Update on my nephew - Peyton

mckayleesmom wrote: Yesterday my mom called from my sisters house...she had the kids outside playing. Peyton is starting to finally try to hold his head up and lean forward in his walker. He has a new therapist...and the old one also visits. The new therapist has a cart that he leans on and he is starting to try to push with his legs. The therapist also got him to start eating some solid food..bananas...He doesn't like doing it though,,but its progress. My sister has been giving him pediasure a couple times a day...and some kind of medamusal drink (he has trouble pooping, because he doesn't have the muscles to do it well..they usually have to use suppositories and help him get it out)......But just wanted to let eveyone know hes making a little progress. My sister also got the approval to send his records to a hospital in Texas that specializes in delayed and Mentally handicapp children. They also have approval for his MRI to be done within the next 5 months (long waiting list). He also has a new specialized carseat that still faces backwards and is made just for him and his body.

mckayleesmom replied: Thanks guys!...We are hoping that if we keep working with him...maybe he will come out a little more...just a little at a time.

jcc64 replied: I think the first time you posted about this I mentioned the importance of early intervention with dd kids. It makes such a HUGE difference, and it clearly seems to be the case for your little nephew. It's also critical for your sister to have the support and guidance from the therapists, who have a unique perspective on what parents of dd kids go through. I think in time your sister will learn to adjust her expectations of what your nephew can and can't do, and every little achievement will be a joyous occasion. Kids so often overcome and surpass dismal early predicitions of how much they're capable of achieving.
I'm glad she's starting to get the help she needs with your nephew, and she's certainly lucky to have such a supportive sister. I'll be pulling for all of you.
