Well, I have some news
PrairieMom wrote: We had Al's Cardiology Appt this morning, and Got some news. I went in there thinking that there was no way anything could possibly be wrong, and that her murmur was nothing, and actually looking forward to the ultrasound because watching that kind of stuff is pretty cool. Well, it turn out that she has a pretty decent sized ASD, which is basically a hole in her heart. It will either be totally fine and close on its own, or she may possibly need A heart cath or possibly surgery. We are going to wait for 6 months and have another Echocardiogram done before we make any major decisions. Who knows, this thing may resolve its self by then. So, we could use some hole close vibes, and some keep mommy and daddy calm vibes right now. We are both a little shocked. I went from 100% not worried at all, to about 20% worried, but we aren't panicked by any means.
boyohboyohboy replied: tara, when i was born at 32 weeks, even way back then...i had a hole in my heart, and they thought they were going to have to surgery on me, and it closed all on its won. i am sure that will happen for allie too! i will keep her in my prayers..i am sure its going to be hard to wait that 6 months..
sparkys2boys replied: I would be freaking out so good for you on staying calm so far. I hope that it closes on its own and you guys dont have to worry. Does it have any adverse effects on her now?
lovemy2 replied: Oh Tara - many many close hole vibes to all of you - poor thing - does any of this affect her day to day living so to speak - does or could she have any side effects from it in the meantime???
And is this something they would have seen during an ultrasound when she was in utero?
Boo&BugsMom replied: Wow Tara. Good for you for remaining calm. Big Al is in my prayers!
Mommy2BAK replied: Oh no, that is awful, she will be in my thoughts and prayers
~~~~close hole vibes~~~~
PrairieMom replied: She is totally fine. They think it may be what is keeping her so small, (she's in the 5th %) and it may make her tired, but she is a total ball of energy. She looks so good that we weren't worried about it at all. I actually was giving DH a hard time for worrying. but now that we know that it is "something" the story changes a bit. I am sure this thing will close up on its own, so I'm not to freaked out yet, we will just have to see what cards we have in our hand in July after the next test. It was just so strange to be sitting in a Dr's office while they tell us about our surgical options. I was like, What are we even doing here? It was so weird.
mommy~to~a~bunch replied: Tara - we went through this with Kayla when she was 15 months old. Her docote heard a murmur, and did some tests, and she had 2 holes, a ASD (atrial septal defect) & VSD (ventricular septal defect). She was monitored to see if they closed, and they didn't. So she needed surgery when she was 2 years 3 months old (that was June of '06). Kayla was ALWAYS small, only 16 lbs. at 1 year old, always so tired, and turned an awful purple whenever she was cold. But after her surgery, it was like night & day! She was up playing the next day, full of energy! She had the open heart surgery on a Friday, and we wnt home on Monday. And she has GROWN so much too, in height & weight. And it's because her heart is so much more efficient now.
It will be OK ! PM me if you ever want to talk!
MommyToAshley replied: I've heard alot about this lately. It seems to be more common, or we just have the technology to detect it now. Most people say it heals on it own, but it's good that they are keeping an eye on it.
Is there anything special Allie has to do/not do? Keep us posted. I am sure everything will be fine, but I will say a little prayer anyways.
PrairieMom replied: nope. They aren't really concerned about it. DH asked if it was still okay to rough house with her, or if we have to limit her activity or something and they told us to just treat her normal. I think DH is way more freaked out than I am, I learned about heart defects in school and am pretty comfortable with where we are now, it just knocked me back a bit finding out that there was actually something going on, not just a mild heart murmur. Thank God thats all it is. There are way worse things out there. We are really blessed that this is all we have to deal with.
Kentuckychick replied: Lots and lots of close hole vibes comin' your way!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I'm sorry it wasn't better news, like you were hoping. But, I know she will be fine. I hope you don't have to go the surgery route and it corrects on its own.
amynicole21 replied: I'm keeping her (and Mommy and Daddy!) in my thoughts!
Crystalina replied: Evan has one and I didn't find out until last year! I had to take him to another doctor because his usual ped was out and this ped kept listening to his heart really hard and I asked if there was a problem and he said, "Oh, I'm just checking on his murmur." What?!
Oh yeah, he has one. Has since he's been born. Your doctor made a note to check it. You didn't know mom?
Uh no!
Nothing to worry about I'm sure which is probably why you were never told.
Meanwhile I'm thinking, He's 4 yrs old!!
I then looked it up online and found it was not not normal so I guess I leave it to the docs. He seems fine.
lovemy2 replied: You are amazing Tara and I think attitude is half the battle when you are dealing with medical problems - she will be ok one way or the other
Our Lil' Family replied: Many prayers for you all! I hope in 6 months they find that it closed!
Kirstenmumof3 replied: I'm so sorry to hear this! My thoughts and prayers will be with you! I'm sure that everything will work out fine!
