Wisdom teeth - Anyone had there's out?
CantWait wrote: I'm getting one out on Thursday because it keeps causing infections in my gum and throat, but I'm really scared and don't know what to expect. Any advice or anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
DblTblDad replied: I have had my wisdom and a couple other teeth pulled. Some doctors will just numb you up really good and pull your tooth with instruments. This is not always as painful as it is discomfortable. I don't think it'll be too bad and he may give you laughing gas. Afterwards, he'll have you keep gauze on the spot, and it'll be sore, but he'll probably give you some pain killers. The way I perfer to have it done was to be put under general ansthesia and they pulled my tooth while I was asleep. I never felt any pain after that tooth was pulled. Good luck, you'll feel better once it's gone.
Insanemomof3 replied: I had all 4 of mine taken out. It was not that bad, but be sure to avoid sucking at all costs. NO STRAWS. It will cause dry sockets, and that HURTS. (I did that.)
Also, try to avoid ONLY eating rainbow sherbert. I will NEVER touch the stuff again because of my teeth experience. LOL I got sick, and let me tell you, that stuff will never be the same.
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I had all 4 out at the same time. Under general anesthesia because they were impacted. The above advice against sucking is good, also, don't try to eat tortilla chips before you are healed up. I learned that the hard way, tore some of my stitches.
mom2tripp replied: Same here, I have to say it wasn't the most enjoyable experience of my life but, you heal fast and never have to think of it again, GOOD LUCK
Hillbilly Housewife replied: DH had his 4 taken out at once - they were impacted, and he needed to have them quartered.... he had only gotten the shots to numb because he doesn`t like the idea of being under if he doesn`t have to.
He said that he felt the tugging, but the worst was the noise. He didn`t really swell up after, said it wasn`t that sore. But he got stitches and Tylenol 3 with codeine - hardly took any.
I went in for one, my dentist asked if I wanted him to remove them all at once - I agreed. I also only got the numbing shot... mine weren`t impacted, they came out really quickly. Didn't take long at all. I didn't really swell up either, but I had a little bit of discoloration on my jaw.
I had tylenol 3 with codeine as well - I used about 1/3 of the prescription, and I still have the rest... why waste a good thing? I didn't have any stitches, and I couldn't help sticking my tongue in my empty spaces all the TIME. It was just a pain int he butt to try to keep food out of there... I got myself one of those little toothbrushes with the bristle pic on the end (your dentist can probably give you one, you are in Alberta after all... ) and picked out the food pieces.
Not to scare you - but a few days after I had my teeth removed, I could feel little pieces of 'hard stuff' in my gum, below the tooth space. I was worried about it, and they were getting a little painful - I went BACK to the dentist, saying that these pieces of tooth had been missed, and they were coming out, and they hurt. The dentist took a quick look, said it was just bone shifting because of the emptiness, not to worry about it, it would be gone in a few days.
They bugged me SO MUCH - I picked and picked at them.... turns out they WERE little slivers of tooth, not bone - I kept them to show my dentist a week later.... he told me that he couldn`t have known without an x-ray of my jawbone. No apology or anything. Then he asked me if I was going to keep my appointment for a cleaning a few months later - uh NO?!
ediep replied: me too,
wasn't a great few days, but It wasn't THAT bad
amynicole21 replied: I went completely under to have mine out and slept most of the next day. It was most painful later when I got dry socket from smoking
Rocky - I also had tooth and bone left in there! Ack!
I got a bunch of Carnation instant breakfast drinks and lived on those for a few days
Boys r us replied: I had all 4 of mine cut out at one time and it was no big deal for me. I didn't have any problems!
Sarah&Mackenzie replied: I had my bottom 2 cut out and it wasn't bad, just not being able to eat sucked.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Me too. Getting them out wasn't so bad - except for getting sick from the anesthesia. And then I couldn't eat anything except mushy stuff for 2 weeks because the pain in my jaw was so bad from my mouth being wide open during the surgery.
kayla's mama replied: Mine were impacted and growing sideways. I was completely under. I'm still numb on one side of my mouth, and that was 3 years ago. It will never come back to normal. Just one of those things I'll have to live with. My dad had the same problem, he's still really numb. That was about 20 years ago.
Anyway, I lived off of banana pudding and frozen yogurt, melted some. I also ate a fair share of ramean noodles, just don't suck'm in
Good Luck, Hope things go well!!!!!
kit_kats_mom replied: I scheduled mine wisdom tooth removal for three days before thanksgiving thinking that there was no way I would pig out. WRONG! I had all 4 pulled while I was numbed and it was easy peasy. I was a little sore the next day but I only took the perscribed meds for that night and the next morning.
dolfinrse replied: I had all 4 done at once too. I was also put under, I didn't want to know what was going on. I do remember the next day where one was cut out of, I thought it was a flap of skin they forgot to cut , so I pulled on it, turns out it was part of the stitches. It didn't matter anyway, the stitch stayed in and they healed just fine.
jcc64 replied: Just had one out last month. It was pretty infected. Had a valium drip- don't remember a thing, but it only took about 10 minutes and as soon as it was over, I was pretty much back to normal. Went to see "War of the Worlds" on the way home. The dr sent me off with a bunch of narcotics, which frankly I was looking forward to taking, but I didn't end up needing them. Practically no pain and a pretty quick recovery. Btw- the numbness someone else was referring to probably was the result of a dr hitting a nerve during the extraction. When the dentist suggested this was a possibility with my bottom wisdom tooth, I elected not to have that one removed.
CantWait replied: Thanks for all your replies. I'm feeling just a little less uneasy now. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.
mummy2girls replied: When i was 18 i had all 4 taken out. 2 was showing but the other 2 they had to cut my guims.... I was sore for a week. and very sensitive to chew. So i lived on soup...LOL. You will be sore for the first few days but you will recover fast.
