Yep - bad things do happen in 3's
My2Beauties wrote: So not only has our basement leaked, our sink hose busted (which we got fixed thank goodness), but last night was our first night in the new house and my dad took a shower last night, well this morning what do ya know, I get up and there is his shower water still sitting in the tub At this point, I just want to laugh. Their diclosures indicated that there was no plumbing problems, ok is it just me or is that not a plumbing problem?? Or does that mean like major plumbing problems like pipes and stuff? Grrr... so hopefully it's just clogged and dad said he's going to take a bucket and get all the water out and go buy some of this drano stuff just for hair clogs that he said works wonders! Let's hope it's not something incredibly expensive, this is the last thing I need! So I had to take my shower this morning standing in my dad's COLD, dirty shower water from last night Not fun!
mckayleesmom replied: Can't you call the realty company and ask them about this......Im sorry, but there seems to be alot of plumbing problems when they said there was none when they sold it to you.
mom2my2cuties replied: i thought it was illegal to sale a house claiming there were no problems of a certain type and turns out there are???
Or is that just immoral now??
coasterqueen replied: I'd be chewing someone's butt out about this if I were you. I know nothing about buying a home so I could be clueless on this, but that is ridiculous! Wasn't your home inspected? That should include plumbing and how it works IMO.
Are you on sewer or septic?
mckayleesmom replied: I know a woman who's house flooded after they bought it....They only lived there like a week and she called the realty company and they covered the cost of fixing it.
CantWait replied: Ya, it's just immoral.....
Did you buy deed insurance LeeAnn, this can help out just in case there are any major repairs in the house that the home inspection should have caught.
I'm sorry, I hope it's just a clog. Our pipes were clogged when we moved in here. There was so much hair it made me want to If you have one of those push button drain stoppers, it tends to clog a lot easier. Try and get a pair of tweezers and see if you can pull anything out.
luvmykids replied: Did you get a copy of the inspection? I would call the inspector and just ask some questions, like what exactly was covered. Although if it's just a clogged drain, it's bound to happen but that way you have an idea of what exactly is and isn't checked. Sorry you're having so much trouble!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Drano isn't going to work. It also ruins the pipes. You need to get a plumber to come in and snake it out. It shouldn't cost too much money and this is really the only way to get it cleaned out. I'd turn it in to the home warranty and get them to cover the cost since they signed off on the plumbing.
I wish I lived near you we have our own snake (don't know the real name for it )
So sorry, LeaAnn. Owning a home really sucks at times.
My2Beauties replied: Yes I have every piece of paper that was ever given to me or written on this house, so I'm going to check everything. I am going to email my realtor this morning to see if the inspection includes checking things like this. I mean if we hadn't taken a shower until last night and nothing and I mean nothing has been put down in the tub (the bathroom is actually the one room that didn't need painting or anywork done to it, so no one has been in there except to use the restroom) so it had to have done that prior to them leaving. I mean what are the odds that it just decided to clog first shower we took there?? Really I mean if the Drano doesn't work and this continues to go on and it keeps clogging up on us, then I'm telling my realtor that I will say something and I want them to pay for a plumber. The odd thing is they had a plumber come out because there was a centing issue with the hot water heater, there was a bird's nest or something in it making it not vent properly, I don't know everything but anyways, I mean wouldn't he have checked all that stuff out?? I hope this is it, I can't take anymore "water" issues. Poor DH had to go over to the old house to take his shower this morning because the water is so high in the tub.
My2Beauties replied: We're on city sewer, so no septic tank
My2Beauties replied: We didn't get a home warranty so the buyer is really responsible for many of the things they put in the disclosures. They had to pay so much for our 3% down and the closing costs that we didn't ask for a home warranty - I wish we would have. I read somewhere also that baking soda and vinegar will just dissolve hair and works wonders on clogs??
Kaitlin'smom replied: I am sorry, homeownership does suck sometimes. I have had my share of 'water' problmes in my home as well. You did make sure the plug is not down or how ever its used for a bath right? I hope its something simple I agree stay away from draino, see if its coverd and get a plummer there, and while he is there have him check things over.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Baking soda and vinegar does work, but it sounds like the clog is further down for it to clog that bad and the baking soda/vinegar can't touch it. That is a good thing to use on a regular basis to keep clogs under control. Trust me, I've been there. It needs a snake. The snake (I think ours goes to 500 feet) will get all the way thru the pipe and clean it out.
coasterqueen replied: We call it an "EEL", but Ed probably knows the proper term for it over me.
TheOaf66 replied: in my experience with drains (I've had many) that Drano and whatever else won't do anything. Use a plunger. Get a little pool of water by the drain and plunge the you know what out of it but be prepared for what comes up.
redchief replied: At the risk of being unprofessional, there is one of four reasons your tub isn't draining. The first one is simple; remove the wookie (my son's g/f's description of a hair clog). You have to take the strainer off and look into the drain. If there's hair draped over the bar(s) inside, remove it and your drain will work like new. If you have the style that has a flat disc that rides up and down, it's a little bit more complicated. Let me know if that's the type you have.
It could also be that the drain pipe is scaled. This only happens with older homes that have steel or cast iron drain piping. That will be a little more difficult to handle, especially if the tub is above the ground floor. That will have to be augered (the proper name for a drain snake) to clear the blockage.
The last possibility that comes to mind is improper pitch on the drain pipe. That could be a chronic problem, but is unusual.
Lye, the active ingredient in Drano and other drain cleaning products, is rarely successful in removing bath clogs. You would do better to buy yourself a good, stiff, flat bottomed plunger. Again, remove the strainer and any debris you can see, fill the tub to about 1.5" to 2" with hot water, wet a washcloth and hold it tightly around the trip lever (the part that moves the stopper up and down), then work the plunger liberally up and down over the drain (if you get a lot of black sludge, that's your problem). Keep working the plunger until the drain moves off well.
The last problem could be the "stopper" assembly is improperly adjusted. Adjust this by removing the screws from the trip lever and pulling the assembly out. You will see threaded adjustments that set the assembly in position in the waste. Good luck.
My2Beauties replied: Well too late to stop the Drano, dad had already drained the tub by hand and put the Drano down in there. I contacted my realtor and she called the seller's realtor who stated due to the flood issues I need to contact the Metropolitan Sewer District to find out if there is an issue with the drainage there. So of course their phone # is busy busy busy, so I did a request online and they said they will email me with the status, yeah I'm sure that'll take FOREVER being that here we are 2 days after all kinds of flash floods are going on. My realtor did say the home inspector ran the water in the tub for 20 minutes in every drain actually to ensure that they did not back up and were draining properly. So she said either it is an MSD issue (Metro Sewer District) OR they did something between the inspection and them moving that caused the drain to clog She said if MSD says nothing is wrong on their end, the seller will have to fix it! That's good to know.
