allergy forum at i-village - they just don't like me?

DansMom wrote: I'm kind of mystified. I posted there introducing myself yesterday with a question about Daniel's allergy---no responses, and this morning my post wasn't even there anymore. I posted again this morning, making sure I was in the right forum (New members with questions), and nobody responds, even though others have responses to their similar posts and I've responded to one. I realized that I had no info in my profile, so updated that thinking that they might rightly be wary of someone with an empty profile.

It's just odd. This same kind of silence greeted me way back when I posted in the November 2002 playgroup, and that is how I ended up giving up on that site and coming here where people were noticeably more welcoming and interactive. I saw some other posts on the i-village site just now where people welcomed newcomers and said "this is a great group". I wonder if I'm making some kind of technical or social mistake... ? I can't see anything about my post that is troubling, unless maybe my username is similar to one they've had bad experiences with.

I guess this is a situation where I just keep looking elsewhere for a pediatric allergy support group. I'm starting to realize how special this forum is and I'm grateful I found you guys. I don't think there are enough allergic babies/toddlers to have a special forum for that here though.

jcc64 replied: I'm sorry Tracy. I've only been paying sporadic attention to things on the board lately. I've been running back and forth to NJ (200 miles roundtrip), helping to care for my very sick father, and I just don't have time to post and read as I'd like.
What's going on with Daniel? My oldest ds (12) has some pretty hardcore allergies/asthma. We just had an extensive visit with an allergist who put him on an intensive drug regime. Tell me what's going on, maybe I can help.
ITA about this board. Pretty unique and special.

I would try posting in the Chit Chat section.
A CL will usually respond when they get a chance. :-) I didn't see any problems with your post. The Ivillage boards are slower though,
I love this place too. wub.gif

DansMom replied: I'm starting to realize it's just a lot slower over there---I guess I'm just used to the rapid fire, almost conversation like pace of this board LOL!

Jeanne, here is what happened the other day: I've had Daniel on soy milk for quite a while, and he doesn't have any noticeable reaction to soy, but lately as he's getting to like it and drinking more of it, he's got loose stools pretty much all the time (for the last month at least, if not longer). DH thinks it's the soy milk increase. So I bought some rice milk, thinking that's less allergenic. Well, he had a full-blown histamine reaction to it! Looking at the ingredients, the only thing I could see that he's not had before is Safflower oil. I am thinking it's that and not the rice, since he's eaten plenty of rice. I'm going to try a brand that uses something else as the fat content and see if that makes a difference.

I've done a bit of googling on my own in the last two days, and it looks like Safflower oil could trigger an allergic reaction in someone who is allergic to ragweed. If this is so, my poor little guy might have seasonal allergies to deal with on top of the food allergy. One thing that was reassuring in reading through the other posts on the i-village site is seeing how many children with multiple allergies were outgrowing them over time. But this is the first sign that he might have multiple allergies, so I'm kind of bummed. He tolerates egg noodles, but spits out any egg straight, so I haven't gotten any evidence for how he handles egg. I won't give him any peanut butter or peanuts until he's older, but I'm terrified he'll react if/when he does.

We're seeing an allergist on November 5. The docs tend to be progressive here in Ann Arbor, so I'm hoping he/she will be someone I can work with.

Schnoogly replied: *Edited: I'm Sorry, but please do not link to direct competing websites, especially when they do not allow it. If asked, please use a private message to answer the person. Thank You.

MommyToAshley replied: I don't think it is you, I got a pretty cold reception at PP too. I posted a few times in the EC, but didn't get a warm welcome. So, then I only lurked in the playgroup. But, I guess that is a good thing because if that hadn't happened, then Parenting Club may have never been founded and I wouldn't have met all of you!! grouphug.gif

I hope you find a support group that can help with Daniel's allergies, but don't you dare leave here!!! laugh.gif

DansMom replied: Thanks Steph! I'll check out that site.

DansMom replied:
Nope, you're all stuck with me---I'm here to stay!

MomToMany replied: That's why I quit going to Ivillage. No one ever responded to mine, either. They are so clique-ish over there dry.gif .

ETA: I LOVE this place, too!!!

Kirstenmumof3 replied: I quite going to I-village for simmilar reasons. But I am so glad I found this board! I still to this day have no idea who emailed me and gave me the link to this place! thumb.gif

coasterqueen replied: I don't have too many probs on the boards I go to over there. But I did try the April EC board there and got blasted for my breastfeeding views...so I just lurk there when I get really bored here at work. ROFL.

And I agree....NO ONE IS LEAVING THIS BOARD. I'll have to borg-drone.gif you and you won't have a choice but to stay. rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

jcc64 replied: Tracy-
I think it's a good idea to see an allergist. Alec has had allergic tendencies for YEARS, but I just dealt with the regular ped and occasionally picked my brother's brain. He's the one who suggested I see a specialist this summer, and I'm very glad I did. Now I know exactly what he is and isn't allergic to (he has multiple triggers like most kids). I also got state of the art info on the different meds and which were most applicable to Alec's situation.
I really don't have a lot of experience with food allergies. My son Noah had a sensitivity to dairy when he was Daniel's age, and as soon as I cut out it out of his diet, his health improved. We gradually reintroduced it, and now he tolerates it fine. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I'm sorry I don't have much advice on Daniel's allergy, Tracy. I hope you find out something soon. grouphug.gif

As for ivillage, I left there after finding this site. wink.gif The March 04 EC was just way too controversial for my taste. I didn't have a lot of luck with responses, either. I felt as though I were being ignored. unsure.gif

I love it here, too. wub.gif
