When is too much...
mummy2girls wrote: milk? Jenna absolutely LOVES milk! And will drink it like its going out of style. Im lucky that she prefers milk over juice and pops but im worried she is takign in too much calcium. Aside from milk she has yogurt during the day... what is the recommended amount?
MyLuvBugs replied: I don't see anything too worry about. I don't think there's a problem taking in lots of calcium. Just be happy that she likes milk and yogurt. I can't stand to drink milk, and have to force myself to eat yogurt. YUCK! She'll be fine.
ediep replied: maybe 3 sippy cups a day is about all I'd give her.....although Jason drinks none so who am I to give advice????
try giving her water too, my ped said thats good for them
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I think they only get one cup at the sitters - otherwise it's juice and water there.
We give about 3 ounces of mik with dinner, in a regular cup, to both kids - and they usually ask for a sippy cup of milk at night - but we don't give it to them - they can have it out of a cup, and it's only about 2 ounces. They can have as much as they want though - they usually come out and ask for milke 2 or 3 times... so in a day, probably 10 to 12 ounces of milk, if they've asked for it a lot, and that includes a few ounces at the sitters.
ammommy replied: My ped always said no more than 32oz per day until Alec turned 3.
luvbug00 replied: Mya was like Jenna, I never knew you could have too much milk!
Lexismama replied: I always take what the docs say with a grain of salt. I honestly think that there is no such thing as too much milk unless obviously they are drinking like gallons and gallons a day LOL. Milk is sooo healthy, i think what they say is really just a guidline.
1moremakes4 replied: My 3 year old loves milk!! I never knew you could give too much milk, but her daycare provider once told me that it can contribute to constipation. I never really pay much attention to how much she's getting, but if she's had several cups already, I'll suggest water or juice instead. After all, variety is the spice of life!!
Kirstenmumof3 replied: That's really good that she prefers milk to juice and pop. Claudia loves pop and I wish she didn't. I just checked and the the recommended serving From the Canada's Food Guide is 2-3 8oz servings a day.
ammommy replied: I think that the reason that my ped gave me a maximum range is that milk is very filling and children could substitute milk for foods that give other nutrients.
moped replied: I agree!
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I agree with this, but as long as Jenna is eating 3 well-balanced meals plus snacks a day, I wouldn't worry too much. My sister says that you actually absorb a lot less calcium than you think from each serving, so you're not actually getting the full amount each time, that's why it's often advised to supplement with calcium supps. This is usually the case for people who don't eat many other dairy products. But I'll ask my sis what the recommended amount is per day and try and get back to you...she's a dietician. And I'll see if going over that is truly harmful.
~~*Missi*~~ replied: according to the american pediatrics website and there book. 16-18ounces a day is more then enough over that is to much.
I posted some links in the milk in a sippy post that have alot of information from the american pediatrics on milk consumption and diary alternatives cause Sabrina hates milk. I am lucky if I get 8-10oz a day in her!
CantWait replied: 24 oz is more then enough according to the Canadian Food Guide, there is such a thing as to much. It's a really good thing that she likes milk though. Maybe try her with the President Choice smoothies as an alternative.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Okay, what do they say happens if you give over this amount? I give Wil at least 24 oz of milk per day and my ped says that's fine. I'm not trying to argue, but I'm not sure I'm understanding what exactly could happen if you give too much. Can someone please explain?
~~*Missi*~~ replied: I think the reason they say to much is the meal replacement. Milk water juice all those are filling and when there tummies are the size of the fist if they are drinking and drinking all day they aren't getting the nutrients and stuff from real food.
That is a generic form of what the AAP says. Basically they dont want you kids to fill on liquids when they should have food.
Back when they were babies and not eating solids they needed lots of formula or BM etc... to get the proper calorie and nutrition but now they should be getting that from food not fluid.
That is how they explain it. Personally if you want to feed your kid 100oz or 10oz its your kid right! I was just post what I was reading since I have the opposite problem with Sabrina. She doesn't like milk and i am lucky if i get 8-10oz in her a day! So i was reading it and posting what the AAP says. the aap has a very good book and its a guideline not a must as all information here is.
(plus there is new research out there saying to much milk can cause osteoperosis and other things so WHO KNOWS! right)....
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Thanks for explaining it!
~~*Missi*~~ replied: Your welcome. Did it make sense LOL!
The AAP site and babycenter.com have great info that I read and then adjust for my chid which i think is important for all us mommas to do. Its a guideline and well I think we know our babies better then anyone!!
(ps you son is SOOOOOO cute i love looking at the siggy)

Jenna is an awesome eater so thats good.. she has breakfast which is usually cereal with milk, a fruit, a small glass of milk and a slice of toast with jam
then yogurt fro snack
then for lunch... usually a sandwich of some kind and soup, or pasta or left overs from the night before and a galss of milk
snack... fruit
supper.... a meat of some kind, potato or rice or pasta and vegtables and a glass of milk
snack before bed is usually a fruit
sometimes she will have a treat in the middle of the day of some kind...
sos she has 3 gallses of milk per day... i just worry when all she prefers is milk milk milk!
mckayleesmom replied: I had the same question a while back..because Mckaylee is just like Jenna. Lately I have been doing half water and half milk in her sippy cup...she hasn't been able to tell the difference and this way she still thinks shes getting what she wants.
