What is the weirdest thing you've ever eaten? - From eating placenta post
My3LilMonkeys wrote: Seeing all the people who said no, they would not eat their placenta made me curious...what is the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?
I have tasted a lot of weird things in my time. Eel, shark, rattlesnake, chitlins, pig's feet, octopus, pig's brain and skunk. Also - probably weird to some people but not to us country folk - rabbit, pheasant and quail were always common foods in hunting season. And one of my favorite foods always has been squirrel.
CosmetologyMommy replied: I am really picky....so nothing out of the ordinary here!
1lilpeanut2love replied: I've eaten rabbit, squirrel, and deer!! Rabbit tastes like chicken. It was good! The others I don't remember the taste!
My SO has eaten Alligator and goat meat!! EWWWH!
Bee_Kay replied: I tried rabbit once and HATED it !!!
Other than that, this one time my DH and I were sucker fishing with his cousin (who is a hardcore outdoorsy type) and we caught one. My dh cousin tossed it on the fire to eat it (didn't fillet it or anything) so I tried a bite. It wasnt too bad, but then again I had a few beers beforehand
Bee_Kay replied: Up here in MN deer (venison) is another food group. Deer hunting is BIGTIME popular up here. It's really good if cooked right.
My3LilMonkeys replied: Yeah - I didn't even include deer on my list because it is very common around here too!
And I've tried alligator too - it was really good!
EvesMom replied: I've tried frogs legs, that's probably the weirdest. I've also had deer(my fav), turtle, pheasant, quail, dove, wood duck, wild boar, buffalo, and bear. I haven't had rabbit yet, and I'm curious to what squirrel is like?(I heard it's stringy)
Bee_Kay replied: I could never eat some of the crap they have had on Fear Factor. OMG!!! Some of that stuff I couldnt imagine consuming. I mean, come on, how the heck to they think that stuff up??
Cece00 replied: The weirdest thing was probably lion.
Ive also had squirrel, nutria, alligator, deer, shark, probably other gamey stuff, too.
Oh, i've had cooked bugs before. YUCK.
1lilpeanut2love replied:
EEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWHHHH!!
EvesMom replied: What does lion taste like?
Bee_Kay replied: Were you in the U.S. when you ate lion? I've never heard of eating lion (at least not here)
Crystalina replied: We fry up any critter that slows down. I have pheasants and quail in the freezer right now. My dh raises them for hunting preserves so we have alot of them.
I lived in a fishing village (Humacao) in Puerto Rico and because fishing was the main thing there we ate many things from the sea. Octopus is the worse because you can chew it forever and never make any progress. The wierdest though would be a conch snail. They boiled it (and it was big) . They shoved his snail body back into his huge shell and put him on my plate. They even used toothpicks to have his little snail eyes sticking up the way they would if he were alive. That was just gross. Again, very chewy and fishy tasting.
My3LilMonkeys replied: Not if it's cooked properly. We dredge it in flour and fry it and its incredibly tender and sooo good.
Although if it's a very old squirrel it can be tough - the younger ones taste better.
Crystalina replied: Oh, let me add that I will fry up any critter but I don't eat them. I just feed it to the family. It keeps dh happy and the kids don't know the differance. I take quail eggs and boil them and Izabella calls them Barbie eggs because they are so small.
luvmykids replied: I've had a buffalo burger, elk, calamari (which I don't think is weird) and grilled squid too. Nothing too weird.
EvesMom replied: LOL!
redchief replied: If you don't mind my asking, what is nutria? I never heard of it.
I've eaten snake, alligator, frog's legs, squid, octopus, snail, conch, all kinds of fish and crabs, buffalo, chitlins, tongue, pheasant, quail, deer (this is weird?), rabbit, horse and bear. As I said before there isn't much I won't try once. There's nothing mentioned so far that I haven't eaten that I wouldn't try. I love food.
luvmykids replied: OK, I'll ask. What does horse taste like? Did you eat it on purpose?
redchief replied: Kind of tastes like a cross between gamey beef and deer. No, I didn't eat it on purpose... It was prepared by a friend's mother when I was a youngster and they didn't tell us until afterward what it was. I didn't believe them for a long time.
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Haggis, in Scotland. I ate some just to say I did. Aligator, elk, deer, antelope.
redchief replied: Oh yeah, I had haggis too. Forgot about that. It was NASTY.
ilovemybaby replied: Caviar. I've had venison and I eat shark but I don't think shark is a weird thing to eat. It's certainly not here in NZ We call it Lemon Fish. I love my shark!
I hate Caviar and Venison. EWWW
Oh yeah I've had Calamari too. It's just Squid isn't it?
MomToJade&Jordan replied: Hmmmmm....
I have had many of the things said above. I will try something at least once. I did live in Hawaii for 4 years so I will add poi to the weird foods list. I must say it has no flavor unless you dip something in it and will come in handy if you ever needed to wallpaper your house.
CantWait replied: Not that weird and all very common, but here goes.......moose beef (like roast beef) - very good, calamari - pretty good, sushi - iew, and esgargo - nasty.
Nina J replied: I've eaten tripe and sheep's brain's, those are probably the weirdest.
