Vonage - Anyone have it?

luvmykids wrote: I'm seriously considering the switch, just because they are soooo much cheaper. My grandma switched and she says it's no different than regular phone service in any way but something freaks me out about not having a "land line". I guess if the power goes out you'd lose it, but same with my phone line now. Just curious to hear if anyone has tried it and not liked it.

kit_kats_mom replied: love it. thumb.gif the free long dist is great! Sometimes you get a bad connection but it's not often enough to get me to switch. I think we did a thread about this awhile back. Try a search.

C&K*s Mommie replied: We do not have it. But here are some links for ya. smile.gif

Here is one post by *Willsmama* Vonage

And here is one from Naomi (Our Lil' Family) Vonage

Jamison'smama replied: We've had if for a while and love it---my parents have it---I recommend it to anyone except people who are pretty computer/technology illiterate. My parents have trouble understanding both the concept and troubleshooting---but that's what my DH is for.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: We don't have vonage but we have the same type of thing - ours is called Packet 8. It's only 20 bucks a month for unlimited long distance and all the features like caller id and call waiting and stuff. BUT I hate not having a phone that isn't dependent on my internet connection ~ If the cable goes out or if we just lose our internet (which happens a lot we don't have a very good connection. dry.gif ) then I'm totally out of luck and don't have any way of reaching anyone. If you have a cell phone, then you wouldn't have that problem though. wink.gif

Oh and another thing that drives me NUTS is sometimes even if the internet connection is perfect the phone just plain won't work. growl.gif It's really frustrating, but that might be something to do with the company we've got - maybe Vonage is more reliable. dunno.gif

luvmykids replied: Thanks for the links, Nicole.

I think I may give it a shot, I do have an alarm but don't really arm it ever so I don't think that would be a problem. My phone bill is about $120 a month for phone, long distance, internet, etc so woo hoo, that would save a nice chunk!

Halo42101 replied: We had it and was so upset by the poor service we got while paying for it. We had a terrible connection the whole time we used the phone. Sometimes, we couldn't even use the phone because of it. It would be all scratchy or it would just completely drop our call in the middle of a conversation. Then, when we tried to cancel it, they said we would not have to pay for the cancelation fee but then made us after and my husband had to have a word with a representitive about the poor service we got and for lying to us about the cancelation fee. So, no, I would never recomend it again. mad.gif

kit_kats_mom replied:
Our alarm company actually did end up working just fine with Vonage.

Jamison'smama replied: Our alarm works also. My parents had a bad connection and I had a tremendous experience with a customer support personl. My parents needed to upgrade their motem but that's free through the internet provider.

I am aware that there is a disconnect fee if you have the service for under a year--but they wave it if it is within the 30 day trial period. I believe it is 39.99 which for us was less than the difference we were paying (but too much if the service was awful the whole time!)

We also have an additional phone number in Tulsa where my friends and parents live so that they can call a local number and we recieve it here as if they were calling our regular home number---5 dollars a month. It's pretty cool.

MyLuvBugs replied: We decided against Vonage b/c it was still pricey. We have the phone through cable line just like Vonage, but use a company called Packet 8. I get a discount with them through Melaleuca, so it's real cheap. It does work just like a land line, but sometimes there are little quirks. dry.gif rolleyes.gif But we had the same problem with a regular land line anyway. laugh.gif

angieclayton replied: We don't have it but several of my friends do - and they LOVE IT!

I am considering the switch as well.

Angie

luvmykids replied:
I love that you can do that, that's one of the things that really appeal to me!

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: We have been strongly concidering it and will probably switch soon but...
You need to make sure they set basically a speed dial for you for 911 becasue it will not automatically send it to your police dept. if you try to call. That and when they do set up 911 for you it goes to a regular business line not the Emergency line. that is the only thing holding dh back right now.

redplaydoh replied: Before we moved we had it and loved it... I really miss it now.
