Young Mothers giving birth - Birth Day on TV
jacobsmama wrote: I saw this show today for the first time. It was called Birth Day it is on DHLTH channel (we have dish network). I was wondering what you guy thought..
It said this sho was about young mothers..I was think oh man young girls who are 15,16,17 right??
No...there were saying Young mothers like
"Olivia is 24 and having her first baby at this young age"
Do you think 24 is young? and there was a 22 year old and a 19 year old.
the 19 year old ya I can understand but 22 & 24 is young? I think for some ppl it is because they are immature and dont need to have kids yet.
I had Jacob when I was 23 and now I will be 27.
Do you think that is young? How old were you?
MommyToAshley replied: I think it depends. I know that according to statistics, a lot of women are having children later in life.. having their first child in their 30's due to starting a career first. However, I happen to think that there are a lot more teen pregnancies than there were when I was a teenager. So, I guess it all depends on your reference as to what "young" is. I think 24 is an average age, if you ask me.
stella6979 replied: I had Avery at 27 but if I had met Jeff earlier, I'm sure we would have had kids sooner. I don't think 24 is too young so long as that person is ready. I've met a lot of awesome young Mothers, and I've also met some crappy "older" Mothers, so I don't think age has anything to do with it.
jacobsmama replied: It is just suprising to me that a mother who is 22-25 is called young??
Teen pregnancy is on the rise yes, but that is what it is teen pregnancy. They are talking about "young" mothers.
A&A'smommy replied: wow well if THEY were young then i was REALLY young I was 17 when I got pregnant with Alyssa and I had her a little over a week after I turned 18, I was 22 when I had Autumn!
lisar replied: I was 21 when I had Lexi.
AlexsPajamaMama replied: I was 20 when I had Alex. Logan is due 8 days before I turn 25.
I guess having a baby at the age of 20 is young...depends on the person though Some ppl are still young at 20.
mummy2girls replied: I think it depends on the person. I was 23 with Jordan and i dont know if i was ready. Jenna i was 27. and i was ready ta that age. 22 is young i think BUT again it depends on the person. Some moms on here were very young when they had thioer first child and they are very mature and was ready but then there are woman out there the same age and they are not ready.
AlexsPajamaMama replied: My sil just had her second baby today and she is 21. She is some one I could consider a young mother just because of the way she acts. She is on the younger side maturity wise. JMO.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: No I don't think they deserve the title of 'young mothers' in the too young sense...maybe young as in younger than ME!
I was 23 with Taylor and will be 31 when this baby is born
luvbug00 replied: I was 17 at preg and 18 at birth and in my plans that was late! lol! i think it is just everyones individual opinion.
paradisemommy replied: i think i got you all beat..i had my first when i was a couple months shy of 31 then i had my second when i was a couple months shy of 34..
that is nowhere near "young" in my book (22 to 25)..
MoonMama replied: I was 22 when I had Brae.
I've seen the show before and think the same thing sometimes. But I've also seen 14, 15, 16 year olds on the show before, thats what I think of as a "young mom".
A&A'smommy replied: I didn't realize you were older than me!!
Kirstenmumof3 replied: I was 20 when I had Emily, 22 when I had Spencer and just turned 28 when I had Claudia. I think 20-24 could still be considered young.
jacobsmama replied: hmmmm So awesome how we all think certain things are different..I love it.
I guess I dont think it is young because I had jacob at that age LOL and will have my kids done by the time I am 30...
Swood75 replied: I was 24 when I had Kameron,27 when I had Kyleigh and will be 33 (2 1/2 months shy of 34) when I have Kassidy...
MoonMama replied: Only by a year and a bit.
CantWait replied: I had Robbie when I was 18 and Anthony when I was 26 I believe.
24 really isn't that young as in too young to have a baby, but maybe in the part of the country, world you were watching it, more women tend to have them later in life due to careers etc..
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: I was 21,22&25 when I had my kids and do think that would count as a young mom. It is not saying too young or immature to have kids just young. At katy's school I am definately the exception being in my twenties most of the moms are in the 40 range
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I don't think they mean "too young." But yes, 20's is considered young to me... now that I'm in my 30's. I had Maddie when I was 23. I was young, but again, not "too young." Most of my friends are in their late 30's to early 40's and we have children the same age. A teen mother is a teen mother, a young mother is not a teen mother, she's just young.
Anyway, I don't think it's meant to be derogatory...they are just calling it what it is. Age is not a determining factor for maturity level or parenting skill.

I agree with Aimee on this. I also think the median maternal age varies from region to region here in the States. Perhaps 24 is "young" wherever this show is produced, likely on one of the coasts, where women do tend to delay pg in favor of establishing careers or completing a university education. Here in NY, I was the youngest mother at age 27 in my ds' pre-K class, which really shocked me at the time. Many of the moms were in their late 30's, as I was when I gave birth to Corey. I think in the South and maybe in the heartland, it is more common for younger women to give birth, especially since marriage at a younger age is culturally supported as well.
ZandersMama replied: i was 21 with Zander, and 23 with Zavier, I was young for around here. Although there is alot of teen pregnancy, most "planned" children are had in 30's.
jacobsmama replied: I didn't think they meant it in a degrogetory way either but when you are 22-27 or whatever it is weird to hear them saying "young mothers" I certainly dont feel I am young..lol
msoulz replied: It is certainly all relative! As I was 32 and 39 on my children's birth days, it seems quite young to me.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I was 24 when we had Tanner. No, I don't think it's young IMO. I think it all depends what place in life you are at the time, and it's different for everyone. A friend from our church just gave birth to her first, she is only 20. She got married at 19. I couldn't have seen myself married that young, but she knew she had the man she was suppose to be with and they wanted to start a family right away. Everyone is different.
My2Beauties replied: I was 24 when I had Hanna (had just turned 24) and I didn't feel I was too young, around here that is pretty average, I mean really I was one of the few in my click of friends who hadn't had a kid. I felt a little too old when I was 26 with Aubrey Now that I'm 28 - I keep thinking to myself I'm getting too old to have anymore kids I guess it depends on the person and the region like Jeanne said.
luvmykids replied: I think of 20's as "young" because compared to that, I am old I felt like an old mom when I had the twins at 29, and Macie at 31, and especially in hindsight 24 sounds awfully young to me....not too young to have kids, just young as in not old.
