We've been given the green light for solids...
Danalana wrote: Kade's 4 month appointment was today (he's 4 months tomorrow!). He weighs 12 lbs. 12 ozs. and is 23 1/2 inches. He had 2 shots and one oral...not fun, but he's doing great. She told me I can go ahead and start him on oatmeal, fruits and veggies once a day...I'm gonna do fruits last, though, cause I don't wanna risk him not wanting veggies. I'm kinda sad because it seems like he's so grown-up I'm sure I will have a fun pic of his first "meal" later tonight or tomorrow. I got the oatmeal, as well as Gerber stage 1 squash, carrots and green beans. I'll do each one for 3 or 4 days to make sure he does fine with them. So, we had a good appointment. He's a little guy, but Richard and his mother are really little. He's very healthy and that's all that matters. Oh! She thinks she feels something on his top gum...I could have sworn they were getting ready to pop out on the bottom
stella6979 replied: Woohoo! Be sure to have the camera ready as the faces they make are HILARIOUS!!!!
Boo&BugsMom replied: My boys always got solids by 4 months. They were HUGE and they were never satisfied enough with just formula. No allergies either, or health problems, or any issues due to the solid foods.
Can't wait to see the pics Dana! I love those messy faces.
mommy~to~a~bunch replied: This is geared more toward a breastfed baby, but it still applies to ANY baby.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I can't wait to see the messy face pics!
stella6979 replied: Well, I couldn't resist so I thought I'd share a pic of Avery when she tried peaches for the first time.
Danalana replied: I love that picture
My3LilMonkeys replied: Can't wait to see the pics!!! My girls both started on solids around 4 months and we never had any problems either. Madison started even a little earlier - she was a VERY big baby and just wasn't satisfied with formula.
A&A'smommy replied: i cant believe how big he is getting!!! I cant wait to see the pictures. BTW which ped do you use?
MoonMama replied: He's getting so big! WTGrow Kade. Take tons of pictures and let us know how it goes.
Danalana replied: I actually ended up going with a pediatrician in Mississippi (we're just 20 minutes from the Mississippi line). So, we have the same OB still, but not the same Ped. office
Celestrina replied:
I think whomever coined the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words" had to be looking a that pic.
HuskerMom replied: I can't wait to start baby food with Summer. I think with Keith we started about 4 months too. His favorite was bananas and now I can't get him to eat one!
mckayleesmom replied: I think I waited till mine were about 5 months to start...I had tried earlier, but neither were interested then. Both my kids wouldn't touch baby cereal with a 10 foot pole...no matter what I mixed it with.
I can't wait to see pictures.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Same with Aiden, he actually was introduced at 3 1/2 months. He barely had any on him, even the first time. He did great with his tongue, never choked or gagged, and could sit on his own assisted. I knew my baby, and he was ready. He was also on table food by 6 months because he just always wanted the next best thing. He gets sick of things fast....still does.... .
lovemy2 replied:
Dana - have alot of fun its a new and exciting stage - can't wait to see the pics
And OH MY that pic of Avery is just too cute
Calimama replied: Aw I loved watching Miabella's faces as she tried different flavors.
skinkybaby replied: My breast fed babies both started solids around 3 months. Neither had any digestive issues or problems with choking. I talked it over with my pediatrician, who gives me excellent advice and I trust whole heartedly, and came to the conclusion together. Every baby is different. Some are ready for solids earlier than others. You have to do what works best for you and your baby.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Agreed.
Dana thanks for sharing Kade's very important milestone with us!
Kirstenmumof3 replied: Awww that's great news! Both Emily and Spencer started solids at 4 mths. Claudia was around 6 mths, just because of the upheaval in her life (me being in the hospital a lot). They all did great, but none of my children ever liked rice cereal! But they loved oatmeal! Good Luck, I can't wait to see pictures!
kimberley replied: solids are not recommended before 6 months but i know many people who have started well before then with no adverse effects to the child. my eldest started rice cereal at 4mos. he just wasn't getting enough and i bf what seemed like day and night. my next child was also started at 4mos and has had a myriad of allergy issues. both girls were exclusively bf for over 6mos.
what works for one, may not work for another child. You are the parent, You make the right decisions for your child.
everyone needs to respect that. period.
we all have strong opinions, sometimes we need to just keep them to ourselves.
TANNER'S MOM replied: Congrats Dana. It is fun to watch them eat. My babies started ceral about the same time. Peaches and Bananas were a favorite around here. I liked them too!
Side Bar: It's okay to trust you doctor. I have had wonderful doctors, whom when I had a question or thought something was wrong and they even told me, I believe you as a mother, you know your baby and if you say something is wrong then something is wrong!
