Zachary Taylor is Here
dolfinrse wrote: Well, I went in to get induced on Saturday, 4-26, because when we were at the dr. on Friday we were told that Zachary was over 9 lbs. and they didn't want him to get any bigger because he might not fit. We got to the hospital at around 10 am and by 11 I was hooked up to all the monitors and started contracting. The contractions started coming so fast that by 1 pm I couldn't take it anymore and asked for my epidural. When I got the epidural I was only 4 cm. By 4 pm when the dr. checked again I was up to 7 cm. And we waited some more. The dr. came back again around 6 pm and we were up to 9 cm. I began feeling the contractions again by this point so they gave me more of the epidural. At 7 pm I was at 10 cm and as soon as the epidural started wearing off I began pushing. I started pushing around 8:10 and pushed until around 9:20 when he got stuck in my pelvic bone and they had to use the vacuum on his scalp to get him out. When they pulled him out, the cord was around his neck and he was not breathing too well because he had also swallowed the meconium. Within 1 1/2 minutes of him being born they had the team of specialists in my room working on him to get him breathing. As soon as they were able to get him breathing they whisked him away to the NICU, we didn't get to hold him or see him when he was first born. On my way to the Post Partum room we got to stop by the NICU and hold him for 10 minutes. Thank God for those specialists because when he first came out he was so limp. My husband and I didn't know if he was going to make it. His first Apgar score was a 3. They were able to get the second Apgar score up to an 8. After everything was said and done he ended up only weighing 7lbs. 1 oz., so the ultrasound ended up being way off.
Each day he began looking better and better. And today he was able to come home with us.
Time: 9:36PM
Weight: 7lbs. 1 oz.
Length: 21 inches
I will post pics as soon as I can.

He's beautiful! Way to go mommy!! I'm so glad that he's fine now. My US with my third was way off, too, except he was bigger than they thought; he went from 7 1/2 lbs. to being 9 lbs. when he was born!

dolfinrse replied: Thank you to everyone. We had a little tough of a first night. I know that it will get better as he gets used to us and we get used to him. He fusses a lot, but doesn't cry. He just likes to look around and play. The only problem that we have noticed is that he needs to be burped a lot, after 1/2 oz. of formula. And then when he does burp he burps like 3 or 4 times. We are going to the dr. today and we are going to ask if the formula could just be too gasy for him. Right now he is on Similac Advanced with Iron.
MommyToAshley replied: Hi there! Thanks for letting us know how Zachary Taylor is doing! I am typing this with a BIG smile on my face just thinking about you with your new bundle of joy!
Ashley was a gassy baby too, but she was nursed. At least Zachary sounds like a good burper! It's the worst when you can't get them to burp and then they end up with a tummy ache -- no fun! I don't have any experience with formula, but that's a good idea asking Dr if another formula would be less gassy. Just a thought -- Could it also be the bottle? Could he somehow be getting air? Like I said, I have no clue what I am talking about when it comes to formula.
Thanks again for sharing -- I love hearing about Zachary. It sounds like he is really an alert baby.. how fun! Congrats again!!!!

I'm sorry you had such a scare but glad he could come home with you!! Iain had to have a vacuum too and he was less than 7 lbs.
Also, the similac advance with those special lipids does sometimes cause gas--you might need to try the one without the added lipids (regular similac). Iain was really gassy on the enfamil lipil and similac advance--we had to switch to carnation good start (which is cheaper anyway!!!) Also we have had a lot of luck with the Dr. Browns bottles--it's easier for them to suck and they get less air.
Good luck and enjoy your little one!!
