if i took the bottle away cold turkey and he didnt know how to suck, he wasnt going to get much to drink..
he will be 11 months old, and i do want the bottle gone at one yr. we dont use passys.

i thought about putting water in the bottle and the milk in the sippy..

and also we want to be off the formula at one..so i thought about starting to dilute the formula with soy milk..did you do that too?

lisar replied: I took the bottle away from Lexi on her first birthday. No warning I just took it. She did fine.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I BF both boys, but Wil took a bottle of expressed milk, then a little formula towards the end, so we definitely used bottles. Wes BF exclusively, no bottle ever. I think it was about 12 months when I switched to a sippy cup. Which is when I switched to whole milk. I gradually did half formula half milk so that he got used to the taste. Yes, and then just water in the bottle. Wil used to gum the sippy too, but it just took some time and practice. Just keep offering it. I went cold turkey with the pacis on Wil, but not the bottle because of what you said. Thought he wouldn't drink otherwise. Just keep trying, he'll get it. I didn't take the valve out btw, just try different sippies.

ETA: I think the sippies that worked for Wil were the Avent bottles that you convert into a sippy. Also the Nuby brand, the one with a very soft nose. The harder, shorter spouts didn't work for awhile.

Boo&BugsMom replied: Before the boys were one the bottle was taken away. I introduced the sippy to both before then so they knew how to take the sippy before the bottle was taken away. If not though, if they are thirsty enough they will find a way to take an alternative.

Stacy, you can try a Nuby sippy cup if you haven't already. It is the only sippy cup that Aiden will still take because it has a soft silicone spout, similar to a bottle. It doesn't bother me because ultimately the silicone spout is better orthodontically than a hard spout anyways.

boyohboyohboy replied: jennie, do you know off hand if the nuby sippy is one of those that is now BPA FREE? I have been trying to get anything new that is, not really replacing what we have since this is our last baby....but not trying to buy it either.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Sure is!!! thumb.gif Actually, they claim they never had the PBA in it. They are also very inexpensive!!! thumb.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: thank you! I am going to look for them tomorrow!

moped replied: Gosh I am a bad bad mom - Jack was 20 months when I finally took away that bedtime bottle.......it was me that enjoyed it sleep.gif

stella6979 replied:
Same here.

boyohboyohboy replied:
You are not a bad mom, I see tons of people who let their kids have their bottles later on...
now my neighbor goes over board I think, with a three year old with a passy!!

Jen I wish I could borrow you for a week to make my kids sleep!!!
every night I am sitting there rocking them exhausted thinking about you because you know what to do.!!!

Calimama replied: I took it away at a year. She had been practicing with sippy's at lunch time for a month or so. I'm not sure she even noticed.

moped replied:
Its nice someone thinks of me....it was work and commitment but oh so worth it! Both my kids are great sleepers....... biggrin.gif

I wish all children were good sleepers because I know how hard it can be for parents

My3LilMonkeys replied: Brooke's was phased out around 12 months or so. She started using a sippy cup around 10 months so we gradually started replacing bottles with cups.

Madison was easier because she wanted to be just like Brooke. I think she stopped taking a bottle at 11 months - she always wanted the cup because Brooke had one.
