Urine smells foul???

coasterqueen wrote: Ok, last week once or twice I noticed Megan's diaper (pee) smelled really foul. Wasn't sure what it was and ignored it. blush.gif Then I noticed if again once or twice this week and still wasn't sure about it. Then my MIL noticed it this morning and I've noticed it twice since then today. unsure.gif

What could this be? Should I take her in? She has no fever, she has the reminents of a chest cold from a week ago. She has been fussy during night time hours but I chalked that up to possible 2 year molars coming in.

jcc64 replied: What does it smell like, Karen?

coasterqueen replied: I don't know how to describe it. It just stinks. I've called the telenurse and she says we should go into the ER if she develops a fever, otherwise she scheduled an appointment for her on Monday.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: It isn't too unusual for kids to get UTIs without fever. I've seen it happen. That is the most common cause for foul smelling urine. There is now way to describe it, but after 6 years in the lab, I can tell when I open a urine cup whether or not there's going to be bacteria. I don't even need to look under the scope. It simply reeks.

amynicole21 replied: Has she eaten anything out of the ordinary? Asparagus and other veggies make urine smell awful.

Simplebeliever replied: I have no advice, but I hope it clears up. I was going to suggest maybe it's some sort of veggie she ate.

CantWait replied: I was going to suggest Asparagus or UTI as well. If she hasn't eaten anything unusual, I'd take her in.

mckayleesmom replied: Has she been getting enough water to drink?

I would try giving her a little deluted water with cranberry juice for a couple days to see if it clears up before her next doctors appointment.

mom2my2cuties replied: I would say a UTI as well - your urine isn't supposed to have any sort of odor. If it's a sickly sweet smell I would say take her in immediately - the sweetish smell usually means a blood sugar problem. But if it's not a sweetish smell, I would wait until her appointment and give her cranberry juice to help with a UTI like Brianne said.

Nina J replied: I have no idea. Sometimes Emily's urine smells like really strong ammonia, I get that too. My doctor told me urine is supposed to smell like ammonia.

Maybe she ate something that made it smell foul?

withchild334 replied: My daughter got smelly urine when her molars were coming through so it could be that? Otherwise its quite common for kids of that age to get UTI's so try cranberry juice.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Wil had this problem about a month ago. Both DH and I were commenting on how bad his diapers smell in the morning. It went away though...maybe I should have taken him in, but I didn't. Let me know if you find out anything, k? unsure.gif

My2Beauties replied: Hanna did this a couple of times as well, to me urine always stinks anyways. If it smells that bad, I would say a UTI as well..or you said she had a chest cold, was she on antibiotics, this can make urine stink as well I believe.
