Update on Spencer - from Mark

Kirstenmumof3 wrote: Kirsten asked to update the board tonight on Spencer, with regards to the new treatment plan that the doctors at Sick Kids have come up with for him. First, they are still in Toronto (Spencer is an out-patient). They are going to remove his pic line (the one in his arm), and replace it with a new central line (in the chest); they use the line to draw blood and give medication. This hasn't been scheduled yet, but will be taking place next week. Spencer will start a new round of chemotherapy (two injections a day for 5 days on, 2 days off - over the course of the next month). The doctors at Sick Kids have requested that Spencer receive this treatment at home in Thunder Bay, but that decision will be made by his pediatrian here. We have an adult Cancer Centre, but our hospital is ill equiped to handle pediatric cancer patients. After a month, they (the doctors at Sick Kids) will re-evaluate the progress that the chemo is making and decide if he need more or not. Spencer will have to have another bone marrow transplant, but not for 3-6 months. This means that Christmas will be at home, and maybe even his birthday.
Kirsten hopes that they will be home for Thanksgiving (the Canadian one - Oct. 8th), and I really hope so. The uncertainty going into this trip to Toronto has been enormous, but at least we know what the plan is now.
