What books are your kids reading?

MommyToAshley wrote: Ashley has finished all five series of the Bob books (8-12 books in each series). We've tried other phonics series, but Ashley doesn't seem to like them as well. I think it's because the Bob books are written in such a way that she can read them herself without having to ask for help to sound out a word. I'd like to get her another set of books if I can find something similar, but I don't know what to get. Any ideas? What books are your kids reading that they really enjoy?

lisar replied: Lexi is reading Charlottes Web right now. For every ten pages her teacher gives her credit for a book. She is the highest reader in her class so they let her do it.

Kaitlin'smom replied: well right now Kaitlin is reading her princess lesson books, she can read a few words and sound out a few, but I need to get her some easier books to read. She is excited she is learing to read and I want to build on that.

luvmykids replied: Lots of easy readers, I get a list from the teacher every week of recommended books for their level. I'll see if I can find it to give you some names.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Maddie reads the Accelerated Readers (AR books). I really like them because they have books in every category and Maddie gets credit for reading them. They have all different levels as well. After each book she reads, she takes a quiz online.

DansMom replied: Daniel's reading has really taken off. He's getting to a point where he doesn't rely much on pictures and self-corrects as he's reading and the context becomes clear.

We love those BOB books too, Dee Dee! At bedtime now, Daniel almost always reads to me. He likes books about dinosaurs and space.

jcc64 replied: Dee Dee- I got another series just like the Bob books- they come in boxed sets with reward stickers and certificates, and the illustrations are a little more substantial than the Bob series. Corey liked it better and had more success with it. It's called Brand New Readers and like Bob books, they come in graduated sets of difficulty. They have a website- brandnewreaders.com- but I bought them in Barnes and Noble, where they were located right next to the Bob series.

lovemy2 replied: Clue me in - Olivia really needs some early reader series - she has some early reader books - but what are the BOB books??

3_call_me_mama replied: Cameron is into the magic treehouse books. Most of them he can read without any assistance. I read him them in the beginning (the first 10 or so) but now I think he's on book 19 or 20. He reads a few chapeters each day as part of his reading assignment. What also likes the boxed sets of books like scooby doo. And he has started to take an interest in comic books. SO we'll see where that goes smile.gif He also enjoys reading books like Madeline and that sor tof thing to kathleen before bed at night

MommyToAshley replied:
They're a series of books that teaches phonics and sight words. The first set is very easy to read for beginners and then you progresses in difficulty through the five sets. There's 8-12 books per set. It's great for building confidence in reading because after the child learns the basic fundamentals taught in each set, the child can read the book themselves.

Thanks!

MommyToAshley replied:
Aweee, that's sweet that he reads to Kathleen. wub.gif wub.gif I've tried a few of those character boxed sets too, Ashley can read them but they don't seem to hold her interest.. not sure why. I'll have to look at the Magic treeehouse books.

Anthony275 replied: accellerated reader books are for grades k-12

luvbug00 replied: Mya reads whatever she can. Right now she is reading some chaper book on horses. ( simple enough and it's a series.) she is doing average in reading. happy.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied:
Nope, they shouldnt' be too advanced. Maddie started reading them in Kinder. wink.gif Your library should have a good list of all of the books on there. I'm pretty sure the Magic Treehouse books are on there.

I like it b/c they tell you the level of the book your child is reading that way you know she chose a book on the right level. Does that make sense? laugh.gif

amymom replied: Dee-Dee,
I am going to PM you a link to our school website. Go to Elementary and then Kindergarten or first grade or reading and see what there is there. There are a few places with ebooks that she may enjoy. There really seems to be alot of resources there.

Also, our local library has a program called Tumble Books.... it requires a password but the link and password are on the website for out library I will PM that link to you too.

Both places have some useful resources. I thought our school website had a link to the A/R books but I have not found it.

PS: If anyone else wants these links I will be glad to send them to you (if I know you), but my name and hometown are in both places due to I am the President of the Library board and the school secretary. So I can't be too careful.

Cece00 replied: Some books he gets from the teacher (she sends home a few on loan every week) and books I buy from the book orders @ school which are designed to be easy for them to read.

He's doing great with reading...he pretty much went from not reading to being able to read on his own (of course he has trouble with bigger words, but he JUST turned 6), we discovered one day he could pretty much just....read...on his own. Now I let him read stuff to me.
