We just had the biggest scare...

MommyToAshley wrote: Ashley's allergies have been horrible the last few days. She's had 7 bloody noses and red puffy eyes. Poor girl is miserable. I made an appointment this morning with her ped to talk about what other allergy meds we can try. The ped suggested adding Cingular along with the Claritin. (We've tried Claritin, Cingular, Zyrtec, Nasonex) She also gave Ashley pataday eye drops. Here's the scary part:

We stopped to eat lunch and her eyes were bothering her so I put the pataday drops in her eye (just one in each eye). Within a minute the white part of her eye blistered up... the white part of her eye was blistered way out past her eye lid and it covered about half of her eye. It was very scary, I freaked out, and turned around and went right back to the ped's office. (Poor Ashley didn't even get a bite of her lunch and was crying because she didn't get to eat.) Her ped took her straight back, looked at the eye and said she thought it was some kind of allergic reaction but had never seen anything like it. She said usually an eye reaction will cause the area around the eye to swell, not the part of Ashley's eye that blistered up. She brought her two other partners in and then a ped doc from the office across from their office to see if they had any ideas... no one had seen anything like it. So, our ped called the ophthalmologist at Childrens Hospital and told them they were sending us there right away. It looked better by the time we got to the ophthalmologist, but he said it was a severe allergic reaction. He gave us two different kinds of eye drops but now I am afraid to try them, but he said she will be miserable and it won't get any better if I don't. Uggghh... I hate this.

I'm glad it's going down but I too would be very scared to put in the new eye drops! I guess just do one eye at a time and wait a few minutes in between to make sure everything seems okay!

punkeemunkee'smom replied: OMG Dee Dee! I am so sorry for you and poor Ashley! Bless her heart! I will be praying for a quick recovery!

*Sidenote-Taylor is allergic to erythromiocin and the way we found out is through a reaction to eye drops. Be sure and ask your doctor if they had any antibiotics in them because if they did you have to avoid those antibiotics oraly now as well! blink.gif

msoulz replied: Oh no, poor baby!!! And poor mom! Hopefully it clears up soon. hug.gif

Bamamom replied: That is so scary!!! Bless your heart - and Ashley's! I can't even imagine how she must be feeling. I hate having my eyes messed with - like I'd literally rather have a pelvic exam than an eye exam. I hope she is feeling better soon. hug.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: hug.gif how very scary. Tell her Kaitlin says hope you feel better soon. give her a hug from both of us. hug.gif

Idk anything about eyedrops for allergic symptoms. We're BIG fans of nasacort in this house- Steve and Alec both improved DRAMATICALLY after using it for just a few weeks, so much so that they don't even need to use it regularly anymore. Alec had an asthmatic cough, and when the allergist prescribed this, I was like wth?! I didn't think he had anything wrong with his nose. Allergist explained how everything's connected/affected with allergies, so I gave it a shot. PS- cough went away, asthma symptoms went away, and Alec is off of all meds. Steve, whose asthma is MUCH more severe (we have animals and that's his trigger), tried Alec's nasacort for a few weeks, and his symptoms improved exponentially as well. It even helped with his annoying, chronic snoring. Of course, his own dr never prescribed it- Steve went to him and asked for a script.
I know you mentioned nasonex, but try nasacort. Every allergy med is different, it might work!

redchief replied: Wow, that would have scared the daylights out of me too, and I've seen some pretty scary looking things! I'm a little sensitive to eyes though with all of Erin's problems over the years. I think the reaction Ashley had is called ocular edema, and though it's nasty looking, it doesn't usually cause permanent damage unless it keeps getting repeated. The pediatric ophthalmologist would be current on ingredients in the eye drops he prescribes so I think you can safely use the new prescriptions.

I'm intrigued about the Similasan drops. I might even try those myself.

WOW I can honestly say that I would have FREAKED!! I am so sketchy about eyes, because they are so delicate, I don't even like to use visine. But I think you handled it beautifully!! biggrin.gif
