You will NOT believe what Megan did!
coasterqueen wrote: I was out to lunch with Ryan when we got a call from the school nurse that Megan ATE hand sanitizer. You know the stuff that has 62% alcohol in it. She ate it! Why? I have NO clue. So they stopped the bus, she did it on the bus, had another bus come get her and take her to the bus barn, so the other bus could continue it's route picking up other kids for the PM Pre-K class. They had the nurse check her out and called poison control because none of us have any clue how much she actually ate. It took me 35 minutes to get there since our school is in another town. I get there and they told me if anything terrible was going to happen it would happen w/in an hour. Well it would take me another 35 minutes to get her to the doctor or hospital so I took her to her sitter. She looked fine, not drunk, but they said even a little tiny amount can put them at the legal limit for drunk. So the sitter is watching her closely and I'm STILL waiting for the doctor to get back to me as to whether I should bring her in. Poison control said to give her juice and a snack, but the school nurse couldn't get her to do that. So my sitter and I got her to do that, thankfully. OMG, my child is legally drunk.
So warning if you give your children those little bottles of hand sanitizer to clip to their school bags. I'm totally against hand sanitizer, but the girls begged to have the clip kind on their bags, so I did - stupid mistake. Although how on earth would I think my 4.5 year old child would EAT it.
I feel like the worst mother in the world right now. Just got a call back from our doctor and he said that stuff is lethal to kids, but since nothing had happened in an hours time she will be fine just continue to flush fluids through her so the alcohol gets out of her system.
ANYONE with this stuff for the kids, especially young kids being around, BEWARE!
MommyToAshley replied: OMG- how scary! I'm so glad she is ok.
coasterqueen replied: Yeah, very scary. Although my husband took it so much more calmer than me. The sitter said she was acting fine, but thank god she didn't eat enough for it to be lethal as we do live in a rural area. Ugh, I'm not even going to think about that.
mom21kid2dogs replied: YIKES! Who'd have though she'd eat it!!! Yuck! The smell alone would deter, I would think. Glad she's OK.
My2Beauties replied: OMG I would have been a wreck. I'm so glad that she is ok Karen and wow I would never even think about a child eating it. Thank you for the warning, I will definitely think twice about letting Aubrey use it so freely now.
coasterqueen replied: You'd think, but not my child. I guess I better have a talk with her occupational therapist again about her "oral fixation" problems again.
msoulz replied: IDK about your schools, but our busses seem to be a free-for-all where terrible things happen and no one seems to be in charge. (OK maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration) I am telling you, these kids are awful and the stories I have heard about the middle school and high school busses make me think I will drive my son next year. But I digress ... my point is I wonder if another kid was daring her, or she was being picked on and felt pressured?? Not that it is an excuse but she is young and I have seen older kids talk younger ones into things they should not do.
coasterqueen replied: Nope, not the case at all. She rides a Pre-K only bus to school. Megan has sensory integration issues and some of that are oral fixations, although I thought we were WAY past that since it's been a VERY long long time since we've seen an OF from her, but I guess not . If I knew she still had OF's to things, I would have never let her have hand sanitizer.
Celestrina replied: Do you think the stress of going back to school might have triggered a regression with her OF?
coasterqueen replied: I don't think so. She seems to be fine with school. I honestly have no idea, why.
cameragirl21 replied: Oh, Karen, how scary, I'm glad everything is ok. Megan is an adventure seeker, I know this because I was (still am?) the same way. Just means you have to keep an extra set of eyes on the back of your head if you kwim...it's the reason I'm an only child, my parents only had so many sets of eyes and they were afraid they get another adventurer if they tried for number 2.... What I mean to say, I guess, is that what she did doesn't surprise me...I remember being older than she was when I decided to taste my scented magic markers....
Danalana replied: I'm so glad she was ok!! And also glad you didn't let her drive in that condition
bluebear replied: I've tasted it before, it is very bitter, but it could've been out of curiousity.
How did they know she ate it? Was she sitting in the front seat?
BAC'sMom replied: Glad she is doing ok
MoonMama replied: OMG Karen how scary! I'm so glad she is ok.
You know I have that kids all natural hand sanitizer that swears up and down its safe for kids, and I'm now wondering how safe that really is.
mom21kid2dogs replied: Karen, my friend's daughter is the same way. Always been orally fixated. At a football game 2 years ago (she was 7~almost 8) we bought those glow sticks for the girls. Olivia has played with them sine she was 3 or 4 with no problem. My friend's daughter bit the end of it off. The liquid inside is toxic. We spent the rest of the game in the local ER. I think there's just an impulsivity thing that kicks in with that and *bam* they drink hand sanitizer or glow sticks.
ETA I guess the blessing in dusguise is that it was this week and not while you were on your cruise!
boyohboyohboy replied: Karen, I am so glad she is ok.. maybe she wanted to be sure there were no germs for the big trip!
Kentuckychick replied: I'm so glad to hear that she's okay!! And also glad to hear that thankfully someone noticed and stopped her soon enough that she had no worse effects.
My dad sells Purell for his company and we have bottles in the basement. He said it contains around 60% ethyl alcohol, which is not just alcohol, so that is why it can be a lot more dangerous if consumed.
I looked it up online and it said that it would only take a few swallows for the effects to start to show in a healthy 2 year old.
I didn't know that... so I know I learned a lesson today too. I won't be encouraging the amount of purell use at work anymore. I tell ya though, having a dad that sells it... I really don't use it. I wash wash wash my hands.
A&A'smommy replied: don't feel too bad I drank perfume when I was nearly 3 mom and dad said I was drunk and I was acting it
That is scary, I'm not sure that I would have ever thought about a child eating it but I honestly think it could have been curiosity because it sounds like something Alyssa would have done at or around that age (not now though) I'm glad she is ok!!!
coasterqueen replied: Thanks everyone. She is 100% today. Needless to say my child became the poster child for what not to do at school. The teacher called last night to check on her and said the whole school did a "what not to do and why" about hand sanitizer. Made me even more embarassed.
And whoever asked about the all natural. I have all natural hand sanitizer that my mom got me and it still has the same amount of alcohol. The only difference is the other "scented" ingredients in it -- those are more natural. So it's still NOT safe.
Celestrina replied: I am glad to hear she's ok. Have you been able to talk to her OT to get an idea as to why she did this?
Edit: I just realized, I hope my sig isn't inappropriate for this thread
coasterqueen replied: No, unfortunately not. She's hard to get ahold of as she has appointments every hour of the day except lunch. I just figured I'd wait until we see her when we get back from our trip. She may just be stressed out about our trip or the fact that she is back in school and she can't suck her thumb while at school. Not sure.
coasterqueen replied: No, your siggy is fine. There is really NO use for hand sanitizer in my eyes....just that the schools push it. I'd be more for outlawing the stuff. It kills all the good germs your body needs to fight the bad.
