another newbie - I'll be here often !

I was a single mom for about 4 yrs or so and the only advice I can give you is to cherish the times you do have with your children and take it one day at a time.

I'm not officially a single parent, but my DH is gone for a month at a time. You just do the best you can, don't beat yourself up, and enjoy your kids when they're with you.
