Well this is a big bummer!
coasterqueen wrote: Dh and I wanted to get Kylie a (cheap) digital camera for Christmas because she always wants to use mine and I'm afraid she's going to break it. So after LOTS of looking I found the cutest one in the Disney Shopping Catalog. (Pic below)
So I go to order it today and here is what I find on Disney's website where the camera page is:
"This item will ship in 8 weeks. International delivery not available for this item. WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, or birth defects or other reproductive harm."
Ok, so we aren't going to purchase this now But I'm wondering what the chemical is. Is it in other digital cameras? Grrrrrr.
Boys r us replied: Wow..that's really cute!!!! I'm glad though that you saw that warning!! That's nuts!
A&A'smommy replied: UMMMM please tell me WHY in the FREAKING world would they sell a "toy" that has a chemical in it that could cause cancer!!!!!!!!!! Disney never ceases to shock me!!
Okay sorry I had to freak out a little bit anyway I have NEVER heard of that but it REALLY makes me wonder!!!!
coasterqueen replied: Well I emailed Disney asking them what the chemical is as well as a complaint because I saw the camera in the catalog and there is NO warning in the catalog. I was about to just order it directly on the phone and I'm wondering if I did would someone have said something to me. They only have the warning on their website.
Kaitlin'smom replied: that is cute and if you find one let me know cause Kait is always trying to use mine as well. OMG what chemical is in there??? and why the cheese are they still selling it as a TOY?
My2Beauties replied: What checmical is in a digi camera that could cause cancer? You know - sometimes these companies have to put that crap on there though because nowadays it seems everything causes cancer!
A&A'smommy replied: Your SO right!!! I heard somewhere that a warm shower can cause cancer
3_call_me_mama replied: You'd be surprised at what is in toys that aren't labeled. It's amazing. That warning is actually on SEVERAL products. The chemical is lead. Or a combination containing lead. IT's in hallwoeen masks (believe it or not) they don't state what it is becuase there are several chemicals in the items that are dangerous. I called a company once to ask about it and was told that it contains lead. And tests have been done in the state of California showing correlations between LEAD and cancer. I'll see if I can find the article i found on it. Also if you are lookign for a great kids digital camera (it's not as cute as the one you showed) it's KIDZCAM ( overstock.com has them and also ebay adn several pther places) I didn't see the warning on them though, so they may contain the same parts and chemicals but just not labeled.
Jamison'smama replied: This one is cute.
3_call_me_mama replied: My keyboard is acting up adn I keep double posting:(
coasterqueen replied: You know when Dh and I were discussing it we immediately thought it was probably lead. Remember the whole lunch box thing. Well DH's work did have them tested and the levels were WAY under what is considered safe so they chose not to pull them off their line but did warn their employees. DH and I chose to throw them away, though, and will not accept any more from his company.
So it probably is lead. I'd LOVE to get the camera but literally KNOWING the warning they are stating I would feel completely guilty if I bought it and something later in life happened to my girls, kwim?
Insanemomof3 replied: What a bummer, but I agree with everyone...almost everything these days causes cancer. I heard APPLES can cause cancer.
coasterqueen replied: Aww, that is cute. I wonder how great of pics it takes.
kimberley replied: i dont get why they make stuff geared to kids then have warnings like that. glad you caught it before you bought it tho.
3_call_me_mama replied: Did you check out hte Kidzcam one? A friend of our jsut got one adn it takes pretty good pictures, and is pretty durable. We are thinking of getting one for cameron... it doesn't have teh lead warning on it.. so it may not contain it.. but who knows. here's a pictuer of it Kidzcam
jem0622 replied: Lillian Vernon has a 35mm kid's camera. I was thinking of getting it for Nathan or having gparents get it for him. Have you considered 35mm?
MommyToAshley replied: Ashley has this princess set, but the camera is not a real working camera. It is actually a view finder that show different scenes when you push on the button. It says cute phrases like "say cheese" and "how beautiful". Ashley got it for her 2nd birthday and still pretends to take pictures when she finds it in her toybox. But, it's not an actual working camera if that is what you are looking for.
Jamison'smama replied: Ok, I'm blind! I see that now that I look at the description---It said digital camera and I thought--hmmmm. Thanks for clarifying! I did see some really cute cameras in TRU this weekend--
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: That is strange!! Now I'm glad they put on the warning, but why would anyone buy it then??? Especially for a child?!! I hope you find a different one. If not, what about just the throw away kind? She may just have fun clicking the picture button. And it may be exciting to wait for the pictures to be developed.
