anyone with pet allergies?

I know this is going to sound awful but tonight i went outside to check on caleb who was playing with the neighborhood boy, and i found his mom and her 2 yr old in the garage, she was trying to get him out of the toys in there,,and we started talking..well then her son brings in this rat looking thing to show me, and here it was a hamster they had gotten that day..apparently she went to get a turtle from some lady down the street and when she picked it up the woman asked her if she wanted these two hampsters. well she said yes and took them home..when she got them home she noticed once opening the cage that there was an awful rotting smell in the cage, and she picked up the hampster and noticed it had a huge hole in its belly. it stunk and was rotting, it wasnt dead, she said she tried to put a bandage on it, but it wasnt helping so she ended up killing it..it had a brother, which is the hampster that the boy brought for us to see, caleb had already touched it before i saw it..the thing had no eye balls, and its hair was falling out, it looked like it had been radiated, it looked awful it couldnt walk, well jake picks it up..i wanted to run inside and clean my kids..but i didnt want to offend her, although i told her she needs to kill this one and put it out of its misery. so now my issue, jake went to bed and now is throwing up horribly, he also has the red bumps and swollen eyes like he gets when he is having an allergic reaction to food. i did bring him in and bath both the kids, but could he be allergic to the hampster? do people who are several sick from animals throw up or just itch and have respitory issues? He is just throwing up and throwing up and is so swollen like he gets.
i am waiting to give him benedryl until he stops throwing up and can keep it down...
MommyToAshley replied: I am allergic to cats... my eyes swell up and get watery, and I get sinus issues if I am around cats. But, I have never thrown up from it. I am not saying it is not possible, but I have never heard of it. My only concern is that I would be worried that hte hampsters had something else wrong with them.
luvbug00 replied: The dander is what people with allergies are allergic to. ALL animals have dander..even humans. There is NO SUCH thing as a HYPOALLERGENIC PET when it comes to cats, dogs, hampster, gerbals, guinnie pigs, rabbits and birds...BTW birds are the WORST. I would make sure he is bathed and not touch those animals again. Also i would Take him to his ped about the sickness those critters had. Kinda gross they were kept that way, and Sad. Mya has animal allergies but her's aren't that severe.
wanted to add the order that i was told ..from worst to best..
Birds, cats, dogs, then the small rodents ( only because their dander kicks up when they move arround their woodchips and such, also a higher chance of mold spores then too so if that is an allergy concern it can make things worse..still not as bad as birds)
Calimama replied: IMO that doesn't sound normal. I hope he's okay. I def. wouldn't let him touch those again.
gr33n3y3z replied: I'm allergic to all pets just about Never made me throw up only food allergies did
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Stacy how is he doing? That sounds really strange for a pet allergy. I hope he's doing better now!
boyohboyohboy replied: I found out that the new neighborhood boy was over that same night, before we were out, playing with Caleb. Even though caleb is aware of what foods Jake isnt to be around he never thought to tell us, because Jake wasnt out. When I started to ask Caleb if anyone had food he then remembered that there had been a boy over who came with a creme filled donut. He had been making a big mess with it. and then he rode Jakes trike. I think it was on his hands and then on the trike and Jake touched it. I think Jake was having an allergic reation to eggs not the half dead hampster. Jakes egg allergy is the only one that can still be so deadly.
This is the first time though that it has happened with egg and just be contact not ingestion. Usually when it touches his lips, before its even ingested he starts violently throwing up.
gr33n3y3z replied: Well I'm glad he is ok now At least you know now the egg allergy isnt so deadly anymore that is a plus
~Roo'sMama~ replied: That's scary! How scary that he got so sick just from touching it! I suppose he could have gotten it on his hands and then put his hands in his mouth or something, but even then it would have been such a small amount. Can you talk to the new neighbors and ask that their son not bring food over? Just think if Jake had been outside when he came over... would he or Caleb even make the connection that a creme filled doughnut has egg in it? I don't know if I would have... but then maybe if I was used to paying attention to stuff like that I would. Anyways that scary, scary, scary! I'm glad he's ok!
boyohboyohboy replied: sara, caleb is in tune to what Jake is allergic to, and does know about donuts because caleb loves donuts and he used to want Jake to eat one too, so he learned that early.. caleb is really careful with Jake and his food allergies, because he has seen him get so sick.
you would be so surprised how small of a food protein he needs to get sick.. with the egg, it usually is a food that he touches to his lips and doesnt even eat it, and he is violently sick.. this is now our one we have to be concerned with and carry the epi pen for.. it is deadly to him.. but the peanut was also, and by a miracle he has out grown it...we are hopeful.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Ahh ok. It sounds like he is a great big brother.
I am just amazed at how small of an amount it takes. I hope he grows out of like he did his nut allergy!
coasterqueen replied: Same here.
boyohboyohboy replied: Jake actually had another reaction just similiar to this about two nights later, and we definately narrowed it down to the toys that are outside that the boy with the donut played with. we got them all washed and he has been fine since.. although my kids will not go near that hampster again, the neighbor still has it and lets her kids play with it, and they are not sick yet, so I guess its just dying but not of disease, I think it was abused before she got it..