I also really like blood sausage (also called black pudding, I call it blood sausage.)
gr33n3y3z replied: I ate eels but I liked them lol
I also had Row I think thats how you spell it Its fish eggs in the sac that removed from the female fish You take sac and all roll it in flour and cook it in a frying pan. I didnt like that
MamaJAM replied: Well - I tried a snail once - never wanted that again. Growing up I used to eat shell-fish and other 'sea critters' (like lobster, crab).....nothing totally 'shocking'. Though now that we keep kosher - most 'unusual' foods are off-limits.
kit_kats_mom replied: snail, octopus, squid, conch, stingray, shark...lots of sea stuff. Alligator.
PrairieMom replied: I have had a small bite of alligator, but Dh is from Wyoming and they are hunting people, so Antelope, elk and moose are dietary staples in their house. I have also eatten quite a bit of buffalo. (there is a large market for it here in the great plains!) I'm not a real fan of those. I feeling is that if it can be kept in a zoo, it has no business on my plate. I'm more of a beef and chicken kinda gal!
MyLuvBugs replied: Well, my dad is a hunter and is always bringing home strange animals for us to eat....but I think the grossest thing was when he killed my pet rabbit b/c she kept eating her babies and mom cooked her up for dinner. I can't eat rabbit now.
A close second is a tie between rattle snake and dog food. He also brought home an aligator to eat but I refused that one. lol
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: octopus is the weirdest I have eaten on purpose. As a special 'treat' for my birthday my exchange mom (i was in germany) made veiswurst and that is calf brain sausage. I had no idea what it was unitl I got home and told my sister, all I knew was it was disgusting...and the peel thing you have to take off first looks like a used condom...definately didn't make it more appetising
mckayleesmom replied: Well.....I was going to eat breakfast...not my tummy is turning ......I think the yuckiest and wierdest thing I tried was Calamari
BAC'sMom replied: I hardly eat any kind of meat so NO Bambi, Thumper, Mr. Ed or Nemo for me. I did however get tricked into eating Bear one time. I didn’t know what it was till after I ate it.
punkeemunkee'smom replied:
Nutria is a water animal kinda like a beaver. I did not know that people ate them.
I have eaten Shark, Alligator, Langua' (tounge) which was actually very good, Barbocoa, Buffalo, wild pig, venison ,tried rattlesnake chili once-nothing too crazy I guess. I used to LOVE lobster and crap but am allergic now...Chesapeke Bay Seafood house was our favorite resturant back home now I can't even chance Red Lobster! I really like calamari but it can be wayyyy too chewy if it is not cooked right.
luvbug00 replied: I've eaten chicken, beef, pork and fish....LOL i refuse anything not of thease food groups!
Cece00 replied: Not good. Really, really "gamey".
Cece00 replied: Yep, I was. I was a little kid. It was probably illegal, who knows. My dad's friend cooked it for us.
Cece00 replied: Nutria looks like a big rat. I think its more related to like a dog or possum or something. I dont know, I'd have to look it up.
kimberley replied: chinese chicken feet i suppose is the weirdest. not much meat but flavorful
i have also eaten curry goat, blood pudding, and raw oysters tho they don't seem weird to me, they are weird to others.
ilovemybaby replied: Your poor bunny!
There are a few things I could never eat.... Kangaroo, Rabbit, Cat, Dog and Duck. That includes Lion, Tiger and any other wild cat. I love cats. But not in that way... My friend has a bumper sticker that says "So many cats, so little recipes!" and another one I can't remember how it goes...
Did you know you can eat Swan? I could never eat a Swan.
You ate dog food? My cousins used to crawl on the kitchen floor and eat the cat food and biscuits. I'm so glad Abby has never done that. She can't get into our kitchen anyway... we have a baby gate up that she still hasn't figured out how to climb.
CosmetologyMommy replied: LOL!!!!!!!!
CantWait replied: That was just way to funny
holley79 replied: Well when I was younger I had a Laosion (sp) babysitter. She made turtle egg omlets. She use to also made frog legs. Those are probably the weirdest I have eaten. Deer and Aligator are common. too
LoganAndAubreesMommy replied: Being a Cajun from Louisiana, I've eaten PLENTY of "weird" things...... I'll try to remember them all. Some aren't weird to me, but I'm sure they're weird to most ppl...
rabbit (we raise them), squirrel, raccoon, pigeon (SP!), dove, quail, turtle, beef brain, beef tongue, ponce (stuffed pork stomach), deer of course, black bird, boudin (which is a sausage-type food and used to be stuffed pig intestines...now it's an artificial casing), cracklins, chitlins, hog-head cheese (they boil the head of a hog and make a dip-like dish with what comes out) and DEFINATELY crawfish ...and yes, I do suck the heads and will be sucking some crawfish heads tomorrow night!!!, rattlesnake.....I can't think of anything else right now...OH, I've tasted armadillo before.
ilovemybaby replied: I need to add a few more things to my "I could never eat this" list. LOL Horse and Dove. Basically the only bird I will eat is chicken.
My "I will eat this" list is basically Chicken, Beef, Pork, Lamb (and I once nearly gave that up because I love itty bitty lambs ) and Fish. And I will eat Squid Rings and Calamari.
Mom2BNTN replied: Nothing to weird for me....oysters, calamari, dolphin, deer, quail...that's all i can think of right now!
coasterqueen replied: Ok, you all think eating placenta is gross? What about 1/2 the stuff mentioned here? Placenta? Brain? Intestines? Stuffed stomach?
Anyways, I've had deer sausage, quail, pheasant and rabbit. I LOVE rabbit minus the bullets in them. That used to gross me out.
