Vitamins

My2Beauties wrote: My MIL recently told me that I need to start giving Hanna a vitamin everyday, because I choose not to vaccinate for the flu and because this weather is making everyone crazy sick. I never even thought about vitamins at 2 because I didn't know what they had in them, what she needed more of, less of etc... Anyone have any advice. She named one but I can't remember, it was a complex name blush.gif Any advice anyone? What vitamin to give a 2 year old? Can I just simply give her Flinstone vitamins?

PrairieMom replied: I give The Boy Winnie the pooh vitimins with extra vitimin C. The filitstone ones need to be cut in half for a 2 year old. I just read the back of the box and what ever says for ages 2 and up, I give him. My Ped said that I can do it if I want, expecially if he is not eating well, or not eating balanced meals.

I would also tell my MIL that vitamins are not going to guarentee that your kid won't get sick, cause she will. Its cold and flu season for Petes sake! and it isn't the weather that makes people sick, its being cooped up with other people who are sick! Oh, and sucking on the handle of the grocery cart at Walmart, which is what makes MY kid sick! wacko.gif

I just like to give him vitimins because he loves them, and will brush his teeth for them! laugh.gif

5littleladies replied: They now have My First Flintstones for 2-3 year olds. People who do get vaccinated still get the flu so taking vitamins is no guarantee, but it certainly isn't going to hurt though and it can help. happy.gif My kids love taking their Flintstones-they ask for them all day long. rolleyes.gif

PrairieMom replied:
Really? I will have to look closer. I LOVE flintstone vitamins! I will look for those next time!

MamaJAM replied: Our ped doesn't recommend daily vitamins for kids (unless the child is a very horrible eater). We start giving our kids vitamins 2, maybe 3, times per week when they go off formula at age 1. Different ages get different types. From 1-2 years old - we do the liquid drops......from 2-4 we give 1/2 of an off-the-shelf child's vitamin (during the winter fall/winter months we get the ones with added vitamin C - during the summer months we get added iron).....from 4-12 we give one full-sized child's vitamin. My oldest DD is 13 and takes a 'Women's" pill-form vitamin.
If you think your child might do well with some type of vitamins - call your ped's office and see what they recommend for her age.

PhiMuMommy replied: my son gets flintstone vitamins every other day because the doses are higher than his age requires.. so instead of halfing them.. i just skip a day.. he LOVES them (not the orange ones tho..lol) plus he sees my mom take her meds everyday so it makes him feel older too..

My2Beauties replied:
Oh I definitely know it won't stop her from getting sick, especially with this nasty weather, I just really never thought about it, it could atleat help to somewhat boost her immune system. I am going to try the My First Flinstones! Thanks guys! thumb.gif

ammommy replied: Be sure to get the ones without iron in them. It's easy for kids to fatally OD on iron and unfortunately by the time you realize that something is wrong it's too late. That's one of the things that my ped pounded into my head. He's pretty laid back so I took him seriously.

ediep replied: Jason took the prescription vitamin until he was 3, I think its poly vi sol or something like that. When he turned 3, his ped said to just get some OTC vitamins for his age. I give him the winnie the pooh gummy vitamins. He really likes them, and not sure if its related, but he is getting over his colds very quickly sice he has been taking them everyday

My2Beauties replied:
POly vi sol - that's it, that is what MIL was trying to get me to give her! Thanks Edie! But you said those are rx vitamins? So I take it I can't find them in the store eh?

ediep replied:
They do have an OTC version of poly vi sol, I saw it at the drug store the other day, but I have no idea if it is exactly the same at the RX or not

Good Luck

interribleplain replied: My son has been getting PolyViSol every day since he was born. I am a HUGE advocate of vitamins... I think everyone on earth should do a daily multivitamin. All in all, I take about 15 vitamins daily (all different and for different things, not all the same). When my son was EBF, he did the PolyViSol without iron, but now that he is on solids and BFing, he does with iron. The PolyViSol are liquid... older kids will think they taste HORRIBLE (they are right!) but my son actually loves them. When he gets big enough for a solid chewable vitamin, I will let him do those instead.
