Update on kitty peeing on the couch

amynicole21 wrote: I took my cat to the vet this weekend, and $276 worth of blood and urine labs later ohmy.gif she has hyper-thyroidism. Basically, her metabolism is working overtime. They don't know if this is causing the weird peeing, but they said if she feels weird she may be acting out by urinating in weird places. So, she'll be on $35/month medication for the rest of her life. Now I have to figure out how to get a pill down her without being torn to pieces sad.gif

alice&arik replied: Wow that is a lot of bills for a cat. Hope it works out. Could you put the pills in it's food, so it will eat it? Like soft food? I don't knwo much about cats so i am not very helpful. tongue.gif

Kila replied: Try grinding the pill up in fine powder form, putting it in soft food and mixing it around a little. She may not even notice.

MomToJade&Jordan replied: They actually make something to help you give the pill to the cat. Maybe ask the vet about it. It has a soft tip on the end where you place the pill then you put it into the cats mouth and push the plunger deal in. The best way is to get the pill as far back into the cats throat as possible. When you get it there rub the throat so the cat will swallow. I know this doesn't sound great and I used to have to do it, but it was the easiest way to administer a pill to a cat.

A&A'smommy replied: ugh poor kitty! And poor mommy that is quite a bit of money! I hope the meds help your kitty!

How To Give A Cat A Pill

If you have ever tried to give a cat a pill you know

how difficult it is. The following instructions are fool proof!

1. Pick up the cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm
as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while
holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from under chair. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom and throw soggy pill away.

4. Take a new pill from foil wrap. Cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top
of wardrobe. Call spouse in from garden.

6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between the knees. Holding
front and rear paws, ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold cat's head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make a note to buy a new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines from hearth and set aside for gluing later.

8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with it's head just visible from beneath spouse's armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force cat's mouth open with pencil and blow down straw.

9. Check label to make sure that pill is not harmful to humans. Drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10.Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with spoon, flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for last tetanus shot.
throw t-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12. Call the fire department to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid
cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

13. Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining room table. Find heavy duty pruning gloves from garage. Force cat's mouth open with small trowel. Push pill into mouth followed} by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 1/2 pint of water down throat to wash pill down.

14. Get spouse to drive you to emergency room. Sit quietly
while doctor stitches finger and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Stop by furniture store on the way home to order a new table.

15. Arrange for vet to make housecall.

HUGS to you. Glad you found out what was wrong w/ kitty.

amynicole21 replied: LOL! Julie, that story is the first thing I thought of when the vet told me I'd have to give her a pill every day for the rest of her life! rolling_smile.gif

coasterqueen replied: Aww Amy, I'm so sorry. Good luck giving the pill to her. I know when we had to give Jakey medicine when he got attacked by that dog, DH would open his mouth, pop the pill in, keep his mouth closed and massage his throat. Jakey didn't move and let him do it but we still felt awful for him. sad.gif grouphug.gif

jen replied: I'm sorry about your kitty! that is awful. You may not know this, i didn't, that most cleaners (especially the ones for pet mess) have some form of amonia in them and that is what the cat will smell, and mother nature will tell her to keep peeing there wacko.gif My cat Booty just kept peeing in the same spot until i actually took lemon juice and water (50/50) in a spray bottle and doused the area, it didn't bleach my carpet by the way but I don't know about furniture! But it did solved our little peeing problem. Cat pee is the worst and it is oily so water doesn't get rid of it alone. The acid in the lemon juice is foul to them for some reason according to this cat pee professional in this book i have! LOL! HTH

Also about the pills, two of our cats will accept them and swallow them easily. One of our cats will butcher you before even thinking about swallowing anything! I would use a small amount of wet food and get a pill crusher. GOOD LUCK!!!

DansMom replied: I've become really good at pilling my cat. The best method I've found is the following:

Put cat between your knees facing away from you.

Have the pill in your left fingertips. With the heel of your right hand on the top of her head, place your right index finger just under her two front teeth and pull straight up. This causes the mouth to open automatically.

Drop the pill into the back of her throat, then close her lower jaw, holding her mouth closed, and stroke her throat gently. By reflex she will swallow, as long as the pill landed in the back of her throat.

The quicker and more confidently you proceed, the better. With animals, it doesn't pay to be tentative or hesitant. They are more submissive if you know yourself and convey to them that you are going to do this thing and that's that. I'm a total wimp in general, but I've learned to be somewhat masterful when it comes to pilling.

I do know someone else who is successful at putting the pill in some tuna and just letting the cat eat the pill. I have two cats, so dealing with food separation during eating just didn't work out well for me.

Good luck!

Good luck!

Kirstenmumof3 replied:
I'm sorry that you have to do this to your poor cat. When ever we had to give medications I got my DH to hold them so that they couldn't scratch us, then you pry open there mouth if you press right at the very back of the jaw the mouth will pop open. Then you put the pill in their cheek and put your finger over there nose (so they swallow). You will get the hang of it after a while. If this doesn't work ask the vet if it's okay to grind it up into a small amount of can food (like a tsp size amount) this way you know it will be all finished. GOOD LUCK!

kit_kats_mom replied: Hm. I've been giving my cat a steriod pill every other day for a few years now. I'ts usually not to hard but I've always rubbed her nose to get her to lick it, that way the pill goes down. I'd never heard about stroking the throat. If the throat doesn't work, try the nose.

Pills are hard but I actually had to give her an inhaler treatment twice a day for a few months. Now THAT'S hard. rolling_smile.gif

amynicole21 replied:
YES! My sister has to give her 18 lb cat a steroid inhaler treatment for his asthma every day!! blink.gif She spends something like $60/month on the meds. ohmy.gif

kit_kats_mom replied:
Yeah, and the pediatric inhailor was not only very hard to find but expensive.

If your sister would like it, email me and I'll sell it to her for realllly cheap, shipping only. It is for infants so it fits over the cats mouth and nose.

amynicole21 replied:
Thanks for the offer, but I think she already has one unsure.gif I know she has to puff the meds into a cone shaped thing and then place it over his mouth and nose... I'm guessing that it is a pediatric inhaler... I really appreciate it though! biggrin.gif

kimberley replied: aww Amy, sorry to hear about your cat sad.gif hopefully the meds will keep her from peeing everywhere. good luck with it all.

and LOL Julie. too funny! rolling_smile.gif

amynicole21 replied: Thanks for the well wishes, everyone. The meds didn't go over so well rolleyes.gif Needless to say, I'm bleeding and in a foul mood and the cat is hiding somewhere in the house... couldn't say exactly where mad.gif We're going to have to go a different route with this. I called the vet and they told me to take the meds to a pharmacy and have them compound them into a liquid and add turkey or fish flavoring. If that doesn't work, don't know what I'll do. Aaaaargh sad.gif

CantWait replied: Ack ohmy.gif I know the feeling. Dusty's ear infection came back again!!!!!!!!!! More money there I'm sure. I'm so sorry that you have to shell out so much for her. I'm glad it's nothing too serious though wub.gif

CantWait replied: I forgot to mention, I give dusty his meds with his dry food, just kinda put it under a bit and he doesn't even notice it most of the time. Good Luck!!
