Update on Kylie's PED visit
coasterqueen wrote: Well, the ped sent us home with some kind of baggie contraption to catch a urine sample and he wants us to do it as soon as possible. Since I had to go back to work we'll have to try it tonight. But he said I have to bring in the sample as soon as she goes, so not sure how that's gonna work as far as if the lab is open tonight or not. Ugh, guess I need to call back.
He said it's hard to tell if it is a UTI or not because at this age there could not be any symptoms that are noticeable to the parent since toddlers can't tell you very much like if it burns to pee etc. So we'll get the sample to them hopefully tonight or tomorrow and hopefully they'll get us the results QUICKLY since we leave for vacation Thursday morning. They said they will call my mom if we are already gone and let her know plus whether she'll need to bring Kylie in or not. Now I feel even worse about going on vacation. Course Kylie doesn't act like anything's bothering her.
Also, it appears that she DOES have a dairy allergy. And that's what is causing her severe gas and bottom rashes So since there is no way I can do a dairy elimination diet (I'm nursing) then we are going to try Lactaid milk instead of whole cow's milk. I saw a nutritionist who told me I'd basically starve to death if I did the dairy elim because I have severe food phobias and dairy is a HUGE part of my diet. So we have to limit her dairy intake (cheese, etc) and give her the Lactaid. Not sure if it's gonna help or not but we'll try. *SIGH*
So that's that. Don't know anything on the UTI for now.
Thanks for thinking of us.
amynicole21 replied: Ugh! Well, unfortunatly I have lots of experience with UTIs. Once they get the sample, it will still take them a few days to have the lab analyze it. I have no idea why Will they give her the pain pills like uristat? I think they are fairly harmless if they turn out to be unnecessary.
That sucks about the dairy allergy as well. Has she had problems her whole life? I'm sure that the lactaid will do the trick - did they say anything about soy milk?
Why is it that things like this ALWAYS happen before a major life event or trip?? Sophia gets an ear infection 2 days before ANY trip we have ever taken.
I hope that Kylie is feeling better soon, and that they can figure out whatever this crazy thing is. Good luck.
chloe&tysmommy replied: aww poor Kylie
I hope she feels better soon and I hope she can adjust to the lactaid well...poor little thing
Kirstenmumof3 replied: I'm sorry to hear about her Dairy allergy. Claudia had a dairy allergy and she outgrew it. Claudia was very gassy, poor thing and had such a red little bottom. I had to eliminate dairy from my diet and when I did this I found that I was also sensitive to dairy. I hope the Lactaid works.
I also have had to get many urine samples from infants and toddlers. It isn't that hard, did they give you that bag that you stick to her? Also what helped for us is to give them a warm bath before you try to get the sample. Good Luck!
ediep replied: ugh!! I am gald that Kylie is feel well, but the milk allergy thing sure does stink. I drink Lactaid milke and it tastes exactly the same to me. I even gave it to Jason when he was getting over the Rotavirus because the doc said that reg milk may aggreviate his stomach. He never noticed the switch. I'm sure Kylie won't notice. Good luck with the urine sample. Jason had a urine test done once when he was in the ER. Maybe it is different for boys, but they just put a tiny tube up his penis and got what they needed in one second....*ouch* Glad Kylie doesn't have to go through that!
Kaitlin'smom replied: awww, I hope she feels better soon.....I was not sure what was going on so I had to go find the other post, poor girl I hope what ever it is they are able to find it and take care of it fast!
what a bummer about the allergy....I could not handle that they would have to give me a pill or something.
momof2girls replied: Aww poor thing I hope she is all better soon! I hope its not a UTI no fun.
coasterqueen replied: No the PED didn't give her anything. Course I didn't ask either. We both don't think it's it, but we'll see. She's not saying it hurts all the time, so who knows. It could be some little phase or something really is bothering her. She has a tendency to say things like "I'm cold" when she's not, kwim .
He did mention soy milk, but Kylie has a minor soy allergy so we would like to stay clear of that as well. He said to try Lactaid then goats milk and then soy as last result.
I do think she's had the allergy since birth. I feel like an awful mom but I didn't realize she *may* have one til about 9 months or so. I always htought it was possible since I had one as a child, but she didn't have reactions like I did. I had almost life threatening reactions to cow's milk as a baby. I can tolerate it now though. Anyways, after doing consult with nutritionist and such I had a choice of going to formula or dealing with the allergy. Her only true symptoms is gassiness which Ryan is severly gassy all the time so we also thought it could be just her normal thing, kwim? Ryan doesn't have the ability to burp and it causes him lots of issues and we think Kylie has that same thing, so she may not have a terrible dairy allergy. It's all complicated, LOL. UGH! So we'll see how the lactaid goes.
Yeah the last two times we've tried to go somewhere without her she got the flu! Both times! LOL.
coasterqueen replied: They did give us the baggy thing you stick on her. I'm assuming it won't be difficult but it was the last time we tried such a thing, but that was at 2 months old, ROFL.
She's a spitfire so who knows if she'll allow that thing on her or not. I can't give her a bath because she always pees in the bathtub, so that won't work. ROFL.
coasterqueen replied: Yeah Kylie had a UTI at 2 months old, or what they thought was that, long HORRIBLE story, but they had to get it from her the same way at that time. It was a HORRIFYING experience that I refuse to ever relive. I just hope it's not a UTI this time.
A&A'smommy replied: I hope its nothing!! Poor kid!! (((((HUGS))))) for you because I know your worried keep us updated hun,and I hope you get to go on your trip!!!
MommyToAshley replied: Aweee, poor girl. Hopefully she doesn't have an UTI, but at least you will know for sure. I didn't realize that she had a rash too, so maybe it was the rash that was hurting her. Hopefully the lactaid will do the trick. Keep us posted on how she is doing!
Mom2Boyz replied: awww poor Kylie I hope it turns out to be nothing.
coasterqueen replied: She didn't have the rash when I posted. It was a couple of weeks ago she had it. Who knows what's going on but hopefully we'll find out soon.
kimberley replied: how did you make out with the urine test? i hope everything is fine.
coasterqueen replied: I called them today and waiting to hear results STILL.
amynicole21 replied: Is she still complaining, or do you still have her in panties?
coasterqueen replied: Nope not at all. It's weird because she hasn't complained since later that day. So maybe she was trying to tell me she doesn't want to wear diapers anymore? But if that was the case she'd still be complaining because she's still in a diaper.
