What is this and why can't I get rid of it? - Computer virus
luvmykids wrote: I have no idea where this came from, I'm super careful about opening attachments, emails, etc. But everytime a page finishes loading, I get this message:
"System Error" Your computer was infected by a dangerous trojan! Note: Your critical files can be lost.
Click OK to download the antimalware application to clean your system! (Recommended)
I've run everything I have and nothing is getting rid of it. Any suggestions?
redchief replied: Looks like a pop-up I've seen before. Have you tried cleaning out your temporary internet folder?
jem0622 replied: Sounds like someone planted something with a cookie so that you will go to their site and download their product (could be shareware or must purchase), or a way to get information from you.
If you can go to www dot download dot com, then you can search and find a spybot to locate all of the junk on your PC.
Also, go to Internet Options, and delete your cookies, temporary internet files, and history.
See if that fixes it.

download and run this program it should get rid of it!!!
Teesa®© replied: For everyone who has ever gotten a popup stating you have a virus: DO NOT EVER CLICK ON IT!!!! You'll just end up with worse things on your puter.
Unless the popup is from AVG or whatever virus program you use, DON'T CLICK!!!
This link is for My Puter Site. It lists all sorts of FREE programs to help protect and clean your puter. There's brief descriptions of the programs and tutorials on how to update and run each one. I've tried to make it as user-friendly as I could.
Some of the FREE programs listed: Ad-Aware Spybot Search & Destroy AVG Free Edition HijackThis SUPER AntiSpyware and more.
There's also a section [scroll to the very bottom] on Caches and how to clean them from the more popular browsers.
Stuff like this is my passion and I often have puters from family, friends and even DH's co-workers here to fix for them. Feel free to ask me ANYTHING [but I don't why weiners are 12 to a pack and hotdog buns are only 10 to a pack ]
luvmykids replied: Thanks for all the info but this is really the burning question
Teesa®© replied: You're very welcome
Ummm.... maybe they do it for the people who BBQ them and they drop one or two wieners?? Or burn them?? Or the dog steals them?? Or to munch on while waiting for something else to cook??
luvmykids replied: Ok I am so frustrated...I ran the program Jessica linked, and have run Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spyware Doctor, Stop Sign, Reg-Cure, and a few others I can't think of. The only program that found any threats was AVG, and it said there was an error trying to quarantine or heal them. One is in fact a trojan worm. What else can I do?
I'm scared to use email or do anything on line like pay my bills b/c I don't want to pass this on or give anyone info.
My3LilMonkeys replied: They do it for people like my husband, who like to eat hot dogs straight out of the package, uncooked.

Teesa®© replied: When AVG found it, did you remember what the name was?
Did you remember to update the program's before running them?
luvmykids replied: I don't remember the names, one was trojan banker or something, the other two were qhost or something. I did update all the programs first, and ran them multiple times thinking a definition just wasn't up to date or something.
But what do you know, it was still popping up this morning and now it's not....explain that one
mom21kid2dogs replied: I use AVG and my guess is that it actually did correct the problem even though you got the error message. I had gotten a virus quite a while back and it said it couldn't fix or quarentine it but when I re ran the system scan and the virus (I think it was a worm) was gone. I LOVE AVG! We took our computer in a year ago for a hard drive upgrade and they commented that it was the cleanest computer (virus wise) they'd seen in a long time. We did purchase it after using the free version for several years. It's very good protection.
Teesa®© replied: Some programs, such as AVG and Spybot, can fix the problems, but depending on what and/or where the narstie lays is where the conundrum is.
If the narstie is in your registry, running in the background [especially when it's not listed in your Task Manager and you can't shut it down manually] or pretending to be a system file, [in other words, it's being "used" and therefore can't be deleted] then it can't be totally cleaned from your puter without rebooting.
Spybot and/or AVG [I use these as examples as I know they'll clean on reboot] know where the narstie is when they scan so they'll just prevent it from starting on boot up so they can clean your puter completely.
I hope that makes sense. I understand the process, but to actually put it into words took a lot of thought
