Yard sale questions

moped wrote: This May will be the first i have done but I am determined to get rid of stuff. I have NO CLUE how to price anything. FO rexample:

BRAND NEW baby shoes, some really nice, some were 10-15 brand new. Still on the little hanger thing.

Step 2 Train Table - 2 yeard old, not used for the last year

The tricycle they ride and you push with the tall handle - Radio Flyer

Jacks first bike with traning wheels - I think was about $50 new, he hardly rode it because it was just too small for him

Baby clothes with tag on - so if the tag says $29.99 what should I try to sell it for.

Is there a rule of thumb that if I paid $10 brand new for something that you would price it at 80% off or something?

Any advice would be great!

MommyToAshley replied: I price the really nice, name brand stuff at 1/3 the original price (this is the things that have been worn, not the stuff with tags still on it).

The stuff with tags, I would try to take back to the store, you'll get the most money that way. Even if you dont' have the receipt, most will give you instore credit and then you could use the credit to buy spring clothes.

Anything else that is in good condition, I would price at about 10% of the original value. I price this stuff really low because I want to get rid of it.

What I found when we had a garage sale is that people come to buy the cheap stuff. They literally bring quarters around here. So, if the nicer things don't sale, I would save them for Ebay or Craigslist. Or, I donate it because it feels good giving that stuff to someone who normally can't afford it.

DVFlyer replied: Yard/ Garage sale stuff, as Dee mentioned is sold CHEAP. Pants/ shirts etc are like $1 or less. Fancy dresses can be a few $$.

Remember to try Craigslist if you have it in your area.

coasterqueen replied:
Yep! And what I found out when I did one last year is no matter what price you have on there they will barter with you to get it down as far as possible. VERY annoying!!!!

I must have had my kids clothes priced too high because NONE of them sold and they were nice, name brand clothing.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: I think the most I have priced any of my garage sale stuff at is $5, and that's for a really nice name brand complete two or three piece outfit. Otherwise everything is one or two dollars for really nice single pieces, and 25 to 50 cents for regular clothes that are in ok condition but obviously used. wink.gif When I go to a garage sale I look for the stuff that is a dollar or less, but I will occasionally spend 2 or 3 dollars one one outfit or a coat or dress.

luvmykids replied: All I can say is go cheap....otherwise you will do all that work for nothing and still have all your stuff laugh.gif

I had a pair of baby Keds, still in the box, about $20 or more new....had them priced at $5 and nobody wanted them for more than $2. Just to give you an idea tongue.gif

jakesmommy08 replied: my family is the gods of yard sales!! hah ( i dont know if thats good or bad). Just keep in mind the people go to yard sales because they like good deals!!! I would agree taht if something still has the tags, try to take it back to the store. We always priced the "really nice stuff" a little higher then the normal stuff. If you have like name brand jeans (kids) you could do like $2. A lot is gonna depend on the people who come too.......(do they make good money or do they struggle.....) So consider who is in your area .....also another thing we do is.......on the very last day....maybe starting at noon.....we do a 50% of everything sale and post huge signs up. That helps with getting rid of a lot of stuff. and if you have items you dont want to sell that cheap then put them inside.

As far as like the train table, arent those things like $200?.........I think i would price it at maybe like $45 and if someones looking at it tell them price is negotable. Cuz even at $45 thats a heck of a deal if it does cost $200 like im thinkging.......

moped replied:
Good advice -thanks.

And we live in a middle to upper class type of neighborhood....there is money, not much struggling going on there

coasterqueen replied:
You will still find people who will go out of their way to find these upper class neighborhoods to get clothes and still barter to get them cheap.

luvmykids replied:
DEFINITELY! And don't let it suprise you that even people with money aren't willing to spend it on garage sale stuff laugh.gif

moped replied: Oh for sure - I totally expect that!

DVFlyer replied: We have people who drive up in Mercedes' bartering down a $2 pair of pants.

My3LilMonkeys replied: In my area, you have to price it CHEAP or it won't sell. Regular clothes for $1 or so, "play" clothes that are more worn looking for 25 or 50 cents. Dressier outfits or heavier things like coats $2 or $3.

lovemy2 replied: I would say the train table/car table thing or big toys like that to put them on Craigslist or something I find I get more for them - and something like that (my Mom bought Dylan one on your advice!!) I would put $30 on it will go for sure - especially if its in good shape like I am sure it is - I did a big table of clothes = outfits were $2 pants a dollar, shirts $.50 - and then I also did a bag (like a plastic grocery bag for $10 you will surprised how much they can stuff in a bag and make themselves feel good - round #s too - if they have a dollar bill they will buy it but if they have to give you a dollar bill and a quarter forget it!! I live in the same type of neighborhood no one is hurting here but everyone loves a bargain esp one that looks like new!!

moped replied:
Great idea with the grocery bag.....and you are right I should put the train table on craigslist, I told Jack it would be his money anyways.
