What the heck is going on?

kit_kats_mom wrote: For the last 7-8 years, everytime I start a workout routine, I get a cold within the first few days. That gets me off of my routine then I just quit. For example, about a year ago, I bought a tape to do at home and a bike. I worked out for one day and ended up with a cold which had me out of comission for about a week. Same thing a few years ago, I hadn't worked out for a long time, started and got sick.

I just joined the gym last week and have worked out (lightly...35 mins on the treadmill with my heartrate at 130, and a few machines a day to work myself into it) three times. I had scads of energy Tues-Thurs then yesterday I started feeling crappy in the afternoon. I woke up this morning with a full blown cold.

What is up with that. My DH didn't believe me when I said working out makes me sick. LOL seriously though, has this happened to anyone else?

amynicole21 replied: That's very weird! I have no idea huh.gif

MomToJade&Jordan replied: I guess you are just allergic to working out Cary. laugh.gif No I don't think this has ever happened to me, but it might be your bodies reaction to change.

mammag replied: rolling_smile.gif That happens to me too. DH & I always say we have to be extra careful when we start up again because we always catch something. Maybe when you start a new fitness program it temporarily messes with your immune system??? I get UTI's a lot when I first start working out to.... really weird!

kit_kats_mom replied: Ok, I read up a bit on it online. Seems that the immune system is weakened if you start working out more intensely (working out at all in my case) but strengthened if you maintain a moderate routine. I guess I was pushing myself too hard even though I really was watching my heart rate. Maybe that, coupled with the stress of my new job responsiblities has just run me down. dry.gif

I think that once I start feeling better, I'll start back again with just 20 minutes on the treadmill & add a minute each time until I get up to where I want to be. I feel like I must be even more out of shape than I though. Gosh sad.gif unsure.gif

mammag replied: That would fit with me then because I always say I'm going to start off slow but then I push it. For me it's more with the weights, I try to go to heavy and I probably should start off doing lower weight/higher reps..... well, I'm on a roll this week so we'll see if I end up with something........ OH I hope not!

BTW, hope your cold goes away soon. Are you planning on working out with the cold? I never know whether to go ahead and workout or take a break when I'm sick. I know they say if it is just a snifle your fine to just bring the intensity down but if you have a full blown cold I'd probably let it get better.

kit_kats_mom replied: What I was reading online about working out with a cold was "if it's head stuff, go ahead. it won't hurt but it won't help either. If it's chest congestion, hold off on working out until you feel better."

It feels like it's mostly nasal/head cold but I have been short of breath. I'll probably hold off until Tuesday before I try and cardio. I may sneak in on Monday for a few weights but I'll go really easy. biggrin.gif

jdkjd replied: I think the other thing is being around new people and all of their germs. I'm always a little grossed out by knowing how many other people have sweated on or touched all of the machines in there.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Yep, I always wash my hands after a workout even if I really didn't touch anything. Also, I do think it may be you are starting too strong and then quitting when your body is reacting to the change. Maybe try a steady slower routine and add more vitamin C to your diet. Or echinacea to keep the cold away. Hope you feel better and get back to working out!

coasterqueen replied:
Ugh, I know. This is another reason why I can't go to gyms anymore. It grosses me out too much. puke.gif They are supposed to wipe them down after using them, but I've seen too many people not. puke.gif

Cary -

I wish I coud say I get a cold every time I work out so I didn't have to work out anymore. I just need to get off my butt and actually work out! tongue.gif Hope you feel better soon. grouphug.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied:
I was to Karen but they GYm I go to have disinfectan spray bottles all over so you can clean the equipment off before and after smile.gif

now I just need more time to go sad.gif guess I need to try and get up ealier in the am and get a work out in befor ethe day starts, might be my only time sad.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I'm kind of late on this one, but I do this, too. I always get a head cold (I dont' go to gyms) and if I start doing ab exercises I get so nauseous. If I push myself really hard I will throw up. sad.gif I have to take it really easy. I said something to some friends of mine about it and they acted like I was an alien. laugh.gif I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who does this.
