Wife Swap.... - a little bit of a vent....
punkeemunkee'smom wrote: I don't know if anyone else is watching this-(I was flipping between Deal or No Deal and the new Wife Swap) and I just had to say that they on WifeSwap always seem to pick homeschool families that are very unorganized or not really doing the work they are supposed to or their house is GROSS! like tonight's family....As a homeschooling mom-it bothers me that they portray the families that have these issues...It makes us all seem you know? On the flip side the Dad of the opposing family is a real ^$$ so I guess everyone has their problems Sorry to whine I have just noticed in the few shows I have seen this seems to be the common thread!
mom2my2cuties replied: I noticed they really never pick 'normal' families for this. And while I know every family has thier issues...they only pick the extremes.
Crystalina replied: I'm watching it and I know what you mean. Although it's sad to say that there are some who homeschool and let their kids slack off all day. I think that they just don't want to have their kids in the real world. I'm saying this for some not for all. I considered homeschooling but I don't have the patience.
C&K*s Mommie replied: I watched a few minutes of that show, before we flipped it over to Finding Nemo to watch. The ones who cast the wives on the show, find some of the most extreme people out there.
Having animal hair stuck to your feet, is not most people choices of a thing they want to encounter after getting out of a clean relaxing shower.
More power to those girls who at 9, 11 & the older one (forgot how old) to have their eyebrows plucked. I am 28, and have never got the nerve to be able to do that myself, or have someone else do it for me.
Getting on restriction for having chipped nails is taking it the ideal of beauty waaaaaayyyyy too far, IMO. Esp in a childs mind.
Crystalina replied: What I don't understand is why these people show their houses on National t.v. if they are that bad. I just wonder if it's all for ratings. Really, wouldn't you clean if you knew that cameras would be in your house?
mom2my2cuties replied: Anymore - I honestly think people just don't care. It's really sad to say, but a lot people have very little respect for themselves anymore. I certainly wouldn't let anyone into my house if it was dirty...I would do some serious cleaning (and probably call in the Domestic Diva's to make sure it was white glove spotless)
luvbug00 replied: Abbie I was Just about to post on this very topic!!!!
I must sadly admit that until I was a teen this show presents is the perception that I had of homeschooled children and their families. Now I am ashamed i let shows like this influance my mind. It's horible homeschool families are judged on what people see on this show. I hope someday somone at ABC realizes how much this hurts real people and it's because of shows like this that don't give the correct potrayal of what really happens and influance the gulible minds of children and carry on this sterotype. It really angers me this show has yet to put a normal homeschooling family on this show and maybe try showing a public school children all messed up. They do exsit.
C&K*s Mommie replied: To counter the misperception that some may have of homeschooled children and their families, I actually believe that if you can be dedicated enough to give your child routine and a schedule to follow very similiar to public school, then I would imagine that most homeschooling parents are dedicated to keeping their houses fairly tidy-- unlike what may have been presented in the past about homeschooling families. That lady tonight, and any other night I have missed, must be an anomaly. I did not see much of the show, as we are watching another movie, but what I did see was that she did not like to clean unless her child was sneezing. I think most homeschooled children and their parents are cleaner than that.
I agree about letting cameras into you home, and not caring enough to pick up before it is aired on national tv. They really must not care, or are doing it for ratings.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: Thank you Nadia and Nicole! Unfortunately these types of shows and the few lazy parents who homeschool as an out, rather than a desire to give their children the best possible education, give homeschooling a bad name overall. We have many reasons we choose homeschooling.
Yeah I think it is just disgusting and I have that same thought every single time I have seen the show...I am thinking HELLO I know they told you they were coming...I am weird about things like the bathroom anyway but holy moly if a TV crew was coming in here This place would be C L E A N!!!
luvmykids replied: Ditto, I have seven cousins (different families) who were home schooled. They are all successful, intelligent, sociable young adults.
I think they just choose the most extreme opposites they can find to add fuel to the drama fire.
Crystalina replied: I know many homeschooled children and they are very very well behaved, clean house (spotless houses really) and they are smart. They are all Meninites. I do not know any children that are homeschooled and are not Meninites. I know they have a differant lifestyle then most of us do but they are the only ones I can compare. I wish I had the dicipline that those mothers have.
mommyofpremitwins replied: If you are going to have your house on tv aren't you going to clean up a little. I would be embarrased to a messy house if I had company over let alone a whole nation watching.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I am assuming that homeschooled children have a big part of family life as well... helpingto cook and clean I mean... Please correct me if I'm wrong, JessyAnn, I know you were homeschooled, and some parents here do it as well - Jennifer, I think you do, right? did you have to learn/teach basic household duties as part of your day as well as educational stuff?
My kids have to tidy up after themselves. By no means is my house spotless, but like Flylady says... Housework done incorectly is still a blessing to your home. I like to think I homeschool without a curriculum.
JP&KJMOM replied: I watched it too and all I can say is that the organized woman might have been a little over the top but uh I would not sleep ANYWHERE that I had fleas crawling on me at all times. The worst part was that the family acted like fleas in the house was no big deal.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Oh, is this the one with the punk rock family? If so, the dad of the other family was a real *&#^$! I felt bad that the punk rock family was labeled as devil worshippers because of their appearance, to be honest.
On the homeschooling topic, I have seen a few families who were portrayed as structured and well behaved homeschoolers. It could be the other show that is similar to Wife Swap though. Rest assure, I have also met many homeschooling families and none of them fit the negative molds portrayed on the show. In a different way I kind of feel your frustration Abbie. As an in-home provider, I am constantly having to keep up my reputation more because of the bad ones that give us good ones a bad image.
gr33n3y3z replied: What bothers me about that show is this
Leave the childrens everyday life events alone including school and after school sports etc.
Jamison'smama replied: There were a couple of them on last night right? Well the pirate family was over the top....however, my DH sent this to me this morning.

mom2my2cuties replied: I am absolutely appalled that that mother had the nerve to condone her children's cursing. It is one thing if your kids repeat something they hear you say when you slip...but to encourage it - jeez And BRAG that they dropped the F-Bomb on national TV...oh that shows good parenting right there.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Ok, I believe I am thinking of a different episode, perhaps. I didn't see the pirate one (that was the new one right), but I did see the previews of it. I thought that was quite "out there". Some of these people seem to need to help of Supernanny as well.
mom2my2cuties replied: Oh I read the link that Jamison'smama posted and where she did a quick write up of her Wife Swap episode.
