Update on my mom's surgery

kit_kats_mom wrote: I'm just going to copy and paste the email that my uncle just sent out.

Friends .........

Susan's surgery was finished and she was out of the OR at about 6:45 and reported to be in good shape. She is expected to be in the recovery room for about an hour before we can see her.

As expected from what was seen on the earlier CT scans, they found and removed a bulky mass along with a sizable portion of her colon and some adjacent swollen lymph nodes.

In addition they found a number of smaller tumors, mostly on and in the peritoneal lining (called carcinomatosis). They removed all of the larger of those, taking out all those not treatable with chemotherapy, leaving behind only pinhead sized tumors.

Most importantly, there was no evidence of any other major organs being affected. That there was no tumor invading or implanted anywhere else.

Dr. Sieloff, the surgeon stated that "this was a good start." The treatment from here on will be dictated to a large extent by what exactly the pathologists find in the tissues that were removed. He repeated that "this was a treatable condition [with chemo]."

I will send you another report tomorrow to et you know how she is doing after a night's rest.

Mike

So, I'm preparing myself for the "C" word but trying to stay positive. It's the least I can do for a woman who's main personality trait has been positivity to the point of being annoying for decades. wink.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: hug.gif Glad to hear it went well.

MommyToAshley replied: hug.gif hug.gif I am glad the surgery went well. And, Cary, it sounds like the best possible situation if it is cancer. From the email, I get that the surgeon is very positive that this is treatable.

When will you get to see your Mom again? Hang in there, we're here for you.

kit_kats_mom replied: She has an excellent support system up there in Tallahassee so I'm not going up there until she's released from the hospital. I plan to go up by myself when she's released and stay at least a week to help with house stuff, making sure she's doing what she needs to do and transporting her if the need be. It's times like this that having a close family is really a blessing. They keep telling me that I don't need to go up there and that I have my hands full already. However, as her only child, I do feel like it's ultimately my responsibility. I'll take their help but I need to be there too. Plus, I just want to be there for her like she's always been for me.

luvmykids replied: I know the mere thought of the "c" word is devastating, but like Dee Dee said, it sounds like her doctor is confident that it's treatable hug.gif

Of course you want to be there, and your mom will appreciate it more than you'll ever know, I'm sure. Continued thoughts and prayers for your family hug.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: It sounds hopeful, Cary. I will continue to pray for her. I'm so glad she has such a good support system.

I hope Lauren is feeling better and you all get a good night's rest. hug.gif

Jamison'smama replied: I am also glad to hear that the news was somewhat positive. I know the thought of cancer is horrifying and I pray that everything is benign and she can be well on her way to a speedy recovery.

Sorry about Lauren, I hope this is a 12 hour bug.

A&A'smommy replied: hug.gif hug.gif Thanks for the update honey, keep us posted!!! hug.gif hug.gif

MomToJade&Jordan replied: I'm glad that she came through it all right. hug.gif The doctor seems positive and that is good. Hang in there girl, and let me know if you need me for anything. hug.gif

amynicole21 replied: It sounds really promising, Cary! I'm so glad that it went well. I'm continuing to keep her in my thoughts. hug.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: cary, I am so glad that your mom did so well in the surgery, and now can start her recovery process, even though her road might be long, you two have a wonderful relationship that will help pull her thru.
prayer coming your way for you and your mom.

lovemy2 replied: I am glad the surgery went well and my thoughts and prayers for you and your family continue strongly hug.gif hug.gif

coasterqueen replied: That's good it hasn't invaded any other major organs. Sounds very promising.

The "C" word is hard to deal with. I'm dealing with that now, taking a very dear friend to get hers done. I found it harder to take her than she found it taking it. Just be there for her and try to stay positive. It's hard, I know.

jcc64 replied: Cary- "treatable condition" is what you want to hear. Her positivity will be a HUGE asset to her recovery and any subsequent treatment. The fact that it was contained and not spread to other organs is of course wonderful news. Both of you will continue to be in my thoughts. Please KUP. hug.gif

DansMom replied: hug.gif All things considered, that's a reasonably good update. I hope your mom recovers from the surgery comfortably hug.gif

My2Beauties replied: All in all it sounds like a very positive turnout, even if it is Cancer. Here's to her continuing to feel better and become 100% again hug.gif I'm saying plenty of Prayers for her and you. hug.gif
