When your water breaks - should I buy something?
mysweetpeasWil&Wes wrote: Well since I was induced with Wil, I never experienced my water breaking naturally. So I'm starting to think of those little things that may happen this time and wondering if I should be prepared. I know people say it's only really a trickle when your water breaks, but does anyone think it's important to put something over your mattress to protect it in case it happens while you're sleeping? If so, what do I buy? Or should I just start sleeping on some towels? Our mattress is only a year old, so I would hate to ruin it. Is this just a myth or should I be prepared?
kimberley replied: i never did because my water has never broken unless i was in active labor with the boys and the doc/mw broke it with the girls. it actually came out intact with Kaleigh
moped replied: Well my water broke in the toilet, and I think you would be awake when it happened - but I am not certain. I felt kinda funny and went to the bathroom and it broke and it was way way more than a trickle - it was a waterfall!
luvmykids replied: Mine started out as little dribbles, I kept thinking I was peeing my pants in my sleep! But within about 20 minutes of the dribbles it really really broke and the seat in the car and my clothes were soaked.
I'd say buy a waterproof crib mat just in case, then you can use it later too.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Oh boy...here I thought it was only a trickle...although when the doc broke mine in the hospital, she literally jumped and said "you got me"! Thanks for the advice...I will grab a waterproof pad and maybe start sleeping on it. I'm just thinking...I'll be sleeping on a regular mattress cover, a feather bed cover (DH thinks our bed is too hard), a waterproof cover and a maternity pillow!! And we have a feather duvet for the top! That's a lot of padding...haha!
CosmetologyMommy replied: I too was induced with Aidan and when they broke my water, it was just a little bit, like a trickle. I guess everyone is different but I believe they have rubber sheets.
PrairieMom replied: The majority of the stories I have heard are people that were sleeping and woke up thinking they peed their pants, so I wouldn't think its unreasonable to protect your bed. Maybe I should think about doing the same!
My3LilMonkeys replied: I have no idea when my water broke with Madison. When I went for my appt. it had already broken, but the most I ever got was a little dampness - like when you sneeze and pee a little.
Kaitlin'smom replied: oh no its not a trickle, its more of a gush. Mine broke at home, but thankfull we had just put the plastic over the matress before it happend. I had contraction that am but by the time I got to the hospital they stopped so I was sent home, I was tired so we decided to nap I said sould we put the plastic down just incase, he said ya I guess, thank good ness we did! It broke while I was alseep, the bed was only a bit wet but when I stood up GUSH. I said to DH I think my water broke, he answer are you sure your just not peeing, i said honey you DONT pee like this
my advice 37 week put the plastic down.
ilovemybaby replied: Yeah I put a single bed plastic sheet on my side of our bed. My mum told me that when her waters broke with my sister it completely ruined their mattress. So I wasn't risking it LOL Paul also made me sit on a towel whenever I went in the car I guess she (my mum) lost almost the whole lot at once. Whereas I was induced and my waters broke when I stood up from getting out of bed because I was in heaps of pain. And it was like I wet my pants... just a trickle. And I didn't lose it all. It kept leaking as I was in delivery I think.
EvesMom replied: When i was approaching my due date , I started using mixi pads, in case my membranes ruptured. It did the trick.
luvbug00 replied: My water broke while i was sleeping.. trickle? not for me it was like a river! LOL!
aspenblue1 replied: My water didn't break with either of my girls so I have no clue. They told me you could use a shower curtain also.
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: I was talking about this today with my mom. I am getting one of the vinyl mattress protectors like I have on the kids beds just incase. I too have a brand new mattress that I really like...and have had a few close call sneezes in the last few days
1lilpeanut2love replied: The funny thing is I never knew that my water even broke. I had a big mucous plug and never actually know when mine broke. When I got to the hospital to have Kaylee my doc/ the nurses told me my water had broken, that was news to me. All I basically had looking back on it now was wet underwear, nothing out of the ordinary!
I expected a gush and a mess, but never had any of that!!
ilovemybaby replied: Isn't that sneezing/coughing/jumping/laughing/lifting thing soooooooooooooo annoying! I have that sometimes too. I am usually always wearing a panty liner just in case. We have a brand new bed so I will definitely be covering it before this one is due.
ilovemybaby replied: It could have been that baby was overdue and had less amniotic fluid left in there? I didn't really have that much and Abby was two weeks overdue.
My sister was early and my mum had a ton of it. So I guess that could have something to do with it?
1lilpeanut2love replied: No, she was right on time.
I had Kaylee a day before my expected due date!!
I think everyone is different. Each one of us experiences different things.
asweetnectarwomb replied: Hm...
mine broke just 30 min before delivering.
However, it's better to protect your bed though. We'll nver know what happens.
But...I think, you might feel it when your water breaks. So, you can move out of the bed right after you feel it. As long as you don't jump! it's dangeroussss...
boyohboyohboy replied: I was induced with my second child, they said it would take a while to work, so get dressed and go home, well as soon as I stood up, and DH was tying my shoes, my water broke, and it was a ton of water, just like a water fall! I had always heard it was just a little trickle too! It was terrible, and it just kept coming and coming, and the nurse said that after it breaks, it will keep coming in gushes, becuz it replenishes itself every 3 hours or so! we bought a water proof mattress pad to cover our mattress, because of this reason and also the kids sleep with us, and if they ever had an accident in our bed we wanted to not ruin the new mattress also. they make some nice ones that are cotton on top and then plastic under it so you dont even know that they are there, but they sure do heat up the bed!
Kaitlin'smom replied: if your feeling it, to late the be is most likely WET if not SOAKED
mummy2girls replied: With Jordan it broke. I was getting induced and i had went to use the btahroom im sitting on the toilet and then i feel my plug come out.. then i stood up and a puddle appeared on teh floor...LOL...
MyLuvBugs replied: I bought a waterproof bed pad (just in case), and for the car we put a towel in the car that we'd take to the hospital (also just in case). My water had to be broken at 8cm with Lorelei b/c it wouldn't break on it's own. lol Same with my mom when she was PG with me. I think I'd be a little grossed out if it just broke while I was just up and walking around.
My2Beauties replied: Mine didn't break until I was at the hospital about 8 cm dilated, they were about to break it for me then I felt it gush out! But I'd buy one just to be safe, guess I got lucky.
