Well That did not work! - "natural" cleaning product...

punkeemunkee'smom wrote: The other week I was at the health food store and the owner asked me to try a new line of products they were going to carry. I told her I am a big bleach,amonnia,anti-bacterial girl but she said these work just as well and I should just try them. I agreed to try the tub and tile cleaner for a few weeks and see what I thought. I scrub our tubs every week because we do have a lot of lime in our water. I thought the cleaner was doing an OK job-I would not be comfortable with using it on the toilet- until I really got to looking at the tub. ohmy.gif It looked like it had a film building in it. I got the comet out and went to scrubbing and was so grossed out by the film on the walls and inside the tub! huh.gif I guess it is back to bleach for me!!!

My question for those who use natural cleaners is do you have minerals in your water? Is that why it did not work for me?

sparkys2boys replied: Hmm, weird huh. Did you let the store know about it?? I would for sure!

mommy~to~a~bunch replied: Well, since it was new, maybe it was still in the trial phase? I'd definitely let them know for sure too.

We have a whole house water softener system; our water would be orange otherwise!

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Looks like you'll be letting her know it didn't work!!

I don't use natural cleaners. My husband would say I don't use cleaners at all. laugh.gif blush.gif I should try to find something a little more environmentally friendly. I could use suggestions. DH will never stray from bleach I'm afraid, but an all purpose "green" household cleaner would be nice.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Peroxide is a more "green" alternative to bleach, some would say.

That's what I use. laugh.gif

coasterqueen replied: Good question, Abbie.

I often wonder about things like that too, because many have mentioned in other posts about how much easier it is to get stains out of clothes with natural products, well any product for that matter but I can't ever get anything out of our clothes growl.gif . DH says it's our "hard" water. wacko.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: Walmart carries a line of green friendly cleaners now. I haven't tried them yet. I forgot what it's called or who makes them. Clorox? Not sure. unsure.gif

Jackie012007 replied: I use the Clorox Greenworks stuff and I really like it. It does a good job (especially on grease) and have a nice light lemony scent.

But we have really crappy water here so I do use Bar Keepers Friend when sleaning the tub and sink - both are porcelain and I have tried everything to clean then and BKF works the best - it isn't as harsh as Ajax/Comet, either!

luvmykids replied: I like the Clorox green line too, I don't know how "green" it truly is but it does the job for counters and glass. We have hard water too, and even with our softener we get plenty of build up and rust stains, bleach is the only thing that gets rid of them.

MommyToAshley replied: DH hates that I use bleach. He hates any kind of chemical and would prefer that I use none at all. But, I just can't seem to find anything that will work like bleach does. I have been looking for a "greener" solution. Someone even said that vinegar works for keeping mold and mildew away, but I tried it and I don't think it did.

msoulz replied:
Thanks for that - I have been wondering about it! thumb.gif

Crystalina replied: I've bought the Clorox Greenworks but have not used it yet. Geesh, I need to clean. blush.gif

I use vinegar and water. And salt for stuck on stuff. I get a lot of my tips from Heloise and Kim & Aggie. emlaugh.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Funny how is also works BETTER than Ajax and Comet. I love that stuff. I use it in the kitchen sink all the time. thumb.gif

Crystalina replied:
BKF ? What's that? huh.gif

Chiflata2003 replied: I was thinking about trying the green cleaners as well, but I'm a germ freak so I will stick with my bleach for now. tongue.gif

punkeemunkee'smom replied:
I am too especially about the bathroom-which is why when I saw the grime building up it was back to the good ol environmentally damaging standbys for me! rolling_smile.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: white vinegar works great for removing hard water buildup. I wash our shower curtians in it and I keep a spray bottle of it under the sink.

For those with hard water, try vinegar or borax in your laundry. It helps with the hard water problem.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
It's called Bar Keepers Friend. You can get it at Walmart, the grocery store, etc. It's in a gold container similar to Comet. It gets ALL those icky scratches out of my sink instantly, and more! thumb.gif

jcc64 replied: My water is ridiculously hard. Though I hate the idea of bleach, I have yet to find anything that works as well. I will try the vinegar- I'll try anything once, and I have to be the only idiot that actually likes the smell of vinegar. It reminds me of dyeing easter eggs! rolling_smile.gif

Jackie012007 replied: OOH I love the smell of vinegar too!

Yeah I use a cup of white vinegar in my laundry as a deodorizer and it also softens the water!

moped replied: What is it called - I use a few Norwex prducts....

punkeemunkee'smom replied: Ecover something or another...I will look.

MommyToAshley replied:
I don't particularly care for the smell of vinegar, but I will take it over the smell of bleach. In fact, I just finished cleaning the bathroom with bleach and soft scrub (with bleach) and I hate the smell but it looks so clean and I feel like I've killed any little germies. DH and Ashley are gone, or I am sure he'd be throwing a fit about the bleach. biggrin.gif