Every child is different. every mother is different. Every decision we make shouldn't be judged. We shouldn't tell a ANYONE that someone they trust is basically stupid. Why pass so much judgement, sling so many rocks? I guess the thought could be said, why believe something that is cut and pasted off the internet versus what I ped says, who has years of education and training. See what I mean, there are two sides to every story. If you don't agree with something why not, follow the golden rule. No one likes to be critized, No one likes being picked on, No one likes being made to FEEL stupid or talked down to. So please stop doing it to each other.
Side Bar (again) I noticed this is the first of Dana's threads to have this happen too. Please stop.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: Taylor was always too lazy to eat solids at this age! I will warn you to be careful of carrots and sweet potatoes! Tay loved those and we had an emergency pedi visit when I woke up to an orange baby!!!
Oh and Dana-just a tip I learned but introduce food slowly (one at a time) so that if Kade has an issue with one type of food you know what it was that he is having trouble with!
kimberley replied: i agree with going slowly too. jacob was so into his food but he always ate too much and threw up. ick.
and that is a very cute pic!
Sam & Abby's Mom replied: yay for Kade !!!!!!!! Girl,,, try to video tape it, too. I set up ours on the tripod with both Sam and Abby. Its fun to watch. LOL
Its funny how the first few times might be frustrating because the baby is clueless and more seems to be pushed out or all over his/her face. Then,, its amazing how a week or so later (sometimes just days) they seem to be eating like a champ. That always blew my mind.
Danalana replied: Just wanted to thank everybody for the support and encouragement I'm not gonna push it if he doesn't do well after a few tries. His doctor said "it's time", but Kade might not think so. If not, that's ok too. I have to learn all this mother stuff and there's a lot of information for either side. I promise I'm not going to do anything that harms him He might not be ready til 6 months or he might be ready yesterday! I don't think I'm gonna get to try tonight. He was pooped from our day...shopping and vaccinations. He fell asleep on his own about 8 p.m. when I just laid him down so i could go to the bathroom, and he hasn't woken up. He ate at 7 so I was sure he would be hungry again. I'm sad because I had big plans In the morning, we are driving a little over 3 hours to get my SIL and nephew at youth camp...he has a follow-up appt. with his ped on Thursday, and his father can't leave camp (youth pastor). So I'm gonna spend the night tomorrow night and we will drive back on Thursday. The point is (!!), I might not get to try until Thursday night. Richard really wants to see him eat for the first time, so I doubt I'll try tomorrow night. But I will post pics at least by Thursday night, I promise
ETA: I will be going slowly with the veggies, for sure. She told me and I had already read all about it. I will do each one for at least 3 or 4 days to make sure he doesn't have any reactions.
Mommy2BAK replied: woah, I can't believe he's getting so big! What an exciting time! Blakely and Ayden have different pediatrician's and Blakely's ped told me to wait until 6 months for solids so I was very suprised that Ayden's ped suggested starting solids at 4 months. But Ayden didn't care for baby food at that stage and still really doesn't, but it was still fun letting him try all new flavors and such. Have fun, and I can't wait to see some messy face baby pics!
boyohboyohboy replied: caleb started at 3 1/2 months and did great. formula was never enough for him..and he is a great eater to this day. but jake never took baby food we waited until andrew was just over 6 months old and he is still now at 9 months on stage 2s because he hates the tecture. so i guess every baby is different. i would start with the green ones, veggies that is, thats the ones all my kids hated and needed to get a taste for. we also started with rice not oatmeal as it was a little easier to digest. but they liked the oatmeal better and we never did the mixed grains
DillsMommy replied: Dana--that's great. I can't believe he's 4 months already! I think it depends alot on the baby. Both mine started around 4 months. Heck--my MIL wanted to start them both on rice at about 2 weeks! Anyways, I can't wait to see pictures.
A&A'smommy replied: ahh well I don't blame you especially if its closer, i HATE driving all the way to Tuscaloosa just to see a descent Doctor!!! We live pretty close to the mississippi line to but not that close
holley79 replied: Annika did the same thing.
Annika was a lazy baby also. All she wanted to do was nurse so she didn't really eat solids till she was around 8 months old and still it was boob mostly.
Can't wait to see pictures!!!! Those are always the best!
Bamamom replied: Wow - he really is growing up fast. Both of mine started solids at 4 months with no problems. No chance your seeing a ped in Meridian huh? I'll PM you but if we use the same ped I'm going to die!!!!
Oh - one other thought - I always start new food in the morning. I was just always kind of afraid to give them something new and then lay them down for the night an hour later for fear they'd have some allergic reaction during the night. Just a my own little nutty thought but I thought I'd share
A&A'smommy replied: hey you go to meridian I live 45minutes from there
Danalana replied: Wow, yall live close! And thanks for the advice...I'm gonna try to start the squash today, but it might be tomorrow.
